When asked about the future of the Near Westside, his answer was immediate: consistency. “I want stuff like
[Summer at Skiddy] not just every other summer, or every summer. I want something that gives kids something
to go to everyday, not just one week. It only takes a couple of days for a kid to get a negative vibe from someone
else,” Cannon said. By having a place for the youth to turn to such as Summer at Skiddy, he said it gives them an
opportunity to be outside in a positive and productive way.
While the impact on the staff is great, it is easy to see the impact they have on the children. Unable to answer
questions for long, both Digiovanni and Cannon were pulled back to an attentive child: Digiovanni to play soccer and
Cannon under the water tent to help a young girl do her hair.
The smiles at Skiddy are felt instantly when entering the park, and it is that everlasting youthfulness that will help
propel the Near Westside to the bright future it is already experiencing.
Summer at Skiddy runs Monday through Friday from 11 AM – 3:45 PM. No registration is required. The last day of
the program is August 18, 2016, marking the Seventh Annual Near Westside Multicultural Block Party from 1 PM – 5
PM.

THE LOVE OF FRESH, LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCE
With two young children, it is not often we go out to dinner so I make most of our
meals instead. Which, doing so is fine by me as I enjoy cooking. I like to use fresh
produce in most my meals, as opposed to buying frozen or processed foods.
This is actually my most favorite time of year in consideration of access to fresh,
locally grown produce. There is just something wonderful about the taste of fresh
produce. I enjoy going to the farmer’s market on Saturdays to pick up produce such
as peaches, tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and corn. I also love the feeling I get from
growing my own food. Right now I am harvesting lettuce in my garden and I can’t
wait until the tomatoes turn red, or maybe they will be orange!
Have you visited the 610 Gifford Street Community Garden yet? A bunch of us Near
Westside residents gather there every Saturday at 11:00 a.m. to work on the garden.
We weed and water to care for the current produce growing. We are also installing
two new garden beds that will be used to grow garlic, asparagus, rhubarb and
potatoes. At the time you read this, we will likely be harvesting some of the produce
from the garden. Last year we took our harvest and walked door to door down
Gifford Street to give it away.

With an opportunity for fresh locally grown produce, like peppers and apples, I want
to share with you two of my most raved about recipes, Pepper Salad and Apple
Bread. They are both really easy to throw together and people will love the taste so

Con dos niños pequeños, no es frecuente que salgamos a cenar así que hago la

Ingredients
FRESH PEPPER SALAD
I have never followed a recipe for this salad. I just gather the ingredients and combine.
2+ bell peppers, chopped – I like to use red, or red and orange, can
use green but I prefer red for their color and taste
1 can of black beans, rinsed – sometimes I use two cans because I
particularly like black beans. Goya is my favorite.
1 can of sweet corn, drained
1-2 avocados, cubed – cut in half, remove the pit, use a knife to slice
the insides in cubes then scoop out with a spoon
1 tsp. kosher salt – to enhance flavor but not overpower, maybe start
with 1 tsp.
Ingredients
APPLE BREAD
2+ bell peppers,

Mix all the ingredients together.
1 can of black
beans, rinsed
Divide equally between two greased loaf pans.
Top with sugar mix (1 tablespoon of melted butter and
½ cup of sugar).
1 can of sweet
corn, drained
Bake at 325 degrees for 60 minutes

1 tsp. kosher salt
1-2 fresh squeezed
lemon
2/3 cup of vegetable oil
1 ½ cups of brown sugar
2 ½ cups of flour
1 ½ cups of diced apples
1 teaspoon of baking soda

1 teaspoon of nutmeg
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 egg
1 cup of sour cream
1-2 fresh squeezed lemon – adds flavor and helps to prevent the avocado from turning brown
Start by stirring together the peppers, black beans and sweet corn.
Scoop the avocados on top, add salt and lemon, and then lightly stir.
Taste, maybe add more salt and lemon, taste. If you want a little spice,
add cayenne! Let chill for a few hours or eat it right away.

Orange, the color to show support against gun
violence, blanketed Skiddy Park on June 30th as
about 200 people filled the infield of a baseball
diamond. Gathering for a Celebration of Unity,
Near Westside residents, community members,
and local officials sought to look forward after
the Father’s Day shooting in the NWS. There was
dancing, singing, praising, praying, and preaching
fueled by sadness, frustration, confusion, anger,
and love.
As Monique Williams, a young person in the
community, said: “We are here today asking for
peace and a right to live in a safe community. We
are the citizens of Syracuse. We are the children
of Syracuse standing together today in greater
numbers than we have ever before. Our goal is to
reclaim our city.”
Her words were complemented by other youth from
the community stepping forward in prayer as they
called the neighborhood to act in love, drawing
inspiration from the love that God gives.
The neighbors spread amongst the crowd cheered
and applauded while songs and scripture filled the
warm summer air.
Mayor Miner joined the neighborhood as the
keynote speaker at the event. She spoke slightly
over ten minutes on the historical practices that led
to the economic and racial inequalities in the Near
Westside today.
While Mayor Miner’s speech gave us a stark
reminder of the systemic processes that shaped
Syracuse’s concentrated poverty, the Celebration
of Unity also highlighted the city’s greatest asset in
fighting the issue: its committed citizens.
Through
partnerships
with
community
organizations, the neighborhood has filled its dayto-day with positive events, such as the Celebration
of Unity. Yet, this community gathering is only one
piece to the large puzzle of what is in store for the
Near Westside.
This newsletter itself is lined top to bottom
with exciting programs and activities that the
neighborhood is enjoying. Check out the fun-filled
summer at Skiddy on the front page, the innovative
mini-golf course on page 3, and the new voting
registration events on page 7.

