THE NEAR WESTSIDE INSIDER MONTHLY NEWSLETTER • APRIL 2016 • VOL.7 NO.3 Trinity Health spending $1.5M to improve health in Near Westside By James T. Mulder SYRACUSE.COM This article was originally published on Syracuse.com with the headline ‘Trinity Health spending $1.5M to improve health in poor Syracuse neighborhoods’ SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The new parent company of St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center is providing a grant of $1.5 million over the next three years to improve health in some of Syracuse’s poorest neighborhoods. The grant from Trinity Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems which acquired St. Joe’s last year, will support a wide range of programs designed to increase breastfeeding, reduce smoking, get kids and their parents exercising and encourage corner stores to offer more nutritious foods. “We truly believe health does not start within the walls of our hospitals or our exam rooms,” said Dr. Bechara Choucair, a Trinity Health senior vice president. “It starts where our residents play learn, live and pray. That’s what health is all about.” Trinity invited communities in 21 states where it has hospitals to apply for grants under its Transforming Communities Initiative. An application from the Syracuse Health Coalition, that includes St. Joe’s and many other community groups, was one of six applications nationwide selected by Trinity. Members of the Syracuse Health Coalition include the Onondaga County Health Department, Near Westside Initiative, Northside Urban Partnership, Lerner Center at Syracuse University and HealtheConnections. The grant will support many projects underway on Syracuse’s Near West Side to improve health in the poor neighborhood where there are high rates of diabetes, high blood pressure and other health problems. One of those projects by the Near Westside Initiative will transform a vacant lot on Wyoming Street into a park where adults can exercise and children can play. Another project involving St. Joe’s and Nojaim Brothers Supermarket on Gifford Street encourages residents to eat more nutritious food. “If we truly want to transform a community we have to reach across other sectors that go beyond health,” Choucair said. Add the chopped onion and cook until it turns translucent. Toss in the garlic, jalapeño, and fresh chorizo (or any other kind of fresh sausage), then sauté for about a minute. Add the tomatoes and beans, then simmer the sauce until it is thick and the sausage is cooked, about 5 minutes on medium heat. Taste and add salt and pepper as needed. Because this sauce contains meat, it won’t keep especially long in the fridge, but you can freeze it for later use if you don’t plan to eat it all within a few days.
