“Our goal was to collect 400,” said Mark
Schienberg, GNYADA President, referring to
last year’s campaign. “One dealership alone
collected 1,400 coats.”
As the winter season of 2013 was among
the coldest in recent history, the collection
made a significant impact.
“The outpouring of support was so
impressive,” said Schienberg.
He noted that those struggling to make ends
meet are to be found in all communities.
“We are seeing more people who are [in
need] and homeless,” he remarked. “People
around the country are struggling.”
Beyond assisting the working poor,
the annual coat drive also serves to help
thousands of homeless New Yorkers. As
they lack a secure place to store their coats
during the summer months, they must rely on

W
hen Steve Martínez squares off
against his next opponent, he
will have the strength of an entire
borough with him.
The professional boxer, who was born and
currently lives in the Bronx, will face Chris
Pearson in a junior middleweight bout in San
Antonio, TX on Dec. 12th.
While he might be fighting far from home
that night, it won’t feel that way to him.
“The Bronx is with me wherever I go,” said
Martínez. “I want to do well for the people
back home.”
The matchup with the undefeated Pearson,
which will be aired on the Showtime cable
television channel, is considered a major
stepping stone for the Bronx native as he
looks to challenge for a world championship
in the middleweight division.
“This fight is a big step up for me,” said
Martínez. “It’s against a good fighter and
millions of people have the potential to see
it.”
He is known for his powerful punching
style, which has earned him the nickname
“The Hitman.”
“Every opponent who stands in my way
is on my hit list, you could say,” remarked
Martínez, who recently moved into the top 30
in national rankings for middleweights.

At the suggestion of friends, Martínez
signed up for a boxing program with the
Police Athletic League (PAL) at age 12.
“I just never looked back after that,” he
recalled. “Boxing became my main focus
from that point on.”
While spending time in the ring was his
obsession, his family was simply glad he had
a suitable diversion.
“They were happy that I was in an after
school program to stay away from the streets
and out of trouble,” said Martínez, who
agrees that the positive influences in his life
kept him on the straight and narrow.
“Without the support of PAL and my
parents, I definitely could have gone in a
different direction,” said Martínez.
Now, that direction is up — his career has
been on the rise, with a record of 15-1, along
with 12 knockouts.
“Steve’s mental attitude is what sets
him apart,” commented Salita. “He’s very
focused, and he never backs down. He’s a
very hard puncher, and he’s not afraid to get
hit, which makes it more exciting for fans.”
Martínez understands that achieving glory
in his profession comes with a price.
“Boxing is serious business,” he said. “It’s

the hurt business, and you’re risking your
health to do this for a living.”
Despite the risks, he says he is committed
to achieving his goals, and has been anxiously
counting the days until his bout with Pearson.
“I know that after this fight, it’s going to
take me to another level,” he said. “I’ve
pushed myself every day to the max with
training. I try to stay positive, stay humble.”
Still, Martínez does allow himself to
daydream occasionally.
“I would love to win a world championship
someday and celebrate in the Bronx,” he
remarked.
He explained that if he were fortunate
enough to attain wealth from his boxing
career, he wouldn’t forget where he came
from.
“I’d like to give back to the Bronx,” said
Martínez. “I would definitely do something to
help kids or other people in need.”
Along with his visions of a championship
belt, there is another dream he harbors.
“I’d definitely like to have a street named
after me,” he said with a laugh. “Steve
Martínez Boulevard — I can see it now.”

organization’s 21st Annual Holiday Food
Drive on Wed., Dec. 17th from 10:00 a.m.

be accepted at Yankee Stadium’s Gate
2 entrance. Fans who donate at least 30
pounds will receive a voucher good for
two tickets to a designated Yankees home
game in 2015. All food collected will be
distributed to families in need throughout
the Bronx. In addition, the Yankees will
donate approximately 2,500 food vouchers
to the recipients of the collected food items.

The Parkchester Baptist Church will be

will be rapid on-site HIV testing; those who
take an HIV test will receive a MetroCard.

