FOCUS ON THE MISSION
“There are so many things to do.” “We have so little time.” How many
variations of these statements have you heard or even said yourself?
Actually neither statement is completely true. There are many things to
do in this life, but really few things that are vitally important. Working,
searching, conniving, and worrying our way to “gratify[ing] the desires of
the flesh,” as Paul relates in today’s second reading, are really nonproductive. So little time? When we take on the freedom that Christ offers
us, we have all the time we need in this world, and even more in the next.
Elisha, the prophet Elijah’s chosen servant, was slightly befuddled
about what he should do. When Elijah called, he returned to bid farewell to
his parents and provide food for his people. Only then did he follow.
Jesus demands something different, something more of his disciples.
He calls us to a single-minded determination to drop everything and follow
him. Now, not later.

UNIVERSAL PRAYER
Stewards of Our Neighbors: Addressing the Refugee Crisis
Pope Francis transformed the lives of a dozen Syrian refugees in
April when he plucked three families from a crowded camp on the
Greek island of Lesbos and took them back to Rome where they will
receive all the help the Holy See can provide. The Pope’s drama c
gesture was intended to give witness to Christ’s teaching, “I was a
stranger and you welcomed me” (Ma hew 25:35).
Today, we are witnessing the worst refugee crisis since the
a ermath of the Second World War. The United Na ons reports that
60 million people have been forced from their homes worldwide by
violence. Many are internally displaced in their own countries. Many
languish in refugee camps, hoping to be rese led in a welcoming
country. The war in Syria alone has spawned the largest humanitarian
crisis of our me. The tragedy is so overwhelming that we risk
becoming inured to the depth of it. Yet Syria, though its suffering is
horrendous, is but one of many disaster areas whose collec ve woes
have led some experienced observers to assert that 2016 is already the
worst year for humanitarian crises in living memory.
Many agencies trying to address this humanitarian crisis are Catholic
agencies. The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops
department of Migra on and Refugee Services (MRS) is the largest
refugee rese lement agency in the world, and is one of two agencies
authorized by the U.S. Department of State to rese le unaccompanied
refugee children.
As stewards of our neighbors in the human family, there are many
things we can do to help. Here are three to consider: Pray that God
extends mercy and compassion to all refugees displaced by violence
and persecu on. Contact your local Catholic Chari es agency to find
out if it has a rese lement program and, if so, ask how you can
par cipate in the effort to rese le refugees and help them build new
lives of hope. Make a gi to the MRS’ Parishes Organized to Welcome
Refugees (POWR) program, which gives parish and community
volunteers an opportunity to help sponsor newly-arriving refugees and
provide for their immediate needs.
By offering what help we can to refugees through our family of
faith, welcoming the stranger as Christ commanded, we not only share
the Good News, we deepen our own involvement in God’s ac ve
presence in our world today.

Campaña de Biberones
Gracias a todos los que acaban de regresar un biberón durante nuestra
Campaña de Biberón. Se llevaron a casa más de 700 botellas y hasta
ahora 194 han sido devueltos con una donación de $4,931.48. Esto
significa más de 500 botellas están en sus casas cogiendo polvo. Por
favor, devuelva su botella aunque no esté completamente llena porque
esto nos ahorra el gasto de comprar nuevos el próximo año. ¡Dios te
bendiga por tu generosidad!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
El último sábado de junio o el primero de julio en un
ayuntamiento de Valcidacos, España, se pone en escena el
Miserere escrito por Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer (1836-1870). Esta
obra relata como un músico llega de noche a la Abadía de Fetero
pidiendo posada. Los hermanos del monasterio lo invitaron a
pasar la noche. Allí él les contó su vida pecaminosa y su deseo
de encontrar un Miserere (Salmo 51) digno de expiar sus
pecados ante Dios. Le contaron del Miserere del Monte que
cantaban durante la noche los monjes difuntos de un Monasterio
que había sido destruido siglos atrás. El músico afanado por
encontrar su Miserere, corrió a la montaña donde escuchó aquel
lamentoso y bello canto. Al regresar a la Abadía intentó escribir
la música de aquel Miserere, pero lo único que logro fue volverse
loco.
Aquel pobre hombre murió sin reconocer que cada quien
debe entonar a su manera su propio y pobre Miserere mei
(piedad de mi). Dios no nos perdona por la belleza o la fuerza de
nuestra confesión, sino por su amor y su misericordia.
