nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 7, 2016 The Navigator El Navegante St. Brendan the Navigator Catholic Church Cumming, GA Go… Baptize… Teach… Vayan… Bauticen… Enseñen… Pope Francis’s Prayer Intentions for August Universal: Sports. That sports may be an opportunity for friendly encounters between peoples and may contribute to peace in the world. Evangelization: That Christians may live the Gospel, giving witness to faith, honesty, and love of neighbor. The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Second of 11 pictures acquired for St. Brendan’s parish Since Mary is closely associated with all the mysteries of Jesus’s life, it is not surprising that the Holy Spirit has led the Church to belief in Mary’s share in his glorification. So close was she to Jesus on earth, she must be with him body and soul in heaven. On November 1, 1950, Pius XII defined the Assumption of Mary to be a dogma of faith: “We pronounce, declare and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma that the immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul to heavenly glory.” The pope proclaimed this dogma only after a broad consultation of bishops, theologians and laity. There were few dissenting voices. What the pope solemnly declared was already a common belief in the Catholic Church. The original image was painted in 1670 by Bartolome Esteban Murillo, a popular Spanish baroque painter best known for his religious works as well as realistic depictions of the everyday life. His work was characterized by both realism and tenebrism, or the contrast of light and shade, which he combined to make soft forms full of rich colors. The themes that gave Murillo the greatest success were religious. He received many important commissions from the religious orders of the Franciscans and the confraternities in Seville and Andalusia. Until the 19th century, he was the only Spanish artist widely known in the European world, and his work was widely imitated. This original oil painting now resides in Hermitage, St. Petersburg, Russia. The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated on August 15. The teens stayed at Jacob’s Ladder, a home for 91 physically and mentally disabled adults who were abandoned at some point in life. 18 parishioners, ranging from ages 15 to 54 years old, spent a long year preparing themselves for this trip in coordination with Mustard Seed Communities — and it was all worth it when they finally reached their week-long home! While there they got to meet the residents and learn their life stories. During the day they dug fence posts through limestone, carried pipe to a new location, and mixed cement for new sidewalk pathways. In the evening they would join with residents to sing and dance. A highlight was the nightly soccer matches with the Jamaican workers. The teens are excited about the possibility of returning next year!