The Bronx Memoir
Project Anthology
debuts
T
he Bronx Council on the
Arts (BCA) and the Bronx
Writers Center have released
the groundbreaking anthology
Bronx Memoir Project –
Volume 1.
An unprecedented collection of over
fifty Bronx memoir fragments, the short,
autobiographical written works are penned
by the borough’s very own voices. As such,
the collection spans various generations,
continents, languages, cultures and themes.
The Bronx Memoir Project presents
dozens of aspiring Bronx writers contributing
personal memories and experiences to
the anthology. The authors all participated
in workshops facilitated by BCA’s Bronx
Writers Center and taught by professionals in
the field.
The project provided a stepping stone to
many who might otherwise not be published
or receive widespread publicity for their work.
In celebration, the official
Bronx Memoir Project – Volume 1 book
release event took place at the Longwood
Art Gallery on Wed., Dec. 3rd with books
available for purchase and download.
A number of the book’s contributors were
on hand and read excerpts from their stories.
The Bronx Memoir Project was
created by the BCA’s Bronx Writers
Center in order to develop and
refine memoir fragments written by
people of all ages, races, genders,
nationalities, and backgrounds.
To this end, memoir-writing
facilitators and other accomplished
literary artists — including BCA BRIO
winners — were deployed to various cultural
destinations throughout the Bronx in spring
of 2014. The workshop facilitators met with
writers at over 25 free writing sessions made
available to persons of all writing skill levels.
The resulting works were published in
traditional trade paperback and e-book
formats as Bronx Memoir Project – Volume 1,
a collection of over fifty submissions and the
first book ever published of its kind.

who continues to explore her
hometown.
“I am a Bronx native, daughter,
sister, mother of three beautiful
Bronx babies, photographer,
writer and motivator,” says
Martell, of Puerto Rican descent.
A paralegal for over 17 years
until December 2010, she has
since been dedicating her time to
exploring the Bronx.
Her energy and enthusiasm are
indefatigable, and admirable.
“I want to make my fellow
residents aware and informed
of how lovely our borough
is, what it offers, and how to
lend a helping hand in our
environment.”
Of this new time in her life,
Martell says, “I have never felt
so alive.”

Instagram is a photo and video application
that allows you to snap a picture on your
phone and share it with family and friends
by posting them to your account.
Though folks use their account for
various reasons, earlier this year I decided
to use my Instagram account to promote
the Bronx. Throughout the months, I have
posted over 1000 photographs and used the
hashtag “#intheBronx”.
My purpose was to highlight scenes,
parks, restaurants, architecture, art, life,
and history of our borough, and to promote
Joyce Kilmer Park.

In the hunt recently for a specific
photograph, my son and I had no choice but
to look through hundreds of photographs
on Instagram to find it. As we searched,
various photographs stirred up questions
and sparked conversation.
It wasn’t long before we were sidetracked
altogether as we shared one story after
another.
Photographs are captured moments, and
when you revisit the image, it often has the
ability of transporting you to a specific time
and place.
There are pictures of dishes I have eaten
at some wonderful Bronx restaurants
such as Taquería Tlaxcalli, Mexicocina,
El Habanero, Siete Ocho Siete, Sapito’s
and Spoto’s. There are images of amazing
buildings on the Grand Concourse, the Fish
Building, the Lewis Morris, the Executive
Tower, the old Concourse Plaza Hotel
and beautiful buildings all around the
Grand Concourse. There are also photos
taken within historic districts that include
old advertisements that still grace the
side of buildings, as well as markers and
signs with historical information. Then
there are pictures of urban scenes, which
include youths on skateboards, street art
and a few open hydrants. Also included
are photographs of well-known sites like
Yankee Stadium, New York Botanical
Garden and the Bronx Zoo.
But my favorite pictures are moments
captured in nature; there are pictures of
different sections of the Bronx River, the
Hutchinson River, and of trees and parks
throughout the borough.
As we searched, I identified a few of my
favorite pictures, all taken on the same day.
I had been in attendance at a meeting at
the top floor of the Executive Tower, and
took photos of Yankee Stadium and Joyce
Kilmer Park.
Much as I enjoyed taking those pictures,
reliving the moments proved even more
enjoyable. Poring through the photos
actually inspired us, and we’ve already
started a list of places we’d like to highlight
in 2015.
We love the Bronx, and know you do too.

agradable. Estudiar las fotos en realidad nos
inspiró, y ya hemos empezado una lista de
lugares que nos gustaría destacar en 2015.

