Message from Our Pastor, Reverend Vaughn Winters
Dear Parish Family:
Hello - I would like to share that I am presently away on a pilgrimage to Jordan and the Holy Land, with two other priests and a group of 41
people. Some of the pilgrims are from St. Mary's, some from Fr. Joe's parish in La Canada, and others are friends and former parishioners from
around Southern California. I will be accompanied by Father Joseph Moniz, my good friend who is ordained this year 50 years, and my friend Fr
Roger Gustafson who will actually be an 8-day old priest when the trip departs! It is an interesting time to go there, with civil war raging in Syria
and Iraq experiencing new problems and divisions. It seems there is always something bad happening in this region that gave birth to our
faith, yet Israel and also Jordan tend to be islands of calm in the storm. I was able to visit Israel back in 1995 with a group of priests and bishops
and it will be interesting to see the changes. One change will definitely be the new high wall that separates Israelis from the Palestinian Christians and Arabs, built to impede terrorists but also a source of hardship for those who need to cross the wall for their jobs and livelihoods. Pope
Francis drew attention to the wall with an unexpected stop during his recent visit there. The wall cuts right through the heart of Bethlehem itself,
where I will have the opportunity to separate from the group for an overnight stay with a Palestinian Christian family. To be able to actually stay
in a family home rather than just hotels is a great way to really get a sense of the country and people.
After two days in Jordan visiting the ancient city of Petra, Mount Nebo from which Moses viewed the Promised Land, and the site of Jesus'
baptism by John the Baptist, we continue on to Israel. It is a powerful experience to be able to actually walk where Jesus walked and see what
he saw in places like Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, and the Old City of Jerusalem. Although many of these places have been changed by the
passing centuries one can still feel Christ's presence there, as the words of scripture come alive. Sadly, in our own era we are witnessing the
rapid dwindling of the centuries-old Christian community in the Holy Land, which is often caught in the middle of the conflict between Israelis and
Palestinian Arabs. We need to work for the preservation of these holy places, and for free access and political freedoms for all in Israel, so that
future generations can also make this spiritual journey. Thank you for your prayers for our safe travels in this pilgrimage and I will certainly carry
the intentions of our Parish Family with me.

What is RCIA?
The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is the Catholic Church’s way of extending an invitation to those who wish to know more about the
Catholic Church. The Rite of Initiation is a spiritual journey that takes place within a community of believers. Therefore, this rite is referred to as a
process rather than a class or program.
Who is RCIA for?
· Those who feel it is time to begin a journey toward baptism.
· Those baptized Christians who wish to explore entering into full communion in the Catholic faith.
· Those baptized Catholics who wish to complete their Sacraments of Initiation, Confirmation and Eucharist.
How do I Begin?
The first step is to simply attend an Inquiry Session. You do not need to call or register. These sessions are designed to answer your general questions. At your initial session, you will arrange to meet with the Director of Initiation. At this meeting the individual or family inquiring will be warmly
received, personal questions will be answered, and particular needs will be assessed. Each person’s journey is different, therefore, the path and
“time-line” for preparing for initiation varies with the individual needs of each person.
When are Inquiry Sessions?
Inquiry Sessions begin on Sunday August 10, 2014 from 8:30AM – 10:15AM. The location is The Holy Family Room (behind the Church adjacent
to the hall) There is no need to call or register. You are welcome any time!

Protecting God's Children Adult Awareness Session is a three-hour training
that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about child
abuse; how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe. The parent session also stresses monitoring of computers, cell phones and other technology that perpetrators use to gain access to children and young people.
