PRAYER OF THE WEEK
December 25, 2011, The Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)
At the Mass at Dawn
Grant, we pray, almighty God,
that, as we are bathed in the new radiance of your incarnate
Word,
the light of faith, which illumines our minds,
may also shine through in our deeds.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, for ever and ever.
Reflection question:
How can the light of my faith be seen in my daily actions?

Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord (Christmas)
Week of December 25, 2011
Reading I: Isaiah 62: 1-5
Vindication and salvation of Zion.
First Reading Background
This reading comes from the third section of the Book of Isaiah, written in
the turbulent years after Israel's return from exile in Babylon.
Isaiah addresses Zion, announcing the reversal of her fortune.
The prophet renews God's promise to restore Jerusalem to a place of
honor and prestige among the nations.
The familiar description of Israel as Yahweh's spouse is used to reassure
the people that God's love is faithful and unbroken.
Reading II: Acts 13:16-17, 22-25
God chose our ancestors.
Second Reading Background
Jews, not persuaded about Jesus, were presenting legal challenges to the
Christians.
By the time Saint Paul made this speech, the Jews in his audience had
1800 years of history.
Paul takes advantage of that knowledge and tries to show how that
history led up to the coming of Jesus, who fulfills that history.
With great tact he avails himself of the allusion to David to introduce the
mention of the Messiah, who was to be of the seed of David.

Genealogy of the Messiah.
Gospel Background
The promises of a Messiah made to David and Abraham were fulfilled in
Christ.
"You are to name him Jesus" is certain proof that the angel wished to
honor Joseph with the duty of a father.
Mary's child is therefore Jesus and Emmanuel, for he is "God with us,"
which is Emmanuel, and "God our Savior," which is the meaning of Jesus.

Lectura Primera: Isaías 62: 1-5
Vindicación y salvación de Sión.
Primera lectura
Esta lectura proviene de la tercera sección del Libro de Isaías, escrito en
los años turbulentos después del regreso de Israel del exilio en Babilonia.
Isaías se dirige a Sión y anuncia el cambio de su fortuna.
El profeta renueva la promesa de Dios de restaurar a Jerusalén como un
lugar de honor y prestigio entre las naciones.
La familiar descripción de Israel como la esposa de Yahvé se usa para
reasegurar al pueblo que el amor de Dios es fiel e inquebrantable.

THE GIFT OF GOD’S WORD
On this day of gifts and gift-giving, it seems
appropriate that we take a moment to reflect on the great gift of
God’s Word. Because it is creative, God’s Word always points
to its author, always calls us to respond. Because it is powerful,
God’s Word can link the sublime with the ridiculous, the
transcendent with the immanent, the divine with the human.
Because it is graceful, God’s Word establishes a relationship of
deep intimacy between us and God.
At the heart of God’s Word lies a tantalizing tension
between the mysterious and the mundane. In our liturgical
celebration, this unresolved tension both reveals the meaning of
life for us and calls us to respond, to act upon that meaning.
Once accepted and opened, the gift of God’s Word is a
gift that keeps on giving and keeps on calling us to give in
return. It dares us to be like the gift-giver and to become gifts
for others, not only at Christmas, but at every moment of life.

EL DON DE LA PALABRA DE DIOS
En este día de recibir y dar regalos, parece apropiado que
tomemos un momento para reflexionar sobre el gran don de la
Palabra de Dios. La Palabra de Dios es creativa y por eso siempre
apunta a su autor, siempre nos llama a responder. La Palabra de Dios
es poderosa y puede enlazar lo sublime con lo ridículo, lo
trascendente con lo inmanente, lo divino con lo humano. La Palabra
de Dios es llena de gracia, establece una relación de intimidad
profunda entre nosotros y Dios.
En el corazón de la Palabra de Dios yace una tensión
seductora entre lo misterioso y lo mundano. En nuestra celebración
litúrgica, esta tensión sin resolución revela el significado de la vida
para nosotros y también nos llama a responder para actuar según ese
significado.
Una vez que la aceptamos y la abrimos, el don de la Palabra
de Dios es un regalo que sigue dando y sigue llamándonos a dar a
cambio. Nos reta a ser como el dador de regalos y a convertirse en
regalos para los demás, no solo en Navidad, sino en cada momento de

CAUSE FOR CELEBRATION
Let’s do something rather daring. Imagine, if you
will, this day without carols, no child in the manger, no
Christmas trees, presents, or fine, big meal. How would
you celebrate? For the first three hundred years after
Jesus’ time Christian communities did little to mark the
occasion of Jesus’ birth, although commemoration of
Jesus’ death and resurrection were given great
prominence. It was relatively easy to ascribe a date to
Easter, because it happened at the time of the Jewish
Passover. However, the scriptures are silent about the
date of Jesus’ birth. After the Roman Empire stopped
persecuting Christians, the church was free to add
celebrations to its official calendar and finally
settled on December 25 for Christmas. No one
knows exactly why this date was chosen.
Christmas became a more elaborate festival
during the Middle Ages, but with the rise of
Protestantism in England and Germany, the
feast was suppressed. Puritans who came to
America did not celebrate Christmas, calling it
pagan and popish. Only in the nineteenth
century, especially after Charles Dickens published his
runaway best-seller A Christmas Carol, did people begin
to observe Christmas again, but often more as a family
festival than a religious event. In one of today’s readings,
Saint Paul tells us what is at the heart of this day: “When
the kindness and generous love of God our savior
appeared, not because of any righteous deeds we had
done but because of his mercy, he saved us through the
bath of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he
richly poured out on us through Jesus Christ our savior,
so we might be justified by his grace and become heirs in
hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:4–7). Now that is really
something to celebrate!