Swimmingly swell

aya, 11, can beat her
14-year-old brother
and most of his friends in arm
wrestling.
She says it’s because of swimming.
The sixth-grader has been a member
of the Riverbank Redtails Swim Team,
composed of uptown swimmers, for the
past six years. “I want to be an Olympic
swimmer,” she said.
Team captain Wendy Ambrosio, 17, has
been with the team for eight years. The
Bronx native is a senior and wants to study
business at Fordham.
The teen said that when she became
captain, her father joked she was following
in his footsteps. He was captain of his
soccer team.
There are a lot of Hispanics on the
team—and that’s not typical, she added. “If
you’re Dominican, people think you should
be doing baseball—or if you’re Mexican,
you’re automatically playing soccer.”
These kids are dedicated, she said. “A lot
of them are training really hard. They are
sticking to practices to win.”
Coach Luis “Danny” Trinidad said that
Riverbank State Park’s pool gives the team
an edge.
“It’s an Olympic-size pool—50 meters in
length. This is a world-class venue,” he said.
The team is part of Metropolitan
Swimming, which is the local arm of the U.S.
national team.
The Redtails compete with other teams
around the city and the tri-state area. Once a
year, they also head overseas, often to Puerto
Rico or the Dominican Republic.
The group’s motto is “Play hard, swim
fast!”
Coach Danny, as everyone calls him,
started the Redtails in 1995 with just over 20
kids. As they are about to celebrate the team’s
20th anniversary, there are almost 80 children
in three separate groups—and another group
is about to be added.
Even kids who aren’t great swimmers
participate in meets. “It’s not like baseball
or basketball where you have to be one of
the five or ten best players on the team,”
he said. “Right from the beginning you’re
competing.”
There is a boatload of benefits to
swimming. Swimmers aren’t prone
to the same amount of injuries
or put stress on their bodies like other
athletes, and it is a healthy sport that people
can do all their lives.
“My mother learned to swim at age 55
because she had high blood pressure,”
reported Coach Danny. “She picked it up very
quickly and was able to manage her health a
lot better.”

“You burn a lot of energy during races,”
Coach Danny said. “The dynamic of exerting
yourself, recovery time and bouncing back—
you have to learn how to manage that. You
learn what foods work for you.”
Swimming certainly influences Maya’s
food choices. During the week, she adjusts
her meals according to her workouts. Her
teammates say they also think about what
they eat, although they aren’t perfect.
Alicia, 11, said, “It’s really hard for us
to eat healthy.” She’s been on the team for
six years. She loves swimming and being
on the team, and also likes its social aspect.

(NYPD) Officer Daniel Pantaleo
in the death of Eric Garner
drew disappointed and angry
protestors nationwide to take to
the streets.
In the days since the announcement,
thousands throughout New York City have
gathered to block and disrupt traffic at major
traffic intersections and thoroughfares. “Dieins” have been staged, including one at City
Hall by Councilmembers, and marches have
been punctuated with the chants of “We can’t
breathe” and signs that read “Hands Up, Don’t
Shoot”.
Uptown protestors lifted their voices of
discontent together on Thurs., Dec. 4th
when several hundred people gathered at
the intersection of 125th Street and Park
Avenue.
The march was organized, in part, by social
justice groups Boricuas for a Positive Image
and Black Economic Survival, and featured
many uptown residents who waved Puerto
Rican and Dominican flags in a show of
solidarity.
“It is inexplicable,” said Jennifer
Burmingham of the grand jury’s decision.
“They didn’t even bother to bring this to trial.
It feels like open season for black men and
boys in America.”
The concern was a personal matter for
Burmingham.
“As the mother of a black boy, I am terrified,”
she exclaimed. “What is it going to take?”
That the decision followed nine days after
a Missouri grand jury decided to not indict a
white police officer in the death of an unarmed
black teenager roused stinging condemnations
by some of what they say is an unequal justice
system.
“I think we should re-evaluate ourselves as
human beings,” said protestor Nate Carson.
“We are allowing people to get away with
murder, when we’ve always been taught not to
do that.”
“It is an injustice,” argued Pedro Pedraza. “It
comes to show that some lives are unworthy in
this society.”
He referred to the fact that Garner was
suspected of selling “loosies,” or untaxed
cigarettes, when Officer Pantaleo sought to
place him under arrest.

