HOPE AND
FORGIVENESS
There were some
interesting conceptions of sin
prevalent in the time of the
Hebrew scriptures. There
was the belief that God
punished sin immediately.
Those who suffered disease
or misfortune were,
therefore, sinners getting
their due from the Almighty.
Today’s first reading hints
at another kind of God. When David admits
his sin, Nathan declares, “The Lඈඋൽ on his
part has forgiven your sin” (2 Samuel
12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a
merciful God. What good news that must
have been to David and those who, like him,
could be honest enough to admit their
sinfulness!
Jesus is the good news of God’s mercy and
forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus,
perhaps the Good News would have been
too good to believe, too difficult to imagine.
But there he is in today’s Gospel, the Godman, forgiving a sinner and declaring that
she is forgiven because of her great love.
There is hope, then, for the rest of us
sinners, if only we love enough!

ESPERANZA Y PERDÓN
Había algunas concepciones
interesantes sobre el pecado que
prevalecían en la época de las
escrituras hebreas. Estaba la
creencia de que Dios castigaba
inmediatamente el pecado. Los
que sufrían alguna enfermedad o
desgracia eran, por lo tanto,
pecadores que recibían su
merecido del Todopoderoso.
La primera lectura de hoy nos
muestra a otro tipo de Dios.
Cuando David admite su pecado, Natán
declara: “El Señor te perdona tu pecado” (2
Samuel 12:13b). Aquí no hay un Dios
vengativo sino un Dios misericordioso. ¡Qué
buena nueva debe haber sido eso para David y
para los que, como él, eran lo suficientemente
honestos como para admitir su pecado!
Jesús es la Buena Nueva de la misericordia y
el perdón de Dios hecho carne. Sin Jesús,
quizás la buena nueva hubiera sido demasiado
buena como para creerla, demasiado difícil de
imaginar. Pero allí está en el Evangelio de hoy,
el Dios-hombre, perdonando a una pecadora y
declarando que está perdonada debido a su gran
amor.
¡Hay esperanza, entonces, para el resto de
nosotros pecadores, si tan sólo amamos lo
suficiente!

documentación y el de su esposa?
- Aquí las tiene, caballero.
La mujer, como no entendía nada, le
pregunta.
- Mi amor, ¿que ha dicho?
- Me ha pedido los papeles.
El empleado de la aduana vuelve a
preguntar.
- ¿Tienen algo que declarar?
- No, absolutamente nada.
Nuevamente la esposa.
- ¿Que dice ahora, cariño?
- Que si llevamos algo que tengamos
que declarar.
Continúa el empleado con unas
preguntas.
- ¿De donde vienen ustedes, señor?
- Somos atlantes.
Nuevamente insiste la mujer.
- Cariño, ¿que ha dicho?
- Pregunta de donde venimos.
El empleado entonces comenta:
- ¡Atlante! Estuve unos días allí hace
tiempo. Magnifico país, aunque tuve
una experiencia un tanto negativa.
Conocí a una mujer que era
insoportable, no me dejaba en paz, no
paraba de hablar, era lo más pesado
que he conocido en mi vida, hablaba y
hablaba, como una cotorra. Es la peor
experiencia de mi vida.
- ¿Qué ha dicho, cielo?
