Last year, after referring to Medjugorje, our Holy Father, Pope
Francis, cautioned against “basing one’s faith on apparitions or
anything other than Christ.” During a recent daily homily, he
asked the faithful to understand that “the Kingdom of God is
among us” and to stop seeking “strange things.” The Catechism
of the Catholic Church states: “Pastoral discernment is needed
to sustain and support popular piety, and, if necessary, to purify
and correct the religious sense which underlies these devotions
so that the faithful may advance in knowledge of the mystery of
Christ. Their exercise is subject to the care and judgment of the
bishops and to the general norms of the Church.” (CCC 1676)
In regards to the development of a popular devotion focused on
a statue of the Virgin Mary in a private residence in Fresno, there
has been misinformation circulating that I have officially stated
that this is a miraculous event. This is not correct. I have only
reached out to a member of the household by letter encouraging
the family to meet with one of our priests for pastoral guidance.
To date, the family has not responded. The letter sent to the
family may be viewed on our diocesan website at:

As Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fresno, I do not
endorse, encourage or authorize visitation to such a venue
or authorize donations to be received for whatever purpose.

NFP Awareness Week
What is natural family planning (NFP)?
Natural family planning is a general name for the methods of family
planning that are based on a woman’s menstrual cycle. A man is fer le
throughout his life, while a woman is fer le for only a few days each cycle
during the child-bearing years. Some believe that NFP involves using a
calendar to predict the fer le me. That is not what NFP is today. A woman
experiences clear, observable signs indica ng when she is fer le and when
she is infer le. Learning to observe and understand these signs is at the
heart of educa on in natural family planning. When a couple decides to
postpone pregnancy, NFP can be very effec ve. NFP can also be very
helpful for couples who desire to have a child because it iden fies the me
of ovula on. It is used by many fer lity specialists for this purpose. Thus a
couple can have marital rela ons at a me when they know that
concep on is most likely to take place.

Is it true, as some claim, that some methods of birth control can cause an
abortion?
Some methods of birth control
are aimed at preventing the
union of sperm and egg and
therefore act only as
contraceptives. These would
include barriers such as
condoms and diaphragms. By
contrast, hormonal methods
such as the Pill may work in
several ways. They can
suppress ovulation or alter
cervical mucus to prevent
fertilization, and thus act
contraceptively. But they may at
times have other effects, such
as changes to the lining of the
uterus. If the contraceptive
action fails and fertilization takes
place, these hormonal methods
may make it impossible for a
newly conceived life to implant
and survive. That would be a
very early abortion. Medical
opinions differ on whether or
how often this may occur.
Currently there is no way to
know precisely how these drugs
work at any given time in an
individual woman. Concern
about the risk of causing an
early abortion is stronger in the
case of pills taken after
intercourse to prevent
pregnancy (“emergency
contraception” or “morning-after
pills”). In some cases these pills
are taken when sperm and egg
have already joined to create a
new life, in which case the drug
could not have any effect except
to cause an early abortion.

La planificación familiar natural es un término general para los
métodos de planificación familiar que se basan en el ciclo
menstrual de la mujer. El hombre es fecundo durante toda su vida,
mientras que la mujer lo es solamente durante unos pocos días en
cada ciclo menstrual durante sus años de procreación. La mujer
ene señales claras y observables que indican cuándo está fér l y
cuándo está estéril. Aprender a observar y comprender esas
señales es la esencia de la educación para la planificación familiar
natural. Cuando una pareja decide postergar un embarazo, la PFN

Antes siquiera de ponerle nombre, yo ya creía que la caballerosidad era muy importante. Cuando era adolescente, estaba en la lista de las caracterís cas y cualidades que me
atraían de los chicos. Puede parecer una locura, pero “sí”, tenía realmente una lista y la repasaba punto por punto cada vez me llamaba la atención un chico nuevo. La lista
incluía de todo, desde “es católico” y “se relaciona con Dios” hasta “le gustan los niños” y “me hace reír”, pasando por “le cae bien a mis padres”. Hablando en serio, al principio de la lista escribía “es caballeroso”. Al haber estado tanto empo a la espera de la caballerosidad, una de las primeras cosas que me atrajo de mi futuro marido, Daniel, fue
que era casi el perfecto caballero (digo “casi” porque nadie es perfecto –pero de hecho creo que Daniel está bien cerca). Cuando estaba con Daniel, jamás tenía que abrir la
puerta del auto o ninguna otra puerta. Si él tenía las manos desocupadas, las mías quedaban inmediatamente libres de cualquier cosa que estuviera llevando (excepto de mi
bolsa, claro –¡él eso no lo llevaría!). A medida que pasaron los años, ninguna de esas costumbres caballerosas desapareció. Daniel no estaba intentando impresionarme para
conquistarme. Pura y llanamente, es un caballero. Ahora que estamos casados, hay una forma en la que él ha podido ser caballeroso conmigo de manera aún más significa va.
Durante nuestra experiencia con el método de planificación familiar natural, puedo decirles que me siento enormemente respetada y cuidada por mi marido. Él nunca trataría
mi cuerpo sano, funcionando perfectamente tal y como Dios lo diseñó, como si estuviera enfermo y necesitara ser “arreglado” solo para estar sexualmente disponible para él
en cualquier momento. Además, Daniel nunca me alentaría a que arriesgara mi salud. Los an concep vos hormonales enen muchos efectos secundarios peligrosos. De
hecho, algo está fallando cuando la gente toma diariamente una píldora o lleva un parche para impedir que un órgano reproductor sano funcione como le corresponde. Los
an concep vos no son el camino a seguir ¡y yo tengo un marido maravilloso y caballeroso que lo sabe! Todo esto se puede resumir en lo siguiente: un día en verano, Daniel
me dijo: “Me alegro muchísimo de que no u licemos an concep vos. Creo que eso me haría verte más como un objeto y tú no mereces eso”. Este es mi “caballero de brillante armadura”. ¡Me alegro tanto de haber puesto caballerosidad en mi lista!