respecto a no presentar cargos contra el
oficial Daniel Pantaleo del Departamento
de Policía de Nueva York (NYPD por
sus siglas en inglés) por la muerte de
Eric Garner, provocó que manifestantes
decepcionados y enojados tomaran las
calles en todo el país.
En los días desde el anuncio, miles en toda
la ciudad de Nueva York se han reunido para
bloquear e interrumpir el tráfico en las principales
intersecciones de tránsito y vías públicas.
“Die-ins” han sido representados, entre ellos
uno en el Ayuntamiento por los concejales, y las
marchas han sido marcadas por los gritos de “No
podemos respirar” y letreros que dicen “Manos
arriba, no dispare”.

Reaching for the read

group of Bronx kindergarten
children filed into Morris
Heights Medical Center (MHHC)
this past Mon., Dec. 8th.
The students from PS 306 were there for
a visit designed to improve their overall
health and well-being.
But instead of wearing the nervous faces
of those about to face a doctor and/or a shot,
they were smiling, ear to ear.
That is because their prescription was
literacy. The children were there to have
books read to them and learn the importance
of using books at home, thanks to a
collaboration between Reach Out and Read,
which distributes free books to low-income
children, MHHC and Healthfirst, a nonprofit health insurer.
Reach Out and Read partners with local
medical centers such as MHHC to give free
books to children and youths each time they
visit the pediatrician.
The effort is aided by a new policy by
the American Academy of Pediatrics that
recommends doctors encourage families to
read aloud to their children from infancy, on
a daily basis.
“Studies have found that it’s important
to start reading to your
child as early as six months,”
said Asari Beale, Communications
Manager at Reach Out and Read of Greater
New York, which provides books to children
between the ages of six months and five years,
whenever they see their doctor.
“Those early years are so important to their
development,” said Beale, who stated that
Reach Out and Read assists 250,000 children
in New York City annually.
George Hulse, Vice President of External
Affairs for Healthfirst, visited MHHC to read
stories to the children.
He said that Healthfirst distributes 20,000
books per year throughout New York City,
through its partnership with Reach Out and
Read.
“As kids go to the doctor’s, they usually
think of taking care of their bodies, but we
need to make sure their minds are taken care
of as well,” said Hulse.
When children visit MHHC for a pediatric
checkup,

Chin, the center’s Senior Health Educator,
will read to them in the pediatric waiting
room, hand out books and speak with parents
about the importance of reading at home.
“Reading aloud in the doctor’s waiting

aloud at home,” said Chin.
The response from local families has been
very receptive, he added.
“This is a low-income neighborhood,” he
said. “They are happy to have books.”
Beale said that her organization’s efforts
are vital, as getting books in the hands of
Bronx children is a constant challenge.
“There’s only one full-service bookstore
in the entire borough,” stated Beale, in
reference to the Barnes and Noble store in
Co-op City. “It’s really difficult for children
in the Bronx to even get books.”

