The Apostles' mission
Jesus is the Father's Emissary. From the beginning of his ministry, he "called to him those whom he
desired; .... and he appointed twelve, whom also he named apostles, to be with him, and to be sent out to
preach."From then on, they would also be his "emissaries" (Greek apostoloi). In them, Christ continues his
own mission: "As the Father has sent me, even so I send you." The apostles' ministry is the continuation of his
mission; Jesus said to the Twelve: "he who receives you receives me."[CCC858]

GROWING IN OUR FAITH
Contemplative Sound Bytes
2013-06-23
Recently I attended an Institute on contemplative awareness at which James Finley was the keynote-speaker. He brings
some pedigree to the task. He has nearly forty years of experience as a therapist, is a much sought-after lecturer, has
written extensively and deeply on the subject of contemplation, and, as a young man, for several years, had Thomas
Merton as his spiritual director and mentor. He knows of what he speaks.
I would like to share some of his insights with you by way of a collage of sound bytes, each of which has a certain "stand
-alone" quality; but, when taken together, also shed some light on the nature of God, on the nature of contemplation, and
on our struggles with both faith and contemplation.
Here are some of Finley's perspectives:
• The mystics bear witness to the perfectly holy nature of human existence, to the fact that we are infinitely loved
and held in existence by love, and that there are times when we momentarily glimpse and taste that in our lives. A
mystic is a person who has been transformed by such an experience.
• Anxiety comes from our estrangement from the consciousness of God's love inside us.
• Why do we spend so many hours trapped outside the richness of our own lives, living like persons standing outside
our own houses looking in through the windows of our own homes? Or, worse still, why are we inside our own
houses but in a mental condition that has us believing we are living outside? What must we do to wake up before
we die?
• Our lives are habitually pressured and so this is the perennial task: How do we, in the midst of our pressured lives,
give ourselves over to the love that holds us? We cannot make a graced moment happen, but we can work at
putting ourselves into a position where we offer the least resistance to be overtaken by a graced moment.
• Contemplative awareness isn't hard to find - it's hard to not run away from.
• Contemplative awareness is seeing things as they are. It's resting in God. To be in contemplative awareness is to sit
like "an unlearned child", in a time of "non-thinking".
• By sitting still we can learn to be still. Contemplation depends upon fidelity: If you are faithful to your practice,
your practice will be faithful to you.
• There are some simple rules for the practice of contemplation: Sit still. Sit straight. Have your eyes closed or
lowered. Take slow deep natural breaths. Have your hands in a comfortable position. Then be present, open, and
awake: Do not cling to nor reject anything that comes to you in thought. As a thought arises, let it arise, if it
lingers, let it linger, if it passes away, let it pass away, but don't let the thought carry you away with it. Move
gently and slowly in prayer - don't violate your body's stillness.
• A recommended exercise: Go to your room just before sunset some night for no other reason than to be there with
God when the sun sets. Have absolutely no other agenda than to watch it grow dark. Sit for a full hour. Sit in the
unrelenting sovereignty of the day's end. Sit in radical obedience to the falling light. You'll know solitude.
• People who pray regularly generally do not pray well ... but they become persons who rely upon God to make their
prayer well. And those who pray regularly will, like everyone else, still experience sadness and death, but sadness
and death will no longer have a tyranny over them.
• There is a difference between spiritual "sweetness" and spiritual "consolation": "Sweetness" is feeling good while
in prayer; "consolation" is the sense of having your heart enlarged (and that can be painful).
• Quoting Gabriel Marcel: We know we love someone when we glimpse in that person something that is too
beautiful to die.

- When you reach the highest level of human maturity, you will have just one question: How can I be helpful
- Love is two people sitting in a room, talking to each other. Neither knows what to say, but they recognize each
other.
• Why do the Buddhists speak of "emptiness" in relationship to the concept of God? They do so to refer to God's
infinite simplicity, that is, God as God is before all the distinctions made about God. "Emptiness" is our standing
before God's ineffability, utterly overwhelmed by an over-fullness.
• How can we be helpful in the face of others' suffering when we feel so helpless to do anything about it? When
persons share their fragility and pain with someone who hears with a true listening, those others uncover inside
themselves the 'pearl of great price'.
And not least:
• The generosity of the Infinite is infinite. Among other things, this means that we must give ourselves over to a
generous orthodoxy.
• To be unknown by God is altogether too much privacy!
• With God, a little sincerity goes a long way!

Agosto es un mes muy caloroso, los niños ya están
cansados de estar en la piscina/alberca y todavía faltan
dos semanas para que comience la escuela. Ya se
acabaron todas las actividades de verano, excepto…El
Campamento de Música. El costo es $10 por familia.
Oportunidades para voluntarios
Tenemos oportunidades para niños de edad elementaría,
adolescentes y adultos!.
Las formas de inscripción para el campamento de

