The Way
of Faith
Aspects of Worship: Candlelight
Whenever Mass is celebrated, from the grandest
and most solemn occasion to the simplest retreat
setting, lighted candles will always be present on the
altar. With all the sources of light available in our
modern technological world, the humble candle still has pride of place in
worship. In fact, the General Instruction on the Roman Missal, which regulates everything having to do with the celebration of the Mass, requires
that candles be used (par. 117). Why such an emphasis on candles?
Candles, and candlelight, are a sign of Christ's presence in our midst.
The Easter Vigil itself, the most solemn celebration of the year, begins
with the preparation and lighting of the Paschal Candle, which then leads
the whole congregation into the darkened church, the Light of Christ
enlightening the world. Throughout the year, the Paschal Candle is used
at baptisms and funerals and on other occasions to remind us that Christ,
the Light of the World, is with us, and that his love and care cannot be
extinguished. From this understanding of the light of Christ flows our
use of candles throughout our worship: the candles given to the newly
baptized, the candles on the altar, the votive candles that we light as a
form of prayer.
As a candle burns, it consumes itself, transforming its substance into
light. In this way, the candle symbolizes Christ's own sacrifice: Jesus
gives himself entirely for us, sacrificing himself on the cross in order that
we may have life, allowing himself to be transformed into that light of
the world which cannot be overcome, and by which we are led out of the
darkness of sin and into a luminous life with God.
Today we celebrate the Feast of the Presentation, marking the day
when Mary and Joseph presented Jesus to the priest in the temple, following ancient Jewish law. When Simeon receives Jesus, he praises God
and says, "My eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in
the sight of all the peoples: a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and the
glory of your people Israel" (Luke 2:40). In this way Simeon identifies
Jesus as the Light of the World, and for many centuries the Feast of the
Presentation has been the traditional day when all the candles to be
used in worship for the coming year are blessed.
Our worship, and the whole of our lives, are illuminated by the love
of Christ, manifested in his constant forgiveness and embrace, his constant pouring out of himself in order that we might be made whole. The
simplicity of a burning candle is a constant, flickering reminder of that
love of Jesus which never fails, which draws us as a moth to the flame,
giving us life, freeing us from death. In the light of a candle we glimpse
him who is our light, guiding us to our heavenly Father. ~ Fr John David

Acts of Love at P.O.R.T.
St. Valentine loved God so much, he gave his life for him! We
can follow his example through selfless love of others. One
way to honor the life of St. Valentine is to reach out to our
neighbors at P.O.R.T. this February. Our community provides
hospitality and shelter to individuals and families. Bake a
batch of heart shaped cookies, make Valentine cards or
collect puzzle/game books. See the bulletin under Social
Ministry for dates and detail. “Let us love one another, for
love comes from God.” 1 John 4.7.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word is
celebrated at the 10am liturgy.
Children ages 4 YEARS TO 8 YEARS
are invited to gather in the Daily Mass
Chapel during the liturgy to listen to
and participate in the Liturgy of the
Word in a way that is relevant to their
young lives. They return to their family before the celebration
of the Eucharist. No registration is necessary, however we
do ask that only children between those ages attend.
Nursery
Our nursery is a CO-Op Nursery, currently at the 10:00am
Mass, staffed by parents who utilize the nursery and volunteer about one Sunday per month. It is a place for children
ages 1 year to 4 years old to come together to worship, learn
about God and grow in their faith development through bible stories, songs and activities. Please call Heather @ 3692632 or Christa @ 595-0385 ext. 119 for more information or
to register. As per Diocesan requirements, we are required
to have at least 2 caregivers present in the nursery
at all times. In addition, adult volunteers must
complete the 3 hour VIRTUS training
(go to virtusonline.org to register).

thankless jobs like changing sheets, stocking grocery
shelves, picking up other people’s garbage, or working in a
fast food restaurant. Thank someone for making your life
easier. Maybe it’s your spouse!