n grupo de niños de preescolar del
Bronx se presentó en el Centro
Médico Morris Heights (MHHC por sus
siglas en inglés) el pasado lunes 8 de
diciembre para una visita destinada a
mejorar su salud y bienestar en general.
Pero en lugar de tener las caras nerviosas
de que van a enfrentarse a un médico y/o una
inyección, estaban sonriendo, de oreja a oreja.
Eso es debido a que su receta fue la
alfabetización, los niños estaban allí para que
les leyeran libros y aprendieran la importancia
de utilizar los libros en casa, gracias a una
colaboración entre Reach Out and Read, que
distribuye libros gratuitos a niños de bajos
ingresos, MHHC y Healthfirst, una aseguradora
de salud sin fines de lucro.
Reach Out and Read se asocia con centros
médicos locales como MHHC para dar libros
gratis a niños y jóvenes cada vez que visitan al
pediatra.
El esfuerzo es apoyado por una nueva
política de la Academia Americana de Pediatría
que recomienda que los médicos animen a las

visitantes de la tienda, localizada en
la Calle 170 y Broadway, encontrarán
estantes llenos de una variedad de
vinos de todo el mundo.
“Somos más que un lugar donde la gente
va y recoge una botella y se va a casa” dijo
el gerente de la tienda Christian Galliani.
“Deseamos enseñar más acerca del vino”.
La tienda abrió primero en el 2008, fue
adquirida por su actual dueño Rohan Duggal
en el verano del 2013. Inmediatamente
el implementó su visión de hacer el vino
más accesible. “Deseaba añadir valor
a la comunidad y ayudar a fomentar la
apreciación al vino”, dijo Duggal. “Pienso
que Washington Heights está lista para una
tienda como esta”.
La tienda ofrece cata de vino tres veces a la
semana y auspicia una clase de apreciación del
vino en el cercano United Palace.
Galliani, quien fundó la página electrónica
‘Wine for the 99” para ofrecer recomendaciones
de vino personalizadas, originalmente fue
contratado por Duggal como consultor de vinos.
Pero con el tiempo, se enamoró tanto con la
atmósfera de la tienda que decidió trabajar ahí a
tiempo completo.

80-year-old mother Betty Lockwood, who
she shared stories about growing up in New
Jersey’s smallest licensed nursing home, the
same house where she, in turn, raised Eileen.
Lockwood said she believes that baking is
simply another way to care for people.
“That’s why when I bake, I bake with love.
While I’m baking, I say my prayers and have
my rosary on. I put blessed salt in the cake and
a tablespoon of holy water to bless the people
who receive the cake.”

Lockwood said that in addition to the
cakes she had brought to Renaissance, she

Services location, stopped in and donated 10
turkeys to give away as door prizes. Senator
Ruben Diaz Sr. also handed out $10 gift
cards for holiday food shopping.

New York State Electronic Waste Disposal Ban Starts January 1st
Starting January 1, 2015, a state law will make it illegal for New Yorkers to discard
most electronics in the trash. Sanitation workers will no longer collect electronics left at
curbside, and the resident may receive a summons.
The electronics covered by this New York State law include computers and their
peripherals, televisions, fax machines, VCRs, DVD players, printers/scanners, video game
consoles, MP3 players, tablets, and small servers.
The law does not include appliances, batteries, or light bulbs.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), electronics are the fastest
growing category of solid waste in the United States. In addition, electronics contain both
valuable and harmful materials, so it is important that they are responsibly recycled.
“This new law will help keep electronics, and their potentially harmful components, out
of our waste stream,” said Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn García. “By recycling
electronics, New Yorkers can help decrease disposal costs and protect the
environment.”
There are many FREE, convenient options to properly recycle your unwanted
electronics:
•DSNY’s e-cycleNYC program.
Apartment buildings with more than 10 units can enroll for this free
and convenient pickup service. In e-cycleNYC’s first year, the program
enrolled over 400 apartment buildings in all five boroughs and
recycled 255,000 pounds of e-waste.
•Retail drop-off programs.
There are more than 90 locations where you can drop off electronics
(no purchase required), including any Goodwill, Salvation Army, Best Buy,
Staples (no TVs), or the Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse.
•Free mail-back programs.

Bring to drop-off events run by organizations such as the Lower East Side Ecology Center,
or the Department of Sanitation’s SAFE Disposal Events.

