Fidelity is the virtue that enables us to be faithful to our commitments and to our promises. Commitments and promises are different from duties and other obligations in the sense that these are an agreement between persons. Keeping promises and commitments is something that is outright challenged in our culture today. We can encourage this virtue in our children in small ways – ensuring they attend Mass weekly (fulfilling their baptismal promises), complete their homework, attend their sporting events to which they are committed, attend parties of invitations they accepted, etc. So often, an enticing offer emerges which makes us want to backslide on our commitments. Fidelity in small things supports fidelity in the bigger things. Because we are free to make commitments, we will be held responsible for fulfilling, and we will be rewarded for persevering in them.
