FREE - The ART OF MARRIAGE
WEEKEND RETREAT FOR COUPLES
Friday Nov. 9, 2012 7:00 - 10:00 p.m. &
Saturday Nov. 10th 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
St. Mary’s Church, 1600 East Ave. Palmdale CA
Whether your marriage is currently braving a storm, having lackluster relationship episodes, or if you both simply want to enrich your relationship further,
it is worth to invest a weekend for this event.
With professional Facilitators, this retreat is guided by videos and manuals
where couples will explore ways to enrich their marriages by understanding
God’s design for our relationships. These materials combine dramatic stories,
real-life testimonies, expert interviews, humorous vignettes and other teaching
methods to lay out God’s design for marriage in a fresh, engaging way. Participants are however required to order a Couple’s Manual ($34.99) online at
www.familylife.com. This manual will have projects to help couples apply the
principles taught in each session, augmented by dozens of articles and additional content to help them live deeper in God’s grace. The Retreat will be
facilitated by our two local volunteers (Josephina Olarita-Dhungana and
Joanna Pavo), both licensed marriage and family therapists, and mental
health clinicians serving the Antelope Valley community. Limited to 15 couples
only, registration on first come first serve basis.. Both husband and wife are
required to attend. Registration forms available at the Parish office. Additional
minimal cost of $5 per
person for lunch pizza

refreshments. For further

THE MEANING OF DISCIPLESHIP
EL SIGNIFICADO DE SER DISCÍPULOS
The geography of today’s Gospel is significant. Jesus is
completing his ministry in Galilee and beginning his journey to
Jerusalem, where he will meet both death and resurrection. The
prediction of his death placed here is the second of three in
Mark’s Gospel, and as usual it is the occasion for an important
teaching on the part of Jesus. Today that lesson is tied to the need
for his disciples to embrace a ministry of service. A play on
words in Aramaic would have linked the words “child” and
“servant,” thus turning Jesus’ gesture of placing a child in their
midst into an illustration of his understanding of himself as the
Servant of the Lord. It is that same awareness of the meaning of
their ministry that Jesus (and Mark) wishes to instill in the disciples. Theirs must be a ministry of service if they are to follow in
the footsteps of Jesus. And that service
might even require of them that they be
“handed over” to death. What would have
been—in the culture of Jesus’ day—an
ordinary discussion of social status (“who
is the greatest”) becomes in Mark’s context a key insight into the meaning of discipleship for the disciples and for us.

Respect Life Corner As Catholics, we should support traditional marriage, be pro-life, and take offense if anyone forces Catholic organizations to go against their Catholic teaching.
1. As Catholics we should know that God gives us the tools to regulate birth in natural family planning. Of course, women are free to purchase their
own contraception. Standing for religious freedom, does not change this. The Church teaching still stands, as it is best for women and for families, but
all people, Catholic and non-Catholics must discern these truths on their own and must freely choose. The Church prays we choose NFP, but it does
not force.
2. A recent study of the Heritage Foundation shows “a child’s probability of living in poverty is reduced by 82 percent when his parents are married to
each other.” Supporting strong families supports children. The evidence clearly indicates that when there is a breakdown in the family children suffer
the most.
3. Life begins at conception. We all must uphold that teaching. When we don't we support what Blessed John Paul II called the "culture of death."
As Ethics and Public Policy Center Fellow Stephen White argues in a recent column: “there are some things that are always wrong.” And “among such
evils is the intentional taking of an innocent human life.” To be sure, White adds, “many other issues require prudent judgment.” But “all Catholics are
expected to work to make the civil law reflect…what the Church teaches [about abortion].”

How is compliance verified regarding child abuse awareness and prevention training programs?
It is important to do background checks and fingerprinting of all those who work with children in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
These background checks and fingerprinting are used in conjunction with abuse awareness and prevention training programs.
Abuse awareness and prevention training programs help ensure that we create the safest possible parish and school environments
for our children. VPIN (Volunteer and Personnel Information Network) is an Archdiocesan background information tracking system. This information system tracks employees and volunteers regarding their assignment histories, compliance for fingerprinting,
background checks, and mandatory VIRTUS sexual abuse prevention training. VPIN allows parishes and schools to adapt features
of the system to fit their local needs and it assists the archdiocese to complete its audit reports.
Did You Know?
Learn to “stop” inappropriate activity before it happens
Child safety tip: Teach your child to respect the word “stop!”
Teach your preschooler that “stop” means “stop,” and that your
child has the right to stop people from touching his or her body.
Obviously, exceptions will have to be made for doctors and parents, but even parents must listen when a child doesn’t want to be
tickled or hugged anymore. Reinforcing this excellent lesson
gives your child the power to recognize--and to stop— “bad
touching” by others if it should happen.
For particular help you may call Asistance Ministry
(213) 637-7650
¿Sabe Usted?

Natural Family Planning (NFP)
Natural Family Planning refers to natural, healthy, and morally acceptable methods
of family planning recommended by the Catholic Church to help couples achieve or
postpone pregnancy. These methods use daily observations of signs and symptoms
that reflect the hormonal changes within a woman’s menstrual cycle. Couples can
learn how to interpret these in order to recognize the natural fertile and infertile
phases of the cycle in order to achieve or avoid a pregnancy. This knowledge can
be applied to regular or irregular cycles. Natural Family Planning can be used
during a woman's entire fertile years, even during periods of breastfeeding and premenopause. There are monthly instructions at St. Mary’s parish at 10:00AM on
on the 4th Saturday of the month in Our Lady of Guadalupe room. The
instruction is FREE please preregistration is required call
Instructor: Natalie Kigerl RN, PHN 661/674-8827.
