The Fifth Sunday of Easter April 28, 2013 As Today`s Gospel is so

Page 2 The Fifth Sunday of Easter April 28, 2013 As Making the Most of the Remaining Easter Season Today’s Gospel is so familiar that we are likely to let it flow over us without paying much attention to what it is saying. There is one word in it, however, that should give us pause. That word is “as.” Big problems can come in small packages. It may be difficult for us to remember to keep the Easter celebration going during the 50 days of the season. Here are a few ways to revitalize your Easter attitude: The commandment of universal love makes a lot of sense. It is really no more than an affirmation of human solidarity and of our nature as social beings. We all recognize that the world would be a better place if we all followed this path. Why we do not is a great mystery, the answer to which would probably win us a Nobel Peace Prize. Loving everyone may be dauntingly difficult, but that is still not enough for Jesus. The commandment he proposes is that we love others in the same way as he did. “As I have loved you, so you also should love one another.” This recalls those other hard sayings of the Gospel, “Forgive us as we forgive” and “Be Perfect as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Before such words as these we probably feel as overcome as the first disciples did when they exclaimed, “Who, then, can be saved?” (Mark 10:26). Jesus’ response to them should also strengthen our resolve. “For human beings it is impossible, but not for God; all things are possible for God” (Mark 10:27). When a commandment is given, God also gives us the grace to fulfill it. Jesus’ instruction to love as he loved is not a mere precept; it is a promise. More than that, it is what is given us in the gift of new life, a new heart, capable of a wider loving. The gift is an answer to St. Augustine’s prayer: “Give what you command, and then command whatever you will.” —Do something special with your family for each of the remaining Sundays of Easter. Make a unique meal, go for a family hike, have a family movie night. —Show reverence for God’s creation by spending time outdoors. —Remember the poor, oppressed and lonely by making a special donation, serving a meal at a local agency or keeping them in your prayers. —Spend time with family members whom you might not see that often. Even a 30 minute visit will go a long way toward building relationships. —Change your menu to fit the liturgical year. Since it’s Easter, make a point to have celebratory items such as dessert, wine or other treats you wouldn’t normally have. —Make a point to dine with your family. Sit together and talk. —Have guests for Sunday dinner. Observing the Easter season with a small community gathered around your table is truly an extension of the Eucharist. By serving our families and friends we live out the paschal mystery in the way Jesus taught. —Reflect on the extraordinary nature of Christ’s gift of life to us. We have been freed from death. Each day, take a moment to think about the profound meaning of the Resurrection. —Fr. Michael Casey, Give Us This Day Everyone is Welcome to Attend the Anointing of the Sick Mass Saturday, May 4th 9am —Do less, Slow down and indulge in a simpler schedule. Make time for prayer. You have the whole summer to do yard work or house projects. —OSV Newsweekly Page 3 The Fifth Sunday of Easter Mass Intentions Saturday...……………..April 27 5:00PM………†Janice Morzinski/George Morzinski, Spec. Page 5 The Fifth Sunday of Easter Saint Joseph the Worker Feast Day May 1 Joseph understood the importance of work. He was a carpenter—a builder—and probably taught Jesus his trade. Through his work, Joseph honored the Father in heaven and continued the act of creation. He lived in dignity. To give workers a patron, the Church turned to Joseph, who had been made the Patron of the Universal Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870 and the model for fathers of families. Joseph was named protector of workers by Pope Benedict XV, and in 1955, the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker on May 1 was proclaimed by Pius the XII. Let us pray to Saint Joseph for his help in all our work and for those many people who want and need jobs but cannot find them. Kid’s Corner In today’s Gospel we hear Jesus tell us to love one another as He has loved us. Put that love into action this week by finding someone in your neighborhood, school, place of work, or within your family who sometimes feels left out. Reach out to that person with the kind of love Jesus describes in this Gospel. Make them feel welcome and know they are a child of God. Perhaps you will send them a greeting card, say a special prayer for them, visit them, or invite them to your home. When your action is complete, share with your family where you saw Jesus in the experience you had with the person. —rclblectionary.com Help Wanted: repairing wooden floors in the Altar Society’s sheds. With mercy and patience, God offers us this time so that we might learn every day to recognize him in the poor and the small, might strive for the good, and might be vigilant in prayer and love. The Lord, at the end of our existence and of history, may then recognize us as good and faithful servants.” —Pope Francis speaking to a general audience on April 17, 2013 about the key to final judgment: Love. Faith makes us taste in advance the light of the beatific vision...Faith is already the beginning of eternal life. (CCC 163) Perhaps there is no greater mystery in the Christian life than the very gift that began that “Christian life” in the first place, namely, the gift of the theological virtue of faith. It is by this virtue that we come to know God as he is in himself. We are able to grow in knowledge and therefore in love for him. We thus begin our eternal life here on earth! We then realize that the words of St. John’s Gospel are not an empty promise: “Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes has eternal life” (Jn 6:47). Christ does not say “will have eternal life,” nor does he say “might have eternal life.” Christ definitively states that the believer has eternal life at that very moment of belief. This “eternal life” then is a reality in the present and not only some longed-for or long-off reward. In truth, the eternal reward of beatitude will be, according to our capacity, the full knowledge and love of God as he is. But this truth need not deny that we can have a share of that glory even now in the present. “So faith is already the beginning of eternal life.” —Fr. James M. Sullivan, O.P. from Magnificat Year of Faith Companion Culture of Life Family Services Cordially invites you to the third annual Our Lady’s Tea Sunday, May 19th 2:00-4:00pm At the home of Claire Reiss La Jolla, CA Tickets are $40.
