Pastor’s Letter
Some Good News at SHJM
October 11/12
Dear Parish Family,
Each year the St. Agnes Medal of service is given to a parishioner who
exemplifies the spirit of service and sacrifice toward their church. This
year I am proud to announce that Arthur (Artie) Muller will be receiving
this award on October 26 at St. Agnes Cathedral.
Artie’s record of service is long standing! He has worked on many
projects in our parish, mostly behind the scenes, and always helping our
pastors with the many concrete tasks of church administration. He is
currently the leader of our counters who each week count and deposit our
Sunday offering. In the “old days” when almost every parish relied on
Bingo for support, Artie was a key person. Most of all he is a faithful
parishioner who supports everything we do here at Sacred Hearts. He is
also a long time community member who grew up in Water Mill and
served for many years as postmaster in Water Mill. He and his wife,
Irene (Corwith), were married in our church by Fr. Killeen in 1945. Irene passed away in 1988. Our
special congratulations go also to his children, Sandy, Mosey, Ricky & Jeanne, grandchildren and great
grandchildren, who are all continuing his example of service in our community and church.
I am proud that he has been chosen as our parish recipient this year.
Our St. Francis blessing of the animals was a huge success this year. The rain held off (the ducks would
have been happy) and everyone took delight in the blessing of their special animal friends! Thanks to all
who came to this blessing!
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Rev. Michael A. Vetrano

Grief: Coping with reminders after a loss ::
A 6-week Bereavement Group
Grief doesn’t magically end at a certain point after a loved one’s death. Reminders
often bring back the pain of loss. Here’s help coping – and healing.
When a loved one dies, you might be faced with grief over your loss again and
again – sometimes even years later. Feelings of grief might return on the anniversary of your loved
one’s death, birthday or other special days throughout the year.
FAITH AND SPIRITUALITY
These feelings, sometimes called an anniversary reaction, aren’t necessarily a setback in the grieving
process. They’re a reflection that your loved one’s life was important to you.
To continue on the path toward healing, know what to expect – and how to cope with reminders of
loss, a 6 week Bereavement Group will be starting at the Basilica of Sacred Hearts with Deacon Carl
Sanfilippo. Anyone interested please call the parish office at 283-0097 Ext 0.
Altar Flowers
Main Altar Flowers for this week were given in loving memory of Mary Sartori,
Sylvia and Gerry Minickene by their family.
Bread, Wine and Candles
The Altar Bread, wine and candles were given in loving memory of Mary
“Queenie” Gilmartin by her family.
Secular Franciscans ::
We meet on the third Sunday of the month after the 11 AM Mass in the dining room of the Parish
Center. Would you like to know more about us? Please come to our meeting. Bring a bag lunch and
we will supply the coffee.

PARISH AND COMMUNITY EVENTS
Becoming a Catholic is not a class, but rather a process. We are all on a faith
journey throughout our lives… we recognize that every path is different!!
Dear Parish Family,
I am so grateful to all of you who have supported our In Nomine Domini
Renewal. The summer months have brought us to a little more than half our
goal and we now stand at $715,000.
Please join me in thanking the more than 200 people who have contributed
to our campaign as of this past weekend. It is now a time for all of us to
recognize that to really be a success we must have the participation, how
ever large or small, of every parish family.
It would be wonderful to complete our campaign by Thanksgiving time and
be able to begin work on all of our renewal projects.
Sincerely yours in Christ

MUSIC AT THE BASILICA
SHJM Welcomes Mary Black
Friday :: November 7th
For the last quarter-century, singer Mary
Black has been a dominant presence in Irish
music, both at home and abroad. She has
shared stages, T.V. shows and recording
studios with some of the most revered
performers of her time. She has also played a
frontline role in bringing Irish music, past
and present, to an increasingly appreciative
and ever-growing
global audience.
What a fine singer Ireland’s Mary Black is.
Unfussy, gimmick-free and capable of
switching from confessional intimacy to
assured declaration in the space of a phrase,
she always puts the song’s story first. The
effect can be breathtaking, catching out the listener with a vocal catch or a sungthrough line that will break your heart or make you laugh out loud, depending on the
lyric. - The Art of the Torch Singer
The San Francisco Chronicle has described her as "One of the best interpretative
singers around".
On Friday, November 7, The Basilica of Sacred Hearts will welcome Mary for a
memorable evening of music as she begins her Last Call Tour of the USA. Don’t
miss the opportunity.
Check out Mary on her website: www.mary-black.net

Reflections On the Gospel from Pax Christi
October 12, 2014
In Sunday’s Gospel, we hear how welcoming God is to all. Dare we be any less welcoming?
This weekend is Jubilee Weekend, a time to take a stand for a more inclusive global economy. More
than 1.2 billion people live in extreme poverty. Poor countries are paying five times as much in debt
as they are receiving in aid, draining resources away from vulnerable communities. Today, in West
Africa, the three countries most impacted by the Ebola epidemic are spending nearly $200 million
each year paying off debt. Guinea, where the epidemic began, spends more on debt than on public
health.

APOSTOLADO HISPANO
¡Responde
por favor! Texto: Philip J. Sandstrom, S.T.D. © 2002, OCP.