DIGNO DE CELEBRARSE
Hagamos algo bastante atrevido. Imaginémonos este
día sin villancicos, sin el Niño en el pesebre, sin árboles de
Navidad, sin regalos ni comida de Noche Buena. ¿Cómo
celebrarías tú? En los primeros trescientos años después de la
época de Jesús, las comunidades cristianas no hacían casi nada
para recordar el nacimiento de Jesús, aunque sí le daban
prominencia a la conmemoración de su muerte y resurrección.
Asignarle una fecha a la Pascua era relativamente fácil ya que
sucedió durante la Pascua judía. Sin embargo, las Escrituras
guardan silencio de la fecha del nacimiento de Jesús. Después
que el imperio romano dejó de perseguir a los cristianos la
Iglesia tuvo la libertad de celebrar las fiestas oficiales de su
calendario y finalmente decidió la fecha del 25 de diciembre
para celebrar la Navidad. Nadie puede precisar con

empezó a celebrar de nuevo la Navidad en los Estados Unidos;
sin embargo, era más un acontecimiento familiar que religioso.
En una de las lecturas de hoy san Pablo nos habla del punto
principal de este día: “Al manifestarse la bondad de Dios,
nuestro Salvador, y su amor a los hombres, él nos salvó, no
porque nosotros hubiéramos hecho algo digno de merecerlo,
sino por su misericordia. Lo hizo mediante el bautismo, que
nos regenera y nos renueva, por la acción del Espíritu Santo, a
quien Dios derramó abundantemente sobre nosotros, por
Cristo, nuestro Salvador. Así, justificados por su gracia, nos
convertiremos en herederos, cuando se realice la esperanza de
la vida eterna” (Tito 3:4–7). ¡Eso sí que es algo digno de
celebrarse!

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
An old joke asks, “What time is Midnight Mass?” The
answer is not really obvious, since Christmas is unique in
having several distinct celebrations. The readings and prayers
vary greatly from hour to hour. The Vigil Mass hinges on the
family heritage of Jesus and his origins. The concept of
“midnight” predates clock time, and really has to do with a
celebration in the hours of darkness. Years ago, it was not
possible to receive Communion without fasting for a full day,
so the late hour of this Mass made it possible for the people to
receive. The first Mass after sunrise, the Mass at Dawn, was
once known as “The Shepherds’ Mass,” and later Masses set
aside stories of Jesus’ birth to focus on the key to the day’s
celebration: John the Evangelist’s majestic theology of Christ’s
identity as the Word made flesh, dwelling among us. One feast,
four separate Masses. Only monasteries manage the whole
round. Parishioners typically take just one entry point into the
mystery. Yet there is much to savor and celebrate in the
coming of Christ into the world. Christmas is not a day, but a

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
Además de conmemorar la llegada del Niño Dios, la
Navidad en Latinoamérica es un acontecimiento hecho en
familia; una celebración de reconciliación. Todos anhelamos la
armonía en nuestras relaciones humanas, especialmente en los
días festivos y nada arruina una buena fiesta como los pleitos y
los rencores. Por eso durante la época navideña hagamos todo
lo posible por corregir errores cometidos durante el año con
amigos y parientes. Muchas veces estas faltas son imposibles
de arreglar, por lo cual Dios nos aconseja el perdón y la
reconciliación.
Una parábola latinoamericana narra que la
“poinsettia,” o flor de pascua, con sus bellas hojas verdes y
rojas nace del regalo que un pobre chiquillo le hizo al niño
Dios. Mientras otros le daban oro y joyas el muchachito no
tenía más que una hierbita. Este don agradó al Niño Dios quien
lo transformó en la flor de Navidad. El perdonar puede ser
amargo como una hierba, pero es el don que agrada más al
Niñito Jesús quien lo transforma en reconciliación. Al buscar la
reconciliación imitemos al Dios recién nacido, quien busca la
armonía con la humanidad.

