Saint Mary School Open House: Believe it or not this is the time of year to enroll for the

Pope Francis has called a “synod,” a special meeting of the world’s bishops, to discuss the pastoral challenges facing families today.
To help prepare for this Synod, which will be held in October 2014, the Vatican has sent a survey to every archdiocese and diocese in the
world.
Archbishop José H. Gomez and the Archdiocesan Family Life Office would like Catholics to assist in responding to the Vatican’s survey. To that
end, Archdiocese has developed an on-line survey and is inviting Catholics to take part.
All information provided will remain anonymous and confidential. The results of this survey will not be published and the findings will be provided only to the Synod of Bishops.

All boys and girls ages 9 and 14 are invited to participate in the local level of competition for the 2013 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held January 25th Saturday at 10:30 am at St. Mary’s School.
The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is sponsored annually, with winners progressing through local, district, and state competition. International champions are announced by the K of C international
headquarters based on scores from the state-level competitions. All
boys and girls ages 9 to 14 years old are eligible to participate and will
compete in their respective age divisions.
All contestants on the local level are recognized for their participation in

St. Mary’s is pleased to announce that Fr. Jack Stoeger, director of the
Cardinal Timothy Manning House of Prayer for Priests in Los Angeles,
will present a morning of spiritual reflection, “Taking Seriously What
Mass is All About” on Saturday, January 25th from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
in the Parish Hall.
Fr. Jack grew up in Redondo Beach. He was ordained in 1972 and
served in six very diverse parishes in the archdiocese from La Mirada to
Santa Barbara. He was involved in the spiritual and human formation of
seminarians at St. John's for 18 years and was appointed director of the
Cardinal Manning House of Prayer for Priests in 2005.
Fr. Jack has four years of graduate studies in spirituality through the
Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, with an emphasis on Ignatius
Spirituality (St. Ignatius of Loyola) and Carmelite Spirituality (St. Theresa
of Avila and St. John of the Cross). He gives retreats and days of recollection to priests, religious and laity. But, above all else, he is a fellow
disciple!
This will be a wonderful opportunity for true spiritual growth and renewal
of faith, love and Christian commitment. All ministry members and leaders are strongly encouraged to attend. School parents and parishioners
are also invited and encouraged to attend. The cost is $5.00 and includes morning hospitality and lunch.

Father Vaughn will be leading a pilgrimage to the Holy Land and Jordan for two weeks of June 15 — 26th 2014 a
12-day trip to be- cost is approx. $4000 and includes 2 daily meals, hotels, and airfare. We will explore all the principal

TONY MELENDEZ IN CONCERT
Is Back in St. Mary’s!!!
In February “A Gift of Love Concert”
It was an unforgettable moment when, on September 15, 1987, Tony played the
guitar with his feet and sung for Pope John Paul II in Los Angeles. Born without
arms, he performed a touching song entitled Never Be The Same. When the Pope
approached him from the stage to kiss him in appreciation, it seemed to reflect the
sentiments of the entire country.
His life was changed forever when he performed for Pope before a live audience of
6,000 people and a TV audience of millions.
"A highly talented composer and musician, Tony has recorded among others the
following songs: “Hands in Heaven”, “Lowly Servant”, “Everybody Sing” “Love is
an Answer”, “I wish I could Hold You” , and “”You are my God”.
Like wise it was an unforgettable moment when in May of 2008 Saint Mary’s
Church was transformed with Tony’s presence, all seats were taken and many lives
were inspired to a closer relationship with Christ due to such a wonderful spirituality
that Tony transmits in all his concerts.
We will be having the blessing to have Tony and his band Toe Jam once again performing live with their uplifting inspirational music on February 9, 2014 in a 90
minute Concert starting at 7:30 P.M.

En un Concierto de “Regalo de Amor en el Mes de Febrero
Fue un momento inolvidable cuando el 15 de Septiembre de 1987 Tony toco la guitarra con sus pies y canto para el Papa Juan Pablo
II en Los Angeles. Habiendo nacido sin brazos, el canto una canción muy especial llamada “Nunca más será lo Mismo” . Cuando
Juan Pablo II se bajó de la tarima para darle un beso de apreciación, reflejo el sentimiento de toda la comunidad. Su vida cambió
para siempre cuando se presentó ante el Papa con una audiencia de 6,000 personas presentes y frente a millones de televidentes.
La canción “Nunca más será lo mismo” fue muy apropiada, pues esos pocos momentos cambiaron la vida de Tony y trajo a la luz
del público sus inmensas habilidades como guitarrista atrayendo la atención del mundo.
Como un compositor y músico altamente talentoso, Tony ha grabado entre muchas las siguientes canciones: “Tu eres mi Dios”,
“Despedida”, “Manos en el Cielo”, “Siervo Solitario”, “Canten Todos”, “El Amor es la Respuesta” y “Desearía poder abrazarte”.
De la misma manera fue un momento inolvidable cuando el 5 de Mayo del 2008 la Iglesia Santa María fue transformada con la presencia de Tony, todos los asientos estaban llenos y muchas vidas fueron inspiradas a tener una relación más cercana con Cristo dado
a la maravillosa espiritualidad que Tony transmite en todos sus conciertos.

VIRTUS® Protecting God's Children™ Program
Protecting God's Children Adult Awareness Session is a three-hour training
that helps clergy, staff, volunteers and parents to understand the facts and myths about child
abuse; how perpetrators operate; and how caring adults can take five important steps to keep children safe. The parent session also stresses
monitoring of computers, cell phones and other technology that perpetrators use to gain access to children and young people.

What can I do as a parent following a trauma?
Establish a sense of safety and security. It is essential that children feel protected, safe and
secure in the aftermath of a trauma. Ensure that all basic needs are met, including love,
care, and physical closeness. Spend extra time to let children know that someone will nurture and protect them. Children will need a lot of comforting and reassurance. If you would

Vaughn would like to extend a very heart felt thank you to St
Mary's parishioners including Acton and Littlerock for all the food
and over 700 toys which were donated for our community's
needy families. Thanks to your generosity we were able to provide 125 food baskets and toys to approximately 285 families.
Because of our community's outpouring support we were also
able to include needy families from Lake Los Angeles and Littlerock. The net worth of food given away was approximately
$4,900. 00 dollars and the approximate value of the toys was
$14,000.00 dollars. A special thank you to St Mary's School
students and parents for sorting toys; SVDP St Mary's Confer-
ence members, in particular Maria Cervantes, Maria Prieto, and
Rosario Castellanos for doing all the shopping and sorting all
food donations, and Soldados de Cristo for helping bagging
toys, helping prepare food baskets and making deliver-
ies. Another special thank you to St. Mary's staff and our very
own Fr. Vaughn for his unconditional support! God bless you
for your generosity.
