PASTOR’S COLUMN
Dear Friends in Christ,
As I look at the Christmas cards s ll hanging on the door of my office, I
cannot believe that it is now February! I promised myself that even though I did
not send out any Christmas cards this year, I would not be taking down my display un l I at least acknowledged those that sent a li le something within the
card that I received from them. Sending “thank you” notes has never been a
task that I excel in very well. Even saying thank you some mes brings back
memories of my childhood when dad was hanging over me wai ng for me to say
the magic phrase that would free me to open the gi or to get back to playing.
This weekend is one that I used to dread. Today however, I am sincerely thankful, apprecia ve, and truly full of hope that this weekend of speaking about the
Annual Pastoral Appeal will be one that I truly enjoy. Why? Because I have
some great news to share!!! The numbers of our history regarding our APA over
the past few years tell a story of tremendous support of our Church’s mission
and wonderful generosity from all of you who have made your pledge to the
appeal and worked hard to fulfill that pledge. Thank you all so very much for
your great support in this important effort. Words fail me in expressing my true
apprecia on. Sure there are people who have not yet made the commitment
but that simply means that we have room to grow. I thank God for that too.

This weekend we have the opportunity to hear a li le Old Time Fiddle
music from The Black Family from Canada following the 4pm Mass on Saturday.
Next weekend is the 13th Annual Golf Tournament to support our youth on Saturday February 11th. It also happens to be World Day of Prayer for the Sick.
Consequently we will be offering the Sacrament of the Sick (Anoin ng) at the
4pm Vigil Mass for anyone who is ready to receive that sacrament. See elsewhere in this bulle n for direc ves from the USCCB regarding this sacrament.
Next Saturday is also the day that Ma hew Kelly will be speaking at St. Mark
parish in New Tampa. As I understand it, this will be his only Florida engagement in 2012, so if you’re not already commi ed to the golf tournament, you
might want to enrich your faith by this worthwhile experience.
While this weekend is for prayer and educa on on the Annual Pastoral
Appeal, next weekend is the actual APA commitment weekend. The Finance
council has chosen next weekend to give a brief presenta on of the mid-year
financial report. As the second Sunday of the month next weekend we’ll have
our special focus upon the youth of our parish at both the 8:15am and the
10:30am liturgies. Being the weekend that falls closest to St. Valen ne’s Day,
there will be a special Mass at the Cathedral next Sunday at 3pm for those celebra ng wedding anniversaries, especially Silver & Golden jubilees with Bishop
Lynch presiding. If you are 65 or 70 years married, you might wish to call the
parish office first so that I can arrange for your transporta on.

the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious
nature of the illness is sufficient. The Sacrament may
be repeated if the sick person recovers a er the
anoin ng but becomes ill once again, or if, during the same illness, the person's condi on becomes more serious. A person should be anointed before
surgery when a dangerous illness is the reason for the interven on (cf. Rite
of Anoin ng, Introduc on, nos. 8-10).
Moreover, "old people may be anointed if they are in weak condi on even
though no dangerous illness is present. Sick children may be anointed if they
have sufficient use of reason to be comforted by this sacrament. . . . [The
faithful] should be encouraged to ask for the anoin ng, and, as soon as the
me for the anoin ng comes, to receive it with faith and devo on, not misusing the sacrament by pu ng it off" (Rite of Anoin ng, nos. 11, 12, 13).

DE PARTE DEL PARROCO
Queridos Amigos en Cristo;
Cuando miro las tarjetas de navidad colgadas en la puerta de mi oficina,
no puedo creer que ya estamos en febrero! Me prome que aunque este año no
he mandado ninguna tarjeta de navidad, no quitaré las que me enviaron a mi
hasta al menos dar a conocer a las personas que mandaron algo dentro de la tarjeta que si lo recibido. Enviar notas dando las gracias nunca ha sido una tarea en
la que he sobresalido. Aun hoy, cuando doy las gracias, viene a mi memoria la
cara de mi padre esperando por mí para decir la frase mágica que me dejaría
abrir el regalo o me dejaría seguir jugando. Este fin de semana era uno de los que
siempre temía. Hoy, sin embargo, estoy agradecido y lleno de esperanza de que
este fin de semana disfrutaré plenamente al hablar sobre la Apelación Pastoral
Anual con alegría. ¿Por qué? ¡Porqué tengo buenas no cias para compar r! Los
números que se refieren a nuestra historia del APA de los úl mos años nos indican el inmenso apoyo a la misión de nuestra Iglesia con la gran generosidad de
todos aquellos que cumplieron con su promesa a esta apelación. Les doy las gracias por su apoyo con este esfuerzo tan importante. No tengo palabras para expresar mi sincero aprecio. Claro que hay personas que no han hecho el compromiso, lo que significa que hay espacio para crecer. Doy gracias a Dios por ello,
también.
Tenemos una oportunidad este fin de semana de escuchar música de
violín por la familia Black del Canadá después de la Misa del sábado a las 4:00pm.
El próximo fin de semana es el 13º Campeonato Anual de Golf para apoyar a
nuestra juventud el sábado, 11 de febrero. También este día celebramos el Día
Mundial de la Oración por los Enfermos. Consecuentemente, ofreceremos el sacramento de la Unción de los Enfermos en la Misa de Vigilia de las 4:00pm para
los que quieran recibirlo. El próximo sábado es el día en que hablará Ma hew
Kelly en la parroquia de San Marcos en New Tampa. Según me han dado a entender esta será su única charla del 2012 en La Florida, así que si todavía no se ha
comprome do para el campeonato de golf, a lo mejor desea aumentar su fe con
una experiencia que valga la pena.
Este fin de semana es para la educación y oración de la apelación Anual
Pastoral, el próximo fin de semana será el del compromiso APA. El consejo Financiero ha elegido el próximo fin de semana para una presentación del informe financiero de mitad de año. Como todos los segundos domingos de cada mes haremos nuestro enfoque especial sobre la juventud de nuestra parroquia en la liturgia de las Misas de 8:15 am y 10:30am. Siendo el fin de semana más cercano al
día de San Valen n, tendremos una Misa especial en la Catedral, el domingo a las
3pm, para aquellos que celebren sus aniversarios de matrimonio de oro y plata
presidiendo el Obispo Lynch. Si ene entre 65 y 70 años de casado, puede que
quiera llamar a la oficina parroquial para que puedan proveerles con un medio de
transporte.