CRECIENDO EN NUESTRA FE
PROCESO DE DISCERNIMIENTO
TIEMPO
Lo primero y más esencial en la toma de decisiones es el tiempo. Mientras más importantes las decisiones, más tiempo es necesario.
HERRAMIENTAS: CABEZA Y CORAZÓN
CABEZA.
Reflexionamos sobre la situación, buscamos información; pesamos las ventajas y desventajas de las opciones disponibles; tratamos
de prever las consecuencias; algunas veces consultamos a personas en quienes confiamos sobre la situación presente; analizamos y
sintetizamos la información obtenida y objetivamente vemos la mejor forma de proceder.
CORAZÓN
Siempre hemos de consultar nuestro corazón para verificar si la solución posible nos atrae o no; en una palabra, nuestro corazón
tiene algo que decir en nuestras investigaciones; con frecuencia la última palabra en la toma de decisiones. Discernimos con el
corazón lo que descubrimos con la cabeza para así tomar una decisión que es nuestra y de la que podemos subjetivamente afirmar:
“ha de ser nuestra decisión—de nadie más”. Es también cierto que podemos sentir la soledad en la toma de decisiones personales e
importantes de nuestra vida. Nadie ni nada puede decidir por nosotros.
Un componente importante en la toma de decisiones es la libertad interior. No puedo permitir que otras personas, amigos o expertos,
influyan tanto en mi decisión que yo pierda mi libertad interior.
III. PIEDRA ANGULAR:
VALORES
La piedra angular del proceso de discernimiento son Los valores. De ordinario, al tomar decisiones, las pesamos en relación a
aquello que es importante para nosotros. En mi mente y mi corazón mantengo una meta durante todo el proceso que me prepara para
tomar y finalizar mi decisión. La meta es tomar mi decisión a la luz de uno o varios valores. Podríamos resumir todo así:
influenciados por nuestros valores, trabajamos con nuestra inteligencia y nuestra afectividad para determinar, a su debido tiempo,
nuestra decisión. Ésta es la descripción de la estructura típica de cualquier decisión humana hecha seriamente.
Esto es lo que llamamos discernimiento. Para la persona creyente, el discernimiento siempre implica Dios. Para nuestro propósito
aquí, hablar de discernimiento significa un proceso sistemático de obrar al mismo tiempo con nuestra cabeza y nuestro corazón de
acuerdo a los valores iluminados por la fe para cumplir la voluntad de Dios en nuestra vida. La fe no cambia la estructura que hemos
visto, ni niega los medios humanos para tomar una decisión de acuerdo a nuestra fe en Dios. Incluso la persona de fe ha de trabajar
dentro de las limitaciones en un tiempo concreto y con su inteligencia y afectividad cuando desea descubrir la voluntad de Dios en su
vida.
FE Y VALORES
¿Qué aporta la creencia religiosa al discernimiento?
Ofrece valores que no siempre son evidentes. Estos valores tienen el peso de nuestra conexión con la revelación de Dios en sí.
Negarlos es algo más que un error o falta. Es pecado porque afecta nuestra relación con Dios. Por lo tanto la fe no cambia la
estructura del discernimiento pero sí le da un significado adicional. Al ser parte del plan de Dios, los fieles cuyas acciones son
coherentes con su creencia se sienten impulsados a profundizar su relación con Dios. Tratan de conocer más y más el mensaje divino
y los valores del Reino. Esto se logra a través del estudio de la Sagrada Escritura, las tradiciones, teologías, costumbres, vida y
escritos de auténticos testigos y en la oración.
FE E INTELIGENCIA
Es imposible concebir una contradicción entre el intelecto humano y la revelación de Dios, ya que es Dios mismo quien da ambos.
La fe rescata nuestro intelecto de muchas trampas: el orgullo de la razón, que reclama ser el señor de toda la verdad; al igual que las
mentiras de racionalización que reprimen los mensajes de los sentimientos. La fe denuncia la vanidad del dinero y del poder de por sí
y muestra cómo utilizarlos para el servicio de la persona pobre y necesitada. La fe purifica y enriquece lo que inmediatamente
aparece como atractivo y valioso para el intelecto. “No vivan ya como vive todo el mundo. Al contrario, cambien de manera de ser y
de pensar. Así podrán saber qué es lo que Dios quiere, es decir, todo lo que es bueno, agradable y perfecto” (Romanos 12:2)
FE Y AFECTIVIDAD
La fe hace lo mismo con la afectividad. Si Dios nos ha dado un corazón, no es para ponerlo a un lado. Hemos de aprender que el
amor no es romance, sino servicio. Es la dimensión adicional de la persona cristiana. Cuando amamos hacemos el amor presente en
el mundo a través de nuestra propia carne. La fe purifica nuestra afectividad. La persona cristiana tiene fe en el poder del amor
porque Dios es amor, Amor mismo. “La persona que no ama no conoce a Dios, porque Dios es Amor” (1 Juan 4:8). Sólo tenemos
que darle al Espíritu de Dios toda la libertad posible en nuestro corazón para lograr decisiones, grandes o pequeñas, que siempre
incluyan a Dios y lleven a la vida.
IV.CRITERIOS DE DISCERNIMIENTO
La Vida impregnada por el espíritu de Ágape (comunión como los primeros cristianos que se reunían para celebrar el amor
incondicional de Dios) es lo que estamos llamados a escoger en nuestras decisiones. “¿Acaso no saben que ustedes son un templo de
Dios y que el Espíritu de Dios vive en ustedes?” (1 Corintios 3:16). A partir de los Evangelios, los criterios de Jesús nos ayudan a
reconocer aquellas opciones con mayor posibilidad de vivir el Espíritu de amor. Los criterios de discernimiento son: aceptación de
uno mismo, y de las demás personas, la realidad y el aquí y ahora; disposición generosa con lo que soy y tengo hacia las demás
personas; apertura universal en todas las áreas de mi vida, a las corrientes de la sociedad y a las personas que me rodean;
reconciliación y armonía consigo mismo y con el mundo al que pertenece; estar en comunión con las personas en su encuentro y
compromiso en contra de toda discriminación y en respeto a las diferencias entre personas. En toda decisión hay que optar por la
vida a través de la opción que mejor integre estos cuatro criterios de discernimiento y ofrezca la mayor posibilidad de seguir y vivir
el Espíritu de Ágape.