“The whole team is my friend,” she said.
When not at the pool, the close-knit group
of swimmers will text each other often.
Former team members stay close, too. When
they stop by to say hello, they make sure to
update Coach Danny on what everyone else
is doing.
Teammates end up friends for life.
“For kids who don’t have a big family,
you create one. It’s almost like joining a
fraternity or sorority—and you do it at a
young age.”
Coach Danny learned to swim at age four.
His older brother learned in high school and
liked it. He made sure everyone else in the
family learned too. And when he got a job
as a lifeguard, he got all the other kids jobs
as well.
His mother, one of 16 siblings, moved
here from the Dominican Republic. He and
his seven brothers and sisters grew up in a
tough Brooklyn neighborhood without a lot
of resources. “Swimming was a big dynamic
in the family,” he said. “It provided structure
and kept us busy.”
After Coach Danny started working
at Riverbank State Park, his brother
encouraged him to start a swim team. “I’m
carrying on a family tradition here,” he said.
Parents appreciate what the team does for
their families, too. Malini Dacy’s 12-yearold daughter Danyella recently joined the
team. She likes the fact that a few of her
daughter’s teammates attend her school.

part of something and have that social

team and knowing what that feels like.”
Belkis Delacruz’s son Anthony, 17, has
been on the team since he was eight. She said
it’s changed him for the better.
She never wanted her son to come home
from school only to watch TV or play video
games. “Now he’s so busy he has no time to
be hanging out in the street,” she said. “It’s an
excellent program.”

from parents is, ‘Why do I need to read to my
baby, when they can’t understand what I’m
saying?’ But reading at such a young age is
vital to their language development.”
Beale said that families participating in
Reach Out and Read are four times more
likely to read to their children. “Also, our
kids have been entering kindergarten with
increased vocabularies and developmental
skills,” she commented.
“We want children to be comfortable with
education,” explained Hulse. “By giving
them books of their own, it fosters a love of
reading, which can help them in school and
stay with them their entire lives.”
At the MHHC event, Hulse read Ezra Jack
Keats’ classic book The Snowy Day as the
children sat riveted.
Hulse put his all into reading the story,
bouncing around in animated fashion and
gesturing dramatically as the students giggled.

New York Cares was founded in the late
1980’s by a group of friends concerned
about social issues. Today, New York Cares
is the city’s largest volunteer management
organization, running volunteer programs for
1,300 nonprofits, city agencies, and public
schools, in the five boroughs.
“We serve as a connector for people who
want to volunteer,” explained Nefisah Sallim,
the organization’s Community Partner
Relations Manager.
The agency works with nonprofit social
service agencies, churches, schools, and
shelters to ensure coats are distributed as
quickly as they are collected.
The coat drive initiative was launched 26
years ago, and the organization estimates it
has raised over one million coats since its
inception.
“Our goal this year is to raise about 100,000
coats,” said Sallim. “We have already received
80,000 requests for coats.”
She urged everyone with a coat or more to
spare to bring them all in.
“We have a civic responsibility to help each
other,” said Sallim. “It is a beautiful thing to
help yourself and help your neighbor.”
The collection deadline is December 31st.

Un grupo de concesionarios de automóviles
locales quiere hacer más que ofrecerte moverte,
quieren que contribuyas.
La Asociación de Concesionarios de
Automóviles del área metropolitana de Nueva
York (GNYADA por sus siglas en inglés) se ha
asociado con New York Cares para recolectar
abrigos usados para distribuir entre hombres,
mujeres y niños que de otra manera pasarían frío
este invierno.
La campaña de colecta de abrigos se inició
oficialmente en el Grupo Automotriz LaSorsa en la
avenida Webster el jueves 4 de diciembre.
Sesenta concesionarios de automóviles se han
inscrito para ayudar con la campaña.
“Creo que las donaciones van a ser
abrumadoras”, predijo John LaSorsa, dueño de
LaSorsa Auto Group, y miembro del Consejo de
Administración de GNYADA. Dijo que confía en
que un espectáculo de generosidad similar se vea
este año.
“Esta es la época de dar”.
No es la primera vez que LaSorsa Auto Group
se involucra en la caridad.
“El año pasado, obsequiamos 150 regalos
de Navidad a la comunidad”, dijo LaSorsa. La
