eterna. Amén.

Bergoglio I
We have been charmed by Pope Francis, and many have at the same time been confused by his leadership. I plan to write about
him in these reflections and to share some of his biography as well as what I have come to understand as his guiding principle of
leadership as Pope. The biographical details come from a book I recently read: The Great Reformer by Austen Ivereigh, who is an
old friend of Cardinal Bergoglio’s. Few Americans saw his election coming, although oddly Fr. Fabio who was at the time at IHM
had been saying it would be “Bergoglio” throughout the transition period. Essentially unknown among English speaking
Catholics, but well known in Latin America, he was in fact the “runner-up” during the previous Conclave that elected Benedict
XVI, and for those who had their eyes on Latin America, his election was no surprise. Many serious Catholics have been confused
by what sometimes seems an overly permissive attitude on his part, while at the same time delighted with his warmth and direct
approach. All too often in the first couple years of his Pontificate we have heard Vatican news sources say things like: “what the
Holy Father meant to say…” when he appeared to make statements that ignored essential Catholic teaching and deemphasized the
focus on difficult moral teachings such as abortion and gay marriage. That Pope Benedict was fully in support of his election and
manner of governance of the Universal Church is no secret, although Benedict’s style and governance were very different. IHM
pray for us, Fr. Jerry
BERGOGLIO I

Last year on this Sunday, Pope Francis declared this year a Jubilee Year of
Mercy. Saint John Paul II named the Second Sunday of Easter “Sunday of
Divine Mercy” in response to Saint Faustina Kowalska’s Divine Mercy
devotion, which offered spiritual comfort to hearts worldwide. But Francis
challenges us to make that comfort we receive a gift we gladly share: “We
are called to show mercy because mercy has first been shown to us.” The
clearest expression of merciful love, says Francis, is pardoning others. “At
times how hard it seems to forgive!” he acknowledges. “And yet pardon is
the instrument placed into our fragile hands to attain serenity of
heart” (Misericordiae Vultus, 9). The necessary condition for living
joyfully? “To let go of anger, wrath, violence, and revenge.” May Divine
Mercy Sunday in this Jubilee Year of Mercy remind us that Jesus made
mercy our life’s ideal and a criterion for our faith’s credibility: “Blessed
are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy” (Matthew 5:7).
