Gospel Acclamation
Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated
at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he
will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

eterna. Amén.

Bergoglio III
In the process of becoming Pope a few things he did speak powerfully of his love for God, and for God’s people. His first day as
pope he crossed Rome in a taxi to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which houses an ancient icon of Mary called “Salus
Populi Romani” which translates “protector of the Roman people,” by tradition painted by St. Luke himself. It is the center piece
of a magnificent chapel where St. Ignatius Loyola celebrated his first mass in 1538, and to which Francis made his first stop to
pray for the people of the City of Rome, leaving before her a bouquet of flowers. Upon his return he stopped by the hotel room he
had rented for the conclave, packed his suitcase, paid his bill, which shocked everyone, and after looking into the papal apartments
which he described as a “gilded cage” decided not to live there and moved into Domus Santa Marta, [Saint Martha’s house] a
residence for Vatican workers, where he could have a simple apartment with a small bedroom and a sitting room/office; he chose
to take his meals in the cafeteria there rather than eat alone as papal tradition had been for hundreds of years. Likewise rather than
daily mass privately in the Pope’s chapel, he celebrates in the chapel at the Domus so that he is not alone but with common folk.
Calling his only surviving sister, Elena in Buenos Aires she told him “I wish I could give you a hug” but he said “we are together;
you are very close to my heart.” Despite their closeness, she mentioned how “complicated” it is to have your own brother be the
pope! IHM pray for us, Fr. Jerry
BERGOGLIO III

Jubilee of Mercy
Good Shepherd Sunday: World Day of Prayer for Vocations
This Sunday celebrates Jesus as “the Good Shepherd.” When announcing
this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis focused on Jesus’ “lost sheep”
parable in Luke. “[Who] among you,” Jesus asks, “having a hundred sheep
and losing one of them would not leave the ninety-nine in the desert and
go after the lost one until he finds it?” (Luke 15:4). A reasonable answer?
“No responsible shepherd who wants to keep the job!” Yet Jesus considers
one lost person supremely important and suggests blaming the shepherd.
The sheep didn’t “go astray,” the shepherd “lost” it. Thus, “when he does
find it, he sets it on his shoulders with great joy” (15:5). That tender image
of Jesus adorns the simple cross Pope Francis has always worn, the Good
Shepherd gently carrying the lost sheep home on his shoulders. During this
Jubilee Year of Mercy, may we, who once were lost ourselves but now are
found, join Jesus in seeking, finding, and gently carrying home at least one
precious lamb.