The value of family traditions
Spending time together as a family and creating a sense of belonging
strengthens our families. That’s what family traditions are—the handing down
of a culture that binds us together. Consider enriching your own family with
three kinds of traditions:
Celebration Traditions: These are the activities built around special occasions
that call for a celebration, such as birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, or
holidays. Christmas and Easter, and the seasons that precede them, are
wonderful opportunities to practice traditions: lighting the Advent wreath,
trimming the Christmas tree, praying the Stations of the Cross, or lighting the
Easter candle.
Lifestyle Traditions: Special ways your family can come together, such as
pizza night on Fridays, monthly family meetings, or weekly breakfasts before
Mass on Sunday mornings.
Patterned Family Traditions: Everyday events that give your lives stability
and comfort—saying grace before meals, stories and prayers at bedtime, family
dinners, a kiss before starting the day.

7 Rules for Online Etiquette
Context is everything. If kids want to have silly online names that conform to
the convention of a particular online community and only their friends will see,
fine. But for more formal communication -- like email addresses, posting
comments, or anything to do with school -- have them choose a respectable
screen name (though not their real name) that they wouldn't be embarrassed to
utter out loud in front of, say, their grandmother.
Double-check before you hit "send." Could something you wrote be
misinterpreted? Is it so littered with slang that it requires a Ph.D. in Urban
Dictionary to be understood? Is it rude, mean, or sarcastic? Don't send it.
Take the high road (but don't boast about it). Chatting, texting, and status
updates are all "in-the-moment" communication. But if there's an escalating
sense of rudeness, sign off. No good will come of firing off a nasty comment.
You can always write out a response to get something off your chest ... without
sending it.
Grammar rules. Rumors of grammar's demise have been greatly exaggerated.
But again, context is key. An IM to a friend can dangle as many participles as
you want, but anything more formal -- for example, a public online comment or
a note to a teacher -- should represent your best self. This applies to capital
letters, too. By now, everyone knows that writing in all caps means that you're
shouting, but it bears repeating once your kid starts interacting online.
Keep a secret. In today's world, photos, texts, and videos can be posted,
copied, forwarded, downloaded, and Photo shopped in the blink of an eye. If
you think something might embarrass someone, get them in trouble,
compromise their privacy, or stir up drama of any kind, keep it to yourself -- and
maybe delete it for good measure.
Don't hide. For safety's sake, kids should use untraceable screen names, but
using anonymity to cloak your actions can poison the atmosphere -- and hurt
people. If your kids want to be contributing members of the online world,
encourage them to post productively.
Remember the Golden Rule. Don't say something online that you wouldn't
say to someone's face. And, according to Beyond Netiquette creator Marla
Rosner, author of Digital Manners and House Rules for Kids: A Parent Handbook,
you can actually take that a step further. If you do have something negative to
say, discussing it in person is a better way to resolve your issues.

♦ Parish Registration: In order that we may better serve you,
please register in the parish. This way you are known to us when
requesting the services of the church. Registration forms are
available in the literature rack in the vestibule on the parish web
site or at the pastoral office. Also, please notify the parish office of
changes of address, phone, or e-mail, or if you are moving out of
the area. Changes can be emailed to [email protected] or simply drop a note in the collection basket.
♦ Baptism: Baptisms for infants to six year olds are celebrated at
Sacred Heart Church. Preparation for baptism should begin at least
two months prior to the desired date. The child’s birth certificate
and registration fee is required when registering your child for
baptism. Parents & Godparents must attend a pre-baptism class
and you may sign up for the class at registration time. All Baptism
Classes are held in the hall at St. Benedict Church on Saturdays at
2:00pm (arrive early to check in) and we kindly ask that you leave
little ones with a caregiver. As a courtesy to those in attendance,
doors will be closed at when class begins and all late arrivals will
be rescheduled. A baptism date can be set after registration and

♦ Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish
as soon as they become engaged or at least nine months prior to
desired marriage date in order to fulfill necessary marriage
preparation requirements. Contact Natalie Velazquez (831) 6379212 to begin paperwork and to set up an appointment with
one of the priests.
♦ Anointing of the Sick: Often, you may be able to arrange an
anointing by speaking with a priest after a mass. Please call the
parish office if you need to receive the anointing of the sick at
home. In emergency situations when the office is closed, the
answering service will relay the information to one of the priests.
In case of hospitalization, let the hospital staff know that you would
like to have a Catholic priest see you and they will relay the
message to the parish office.
♦ Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please
contact Sr. Catherine Lockshire (831) 637-9212 ext. 127 and she
will arrange an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion to visit
you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff that you
are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy Communion and they
will relay the message to the parish office.
♦ Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the
parish office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
There is a $10.00 mass stipend to request a mass.
♦ Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the
Blessed Sacrament is celebrated at Sacred Heart Church every
Wednesday from 7:00am to 9:00pm and on Sundays from 1:00pm
to 3:00pm.
♦ Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, the
mortuary will generally assist you in making some of the funeral
arrangements as well as contact us to confirm date and time of
funeral. Please contact the parish office to speak to the priest
about particulars of the funeral service itself.
♦ House Blessings: please, contact the parish priest personally
or call the parish office to make an appointment.
♦ Car Blessings: The priest is usually available to bless your new
car after Masses (weekday and weekend).
♦ Registración parroquial: para servirles mejor, por favor,
