From the Pastor
"For this command that I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious and remote for
you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, 'Who will go up in the sky to get it for us
and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?' Nor is it across the sea, that you should say,
'Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?' No, it is
something very near to you, already in your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to
carry it out."
This quote comes from the first reading today from the book of Deuteronomy. In it
God, through Moses, tells the people to follow the law of the Lord if they would have long
life and prosperity. And the law of God isn’t complicated, let alone rocket science. Jesus
even simplifies the law even more by telling us that everything in the law of God is based
on love: love of God and love of neighbor.
Its simplicity is brilliant and liberating at the same time. You see, everything we do
has to be based on these two loves if we are to make good use of the life God has given us
and so merit the Kingdom of Heaven. So what does it mean, really, to love God and
neighbor? Quite simply, it means to do the right and good for them and by them. As with
love between humans, love for God means to honor and respect him in every way. Quite
simply, if we love God we keep his commandments, we are attentive at the Eucharistic
sacrifice (Mass), we keep ourselves free from sin which displeases him, and we seek to
honor him at all times. In terms of loving our neighbor this means that we do everything
in our power for their good. Ultimately, the highest good we can give our neighbor is to
help them achieve their greatest end and potential: Heaven! And so, to help our loved
ones get to Heaven is the greatest expression of love there is.
This expression of love for neighbor can be achieved even in the little things in life.
It is not just about preaching and teaching, though these are essential. Will doing the
dishes, washing the clothes, cooking or cleaning help them get to Heaven? It sure can! It
not only sets them a good example, it frees them up for time in prayer and other good
works among other things. Even by taking care of yourself and keeping yourself from sin
is an expression of love for others since who you are will dictate how you treat others.
So let these two great commands of God motivate everything you do. Love God by
thinking of him constantly, praying fervently, and glorifying him in your body and mind.
Love you neighbor by always doing right by them and providing for them out of your
means, spiritually and materially, the things they need to help them achieve faith’s goal,
salvation.

Psalm 23
The LORD is my shepherd; there is
nothing I lack. In green pastures he
makes me lie down; to still waters he
leads me; he restores my soul. He
guides me along right paths for the
sake of his name. Even though I walk
through the valley of the shadow of
death, I will fear no evil, for you are
with me; your rod and your staff
comfort me.
II
You set a table before me in front of
my enemies; You anoint my head with
oil; my cup overflows. Indeed, goodness and mercy will pursue me all the
days of my life; I will dwell in the
house of the LORD for endless days.

No sólo
