SACRED HEART CHURCH · WEST DES MOINES, IA · PAGE 2 HEALTH, HEALING & WHOLENESS - PARISH NURSING If I can be of assistance to you or a loved one on any faith and/or health concerns, please contact me. I have many resources to share with you. ~Nancy Carlson, RN [email protected] Love & Be Loved - With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it reminds us of how important it is to love and be loved. Here are a few one-liners to reflect upon :) A hug is a great gift. One size fits all and it can be given for any occasion. Love is strengthened by working through conflicts together. Harsh words break no bones, but they do break hearts. Love is the only thing that can be divided without being diminished. Love…and you shall be loved. Anger is a condition in which the tongue works faster than the mind. All people smile in the same language. Laughter is God’s sunshine. Take time to laugh for it’s the music of the soul. You are richer if you have laughed, loved, given, and forgiven. GRIEF GROUP: Winter Seasons of Hope Grief group beginning Monday, February 1st-March 7, 2016 from 1-3 pm in the Church Library. Where ever you are in your grief journey-a recent loved one’s death, or if it has been months, or over a year since your loss, please know this support group can help. It is a Christ-centered faith sharing group. Please contact Nancy Carlson to reserve a space (225-6414, ext.315). BLOOD PRESSURE SCREENING: pressure checked! We will be bringing ashes to our home bound parishioners and parishioners living in care centers in the greater Des Moines area. It is an annual opportunity to share the beginning of our Lenten journey with our parishioners who are unable to come to church. Please contact Nancy Carlson if you can help. RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS BECOMING CATHOLIC…WHAT IS THE ROLE OF THE PARISH COMMUNITY? The past two weeks we looked at the four stages of the RCIA and that the parish community is the primary facilitator for RCIA. What are specific steps that parishioners can take in the stages of RCIA? The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, paragraph 9, states that ―the entire community must help the candidates and catechumens throughout the process of initiation: during the period of the precatechumenate, the period of the catechumenate, the period of purification and enlightenment, and the period of postbaptismal catechesis or mystagogy. In particular: 1. During the period of evangelization and precatechumenate, the faithful should remember that for the Church and its members the supreme purpose of the apostolate is that Christ’s message is made known to the world by word and deed and that his grace is communicated. They should therefore show themselves ready to give the candidates evidence of the spirit of the Christian community and to welcome them into their homes, into personal conversation, and into community gatherings. 2. At the celebrations belonging to the period of the catechumenate, the faithful should seek to be present whenever possible and should take an active part in the responses, prayers, singing, and acclamations. 3. On the day of election, because it is a day of growth for the community, the faithful, when called upon, should be sure to give honest and carefully considered testimony about the catechumens. 4. During Lent, the period of purification and enlightenment, the faithful should take care to participate in the rites of the scrutinies and presentations and give the elect the example of their own renewal in the spirit of penance, faith, and charity. At the Easter Vigil, they should attach great importance to renewing their own baptismal promises. 5. During the period immediately after baptism, the faithful should take part in the Masses for neophytes, that is, the Sunday Masses of the Easter season, welcome the neophytes with open arms in charity, and help them to feel more at home in the community of the baptized.‖ Are you interested in learning more about becoming Catholic or how you can participate as a Sacred Heart parishioner? We start serving at 8:30 and go until 11:00. Our breakfast coincides with ―Scout Sunday.‖ The Boy Scouts will be helping serve breakfast and will be the beneficiary of your free will offering.
