FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
Happy Spring everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the new life and change of seasons that we are experiencing
during these early days of spring. The change of seasons reminds us of the constant change and cycle of life
within our own personal and family life. Change also happens within the life of our parish community. Some of you
may have noticed the Pastoral Care Position we are posting for Sacred Heart. Yes, Nancy Carlson is planning to
retire from the Parish Nurse position once we have her replacement hired. Nancy helped start this ministry
seventeen years ago and she has built the program into an important part of our parish community. For this key
role we are seeking someone with a degree in nursing, social work or pastoral studies, who has experience in
pastoral care advocating, making referrals to community resources, coordinating volunteers, and serving families
in need in our parish community. Please contact me if you have any questions or know of possible candidates. I
want to take this opportunity to thank Nancy for her very good work in this very important ministry here at Sacred Heart. She
has helped us to be what Pope Francis calls to be, a Church of Mercy.
Peace, Fr. Chris Hartshorn

REFLECTIONS FOR THE WEEK


The world is full of examples of people who don’t love
others. What are the results of hate that you see in the
world? How would the world be different if we followed
Jesus’ commandment?
Jesus’ commandment to love another is a challenge. What
will you do this week to deepen the love you have for those
around you in life?

SUMMER SMASH: Programming for the current school year is
winding down, but Student Ministry at Sacred Heart will still be
active throughout the summer. A group of 19 youth and chaperones
will be traveling to the Diocese of Brownsville in south Texas in June
to help with home repair and neighborhood revitalization in the
poorest diocese in the U.S. In July, a group of teens will be joining
thousands of other young Catholics at the Steubenville Summer
Conference in Springfield, MO to celebrate and go deeper into their
faith.
Finally, there will be various local service opportunities offered
throughout the summer. We are excited to partner with Courage
League Sports once again to provide buddies to the special needs
children that participate in their summer camps. Watch your email
and the bulletin for dates and registration information on these
events.

RCIA—RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
BECOMING CATHOLIC…WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AN RCIA
SPONSOR? Our goal for our candidates who are interested in becoming
Catholic is threefold: to help our candidates become faithful disciples
of Jesus Christ; to help them understand the teachings of the Catholic
Church and what it means to be Catholic; and finally, to welcome them
and help them incorporate into the parish life of Sacred Heart. In
order to further this third goal, we would like to have our parishioners
who feel they have the gift of encouragement and listening and a
willingness to share their faith consider volunteering to be an RCIA
sponsor.
What does an RCIA sponsor do? A sponsor would commit to walking
this journey with their candidate, which could take less than a year, or it
could take up to two years, depending on the readiness of the candidate.
They would ideally meet with their candidate once or twice a month and
introduce them to other parishioners, invite them to attend Mass with
their family, and help them get to know our parish and its activities. You
would want to attend our Sunday night RCIA sessions periodically, but
wouldn’t be required to come to all of them. Basically, the sponsor is
someone who would be a companion of faith on the journey into the
Catholic Church. Someone may or may not be contacted to be a sponsor
right away, depending on the number of sponsors and candidates we
have.
Who can be an RCIA sponsor? An RCIA sponsor must be at least
sixteen years of age; must be fully initiated into the Catholic Church
(i.e., have been validly baptized, received eucharist and confirmation in
the Catholic Church); and must be living a life of faith (e.g., if married,
must be validly married according to the laws of the Catholic Church and
be a good spiritual role model by celebrating the sacraments regularly).
I’d like to learn more! What do I do next? If you are interested in
learning more about this important ministry, please contact Casey Conner
at [email protected] or 515-225-6414 ext. 309.

our faith but do we really worship that way? This study explores the
roots of the words and gestures we use in Mass and explains their
significance. We will also offer a childcare program during the study
for kids. Kids will learn about the Mass, the Rosary and the Saints
through video and activities while parents are taking a “Walk

heart, and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great
and first commandment. And second is like it, You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.”
There is a Rock the Block event in Valley Junction April 27th through
April 30th. This is a great opportunity for us to help our neighbors
and get out and enjoy some great spring weather and make some new
friends! Just sign up below and you can select the job you feel that
fits you best. Thursday is the day they need the most people if you
know of anyone that would be able to help out on that day! The link is
under the Rock the Block, Valley Junction Sacred Heart. If people
were only able to help out part of the day they could sign up under
general construction, there are half day shifts for that. They are
trying to get a pretty accurate number since they will be ordering food
for the full day shifts!

GIVING THROUGH WILLS:
How important is a will? Does it bless your family, and
Sacred Heart Catholic Church?
 SACRED HEART QUILTERS
One of your parish organizations is the Sacred Heart Quilters. We
have been meeting for over thirty years to do hand quilting around a
quilt frame. We do the finishing quilting for people who have a quilt
top, which needs to be finished with the batting and backing. It is
not important that you have never learned to hand quilt. We will
teach you. We meet in the parish meeting room on Wednesday
mornings following Mass and quilt until noon. We have a social time
around 10:00 a.m. with coffee/tea and treats. If you would like
more information please call: Deanna Wilson 987-4618 or just show
up!
 DONOR ADVISED FUNDS
How would you like to make a gift today that would enable you and
your loved ones to continue to make charitable gifts in the future?
When you make a gift to the Catholic Foundation of Southwest
Iowa of cash or other assets, we take your tax deductible
contribution and establish a special account in your name. Your
account is then invested to grow over time, permitting you to
recommend annual gifts to your favorite charities. Opening a Donor
Advised Fund (DAF) account is easy to do. For more information on
the benefits of establishing a DAF please contact Mark Reed
at [email protected] or phone 515-237-5044.

The effort to welcome back to the Church inactive Catholics is in full
swing. We have 22 billboards up in both urban and rural areas of the
diocese. We have about 3,000 TV and radio ads airing on both
traditional network and cable stations. We've "boosted" posts on the
diocesan Facebook page, where our messages have reached more than
40,000 newsfeeds.
Watch for this billboard welcoming Catholics home to the Church. It
will be posted at multiple sites in both rural and urban areas of our
diocese.
 CATHOLIC WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS
Catholic Widows and Widowers (CWW) is a group of adult Catholics
that have lost a spouse who are joined in faith, hope and social
togetherness. We meet the 4th Tuesday of each month at Sacred
Heart Catholic. We have luncheons, potlucks and dinners out. We
meet the 1st Friday of each month for Mass at different churches in
the surrounding area, with brunch following. We go to movies, and
take trips to various places of interest like the Civic Center. You are
free to join in any or all of the events. We car pool for those who are
unable to drive. If interested please call Marilyn Olsasky at 270-6121
or Leone Shepherd at 981-0105.
