THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT
EL PODER DEL ESPÍRITU
Do you recognize the sacrament that is celebrated in
today’s first reading from the Acts of the Apostles?
When Peter and John imposed hands on those who
had been bap zed, they received the Holy Spirit in the
sacrament of confirma on. The reading from the First
Le er of Peter and the passage from John’s Gospel
both consider the results of our bap sm and confirma on. Peter reminds us it is likely that we will have
to suffer for what we believe. In today’s Gospel Jesus
speaks clearly about the Holy Spirit, referring to a
“Paraclete,” one who will stand with us to defend us.
Poignantly, Jesus promises his disciples, and all of us,
“I will not leave you orphans.” He has never le his
followers orphaned. We have always had the Holy
Spirit to guide us.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
In the tradi on of the Church, not necessarily in
your own life’s meline, confirma on is the midpoint of
Chris an ini a on, standing between font and table.
Full ini a on is completed when a confirmed person
shares in the Eucharist. Centuries ago, this first sharing
in the eucharis c assembly was marked by a first sharing
in the Prayer of the Faithful. This prayer raises up the
needs of the church and human community, the concerns of the faithful assembled, as they prepare to li up
the world to the Father’s love. So a person could not
par cipate in the prayer un l they were anointed with
the “Oil of Thanksgiving.” Next, the newly bap zed
presented their gi s at the altar, a sure sign of their
investment a new way of life. Un l the sixth century,
these people normally drank a mixture of milk and
honey as a kind of pre-Communion. They were hungry,
of course, since they were bap zed hungry a er long
fas ng, but this beau ful symbol of the promised land
revealed them as God’s chosen, heirs to the promise.
Although the “milk shake” disappeared centuries ago,
we s ll see the vigor of this new life whenever adults are
ini ated at Easter, and increasingly in confirma on
ceremonies that are a en ve to this meaning.

“Picture a locked door. Opening that door represent liberation from spiritual bondage. This door
has five locks, each requiring a key. As a believer
in Christ, you have all the keys you need to be
free” (Unbound, pg. 53)
Deliverance is removing the power of the lies so
that we can hear the voice of our Father that has
always been speaking deep within. Knowing the
Father through the Son is our place of deepest
freedom: it is where broken humanity is healed.

DID YOU KNOW?
A healthy scrutiny of programs for kids helps create a healthy environment
It is not a best practice for a parent, guardian, employer, or manager to blindly trust everyone who works with children. Yet, paranoia of those
who work with children is also not a best practice. There is a healthy balance. By regularly and frequently questioning the actions and motives
of those who work with children, parents and other adults can audit the programs their children participate in and help keep caregivers accountable for their work. In this process, parents and other adults can create a constant fear of being caught in the mind of a perpetrator. By
channeling this kind of healthy scrutiny and suspicion into accountability, adults can create an environment where children are protected, quality care is emulated, and abuse is not tolerated. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “An ounce of healthy suspicion is worth a pound of prevention,” email: [email protected].
An ounce of healthy suspicion is worth a pound of prevention), escriba a [email protected].