Alcalde Miner se unió al barrio como oradora
principal en el evento. Ella habló un poco más

Making Your Voice Heard: Voting
Voting is a U.S. citizen’s greatest right—and our greatest civic duty. Sadly, voter turnout rates are
low across the country. Far too few residents of the Near Westside neighborhood are voting as well.
Data from the Onondaga County Board of elections suggests that currently in the Near Westside
community, there are around 900 registered voters, but likely more than 3,000 people who are eligible
to register.
Voting is a crucial part of a functioning democracy, as it allows people to pick for themselves the
leaders who represent them. However, more often than not, those who do vote are
not representative of lower and middle income people, or young people. According
to MassVOTE, a non-partisan voting rights not for profit organization, for the
past 30 years, those who turn out to vote have not been an accurate representation
of the general population of our country. Voters tend to be disproportionately
higher income, increasingly partisan and older than the general population. This
has led to cuts in funding social programs that assist low income people, less
opportunities for young people, and frustration across America for the intense
political partisanship that seems to keep important laws and policies from being
passed and implemented.
Getting out to cast your ballot in a low income community is extremely important
because elected officials pay close attention to who votes. When a neighborhood
has a low voter turnout, elected officials tend to disregard the wants and the
needs of that community, making more appearances and spending more time and

money addressing the concerns of areas who do vote, generally higher income
communities.
In order to vote in the city of Syracuse, you have to first register with the Onondaga County Board of
Elections. This summer there will be several chances for residents of the Near Westside to register
to vote right in their own backyard. During the month of August there will be recurring voter
registration drives outside of Nojaim’s Grocery Store starting the week of August 1st.
There will also be a voter registration booth at this year’s Near Westside Block Party on August 18th.
Residents of the Near Westside can visit the booth to register to vote, or to find out more information
about where their polling place is. Upon registering to vote or inquiring about a polling place,
residents will be entered in a drawing to win a gift certificate to a local business.
Your vote is your voice. Registering to vote is the first step towards making your voice—and the voice
of your community—heard by elected officials. We hope to see you at one of our voter registration
drives this summer!

Cuse Art Cart

Some of you may have seen our Artist
in Residence Justin Mastrangelo around the
neighborhood, however, you can expect to see
him a bit more now that he’s ready to unveil the
Cuse Art Cart. Justin custom built a mobile art
station to trail behind him on none other than
a bright orange moped. This project has been
in the works for quite some time now and we’re
thrilled for him to finally take it to the streets.
Justin, who is a professor at SUNY Oswego
and has a background in printmaking, had
never built anything like this before so he did
a lot of research into the actual construction
as well as towing capacity and vehicle permits.
Though this type of project is very different
from what he normally takes on, it has been
well worth the effort and eagerly anticipated
by everyone at SALTQuarters. The whole
purpose is to help bring art to as many people
in the neighborhood as possible and to work
with local organizations who value this type
of outreach. The Art Cart is set up for various
printmaking projects such as t-shirt design and
button making. The cart folds up into a smaller,
more compact design for easy towing when on
the move, but when parked, it can fold out to
create a tabletop surface for working and allow
access to storage drawers for supplies.
In addition to the Art Cart, Justin also
held a youth Peace workshop in the gallery
in July to teach printmaking to local kids.
Here, the students had a chance to learn about
the printmaking process, create their own
designs, and print them
on t-shirts and buttons, a
very wearable form of art
they can proudly show off.
Local artists volunteered
their time and skills to
assist Justin, allowing
this project to connect to
even more people. The Art
Cart and Peace workshop
came at a pivotal point
this summer when the
neighborhood needed to
come
together.

community

look forward to
making this a long
term, sustainable
project that can be
enjoyed residents
across Syracuse.

también llevó a cabo un taller de paz para
jóvenes en la galería en julio para enseñar a

los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad

crear sus propios diseños, e imprimirlas
en camisetas y botones, una forma de arte
muy accesible que se pueden mostrar con
orgullo. Los artistas locales ofrecieron
voluntariamente su tiempo y habilidades
para ayudar a Justin, permitiendo que este
proyecto pueda conectar a más personas. El
carrito de arte y el taller de la paz llegaron
en un punto crucial este verano cuando el
barrio necesitaba sentirse unido y juntos.
