What is new again is old and what is old is new — If you’re looking for a phrase to describe today’s parish life, this is a good one. In the last ten years, the Church’s transitions through three popes, major changes to the translation of the liturgy, and shrinkage of the ordained priesthood and religious communities have left many U>S> Catholic lay people feeling spiritually alone. Amid these challenges and changes, many Catholics remain Christ centered in small faith communities (SFCs) where they find a sense of peace and fell welcome. SFCs are a great example of “what is old is new”. They are rooted in Church life as given to us in Acts of the Apostles 2:42: “They devoted themselves to the teaching of the apostles and to the communal life, to the breaking of the bread and to the prayers”. Todays SFCs arise from the example of the people who took the example from Acts as the foundation of the “base communities” of the Catholic Church in South America. In the poorest of the slums, members of these communities gathered to grow in their faith and challenge the institutions that denied them fundamental human rights. What were marks of the early Christian community became the same examples that led to the renewal of the faith among the poor in South and Latin America. The Why Catholic program was implemented by the Archdiocese of Miami in our parish in February 2014. The first meeting of our 15 members took place on Wednesday, February 26th. It is a four year program. Many companies will match gifts made to endowments. That means your gift may be worth more than you think. Ask your employer if it has a matching gift program. For more information, contact the rectory or call the Office of Planned Giving at (305) 762-1110.
