FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Friends, Today marks a very important time here at our parish and across the Archdiocese of New York. This is the official kickoff of the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal. There are so many reasons why the Appeal is important, not only to those in need in the archdiocese, but also to us, in our parish community. Your support of the Appeal helps countless people, and sustains the fabric of our ministries throughout our parishes. If you have not already, you will be receiving a letter from Cardinal Dolan, along with materials that illustrate the deep importance of the Cardinal’s Appeal to our community. Part of being a steward means living with trust in God’s generosity and responsibly tending that which God has entrusted to us. Cardinal Dolan is asking you to participate by making a gift to this important annual initiative. Your Gift to the Appeal: Supports offices, ministries, and programs throughout the archdiocese that nurture and encourage our journey in faith; Helps educate our children in our Catholic schools and religious education programs; Provides for retired priests and religious by giving them the retirement care they deserve after decades of service; Helps to educate our future clergy and prepare them for a life of service; and Helps fund Catholic Charities, which provides loving care to millions of people in our archdiocese. The archdiocesan goal for the 2016 Appeal is $20 million. And our individual parish goal is $155,000. I ask that you prayerfully consider your gift. Only with your support is this campaign a success. We all have in our hearts the capacity to give as Jesus asked us to do. If you would like to make your gift today, please fill out a pledge card and either mail it to the Appeal office or submit it to the parish. You can also pledge online at www.cardinalsappeal.org . If you need time to think about your gift, make your pledge during Mass on Commitment Weekend in a few weeks. Thank you so much for your support of the Appeal and please pray for its success at our parish. Poetry Reading Monday, February 22nd | 7 - 9pm Parish Center Join us for an evening of poetry in February. Nina Carey Tassi lives and writes in New York City. She comes to poetry as her main profession after a varied career as a professor and administrator in higher education as well as a writer and editor in journalism. In her latest collection, Spirit Ascending, she takes us on a bold journey across time and space, encountering various spiritual seekers asking by what mystery they bridge that infinite gap between the human and divine. Biblical cadences ring out from the text as we are brought face to face with towering Old Testament characters. We feel the ascension of the poet’s spirit as she moves through time and around the globe to meet varied believers and cultures from Naomi of the Israelites through Quan Yin of China and on to Antarctica where Nature is greeted in all 3 its majesty. A Word from Servant of God, Father Isaac Hecker, CSP Founder of Paulists and 1st Pastor of our Parish We have the encouragement of a number of bishops, and also, we trust, the prayers, sympathy, and assistance of the faithful. We shall have to face obstacles, opposition from friends and foes; but if we are the right kind of men and have the virtues which such a position as ours demands, our trials will only strengthen us and make us the better Christians. [From a letter to a Friend, New York, 1858, The Paulist Vocation, p. 81] For more information about the sainthood cause of Fr. Isaac Hecker, go to www.paulist.org Please remember in prayer the following Paulist Fathers, the anniversary (day/year noted) of whose death is this week: Charles M. Casserly* (2/1/1931), James P. Towey* (2/1/1953), and Hugh Swift (2/2/1919). *Denotes served at Saint Paul’s Released on June 18, 2015, Pope Francis’ encyclical, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common House highlights several basic teachings. First, the destruction of God’s creation, and specifically climate change, is a moral issue. Second, there is an integral connection between our destruction of “Mother Earth” and the suffering of the poor, especially those in developing countries. Finally, immediate actions are required, by individuals, who must change their lives, and by the community of nations. Father James Martin, S.J. explores these teachings in a fourminute video: https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=a_lqFTYLc_4 or google “James Martin video Top 10 Things You Need to Know About Laudate Si.” Parish Staff Rev.
