People of Faith Gathering Our next People of Faith Gathering will be on Sunday, February 5th, and our topic will be Catholic Prayers and Devotions. Plan to join us! Adult Faith Formation A Caution To Our Parishioners Due to the continued economic down turn, over the past few months OLMC has experienced several groups of people soliciting money (holding signs) in our parking lots after Masses. Throughout the city, many of these groups are organized teams of people who work together in an effort to manipulate others out of their cash. Once money has been retrieved from a certain location, the groups continue to return there. In an effort to keep our property a safe place for all parishioners and their families, please be advised not to open your wallet or pass over any cash while on Our Lady of Mt. Carmel property. Instead, place whatever amount you would like to give into the collection basket to be distributed through the Outreach Office. Outreach assists those in need financially by paying the utility companies and/or rental offices directly. OLMC’s Outreach Ministry is open to those living in the city of Newport News who are in need of financial or food support. We are on the 211 referral link for the city and we also receive referrals from Social Services and United Way First Call, daily. You are asked to refer the person(s) soliciting in our parking lots to call our Outreach Office at 599-3950 to schedule an appt. We are open Monday, Wednesday & Thursday, 12-2 pm and Tuesday & Friday, 9-11am. We have teams of volunteers available with open hearts to listen to the difficulties facing those who are in need while offering the loving hope of Christ to break into their difficulties. Nursery WOMEN’S RETREAT Sincere thanks to the speakers, musicians, planners and all those involved in this weekend’s women’s retreat. Your gifts of time and your willingness to help with this event was a blessing to all who participated! Do you have Veggie Tales dvds that your children have outgrown? The nursery would gladly accept your dvd donations (please no VHS tapes). Please drop them in the basket in the Commons or bring by the parish office. PEOPLE OF FAITH Our monthly People of Faith gatherings are for adults too! There is an adult segment during the breakout sessions and you are invited to come give it a try next weekend. Please join us after the 10 am Mass or after the 4 pm Mass on Sunday, February 5th. Our nursery is a Co-Op Nursery, currently at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, staffed by parents who utilize the nursery and volunteer about one Sunday per month. It is a place for children ages 1 year to 4 years old to come together to worship, learn about God and grow in their faith development through bible stories, songs and activities. As per Diocesan requirements, we are required to have at least 2 caregivers present in the nursery at all times. In addition the volunteers must complete the 3 hour VIRTUS training (go to virtusonline.org to register). Please call Heather @ 369-2632 or Christa @ 595-0385 x119 for more information or to register. Children’s Faith Formation CHILDREN’S LITURGY OF THE WORD is celebrated at the 10:00am and the 4:00pm liturgies. Children ages 4yrs to 8 yrs. are invited to gather in the Daily Mass Chapel during the liturgy to listen to and participate in the Liturgy of the Word in a way that is relevant to their young lives. They return to their family before the celebration of the Eucharist. No registration is necessary. RAISING FAITH-FILLED KIDS There are still a few copies of the book by Tom McGrath available in the parish store. If you weren’t able to attend the book discussions, why not pick up a copy to read at your leisure! VIRTUS VIRTUS TRAINING AT OLMC The Diocese mandates that all those that minister with children or youth must take this training prior to volunteering. All parents using the Cooperative Nursery at OLMC must also be trained. Upcoming VIRTUS TRAINING will be offered here at OLMC in the Commons Meeting Space on Saturday, February 25, at 9:00 a.m. Register for the 3 hour session online at Virtusonline.org. Our Lady of Mount Carmel School News UPCOMING EVENTS: January 29: Open House for prospective students for the 2012 - 2013 School Year, 12:30 - 2:00 January 29 - February 3: Catholic Schools’ Week Virtue of the Month for January: Fidelity Throughout the month of January we’ll be cultivating the virtue of fidelity. Fidelity is the virtue that enables us to be faithful to our commitments and to our promises. Commitments and promises are different from duties and other obligations in the sense that these are an agreement between persons. Keeping promises and commitments is something that is outright challenged in our culture today. We can encourage this virtue in our children in small ways – ensuring they attend Mass weekly (fulfilling their baptismal promises), complete their homework, attend their sporting events to which they are committed, attend parties of invitations they accepted, etc. So often, an enticing offer emerges which makes us want to backslide on our commitments. Fidelity in small things supports fidelity in the bigger things. Because we are free to make commitments, we will be held responsible for fulfilling, and we will be rewarded for persevering in them.
