Entrance Chant: Glory and Praise to Our God
Gospel Acclamation
Apostle’s Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and
earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was
buried; he descended into hell; on the third day he rose
again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated
at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he
will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection
of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

Aclamación del Evangelio
¡Aleluya, Aleluya! ¡Aleluya, Aleluya!
eterna. Amén.

BERGOGLIO II
Where were you when you heard the news that the new Pope would be Francis? I was in the dentist chair at Dr.
Hockel’s office in Concord, when someone burst in and said “habemus Papam!” Latin for “we have a new Pope!” I
practically choked on the dental instruments, but sat up and we watched on the TV as he came out onto the balcony of
St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome….”Who is he?” I wondered. And with no previous Pope named Francis, which Francis
was he choosing for his namesake? Being a Jesuit one of the few things we knew about him at the time, I figured it
was St. Francis Xavier who was a companion of St. Ignatius Loyola the founder of the Jesuits. But no, it was St.
Francis of Assisi, the most popular saint, called in Italy “il Poverello” – the poor one, because in the 13th Century he
embraced “holy poverty” in a new way. The story circulated shortly after the election that his friend Brazilian
Cardinal Claudio Hummes hugged him and whispered: “Don’t forget the poor.” He would not forget them. Holy
Thursday rolled around shortly after his installation, and he delighted some, and outraged others when he skipped the
solemn liturgy of washing 12 cardinals’ feet during Mass and went instead to the most notorious prison in Rome and
washed 12 men’s feet, including a Muslim! More than anything this symbolizes his approach, but how to understand
it? IHM pray for us, Fr. Jerry
BERGOGLIO II
Yo me

Jubilee of Mercy
How appropriate today’s Gospel for this Jubilee Year of Mercy, both
because of the “breakfast” Jesus provides (“a charcoal fire with fish on it
and bread”) and the number of fish in Peter’s net (“one hundred fiftythree”) (John 21:11–12). Of the fish, Saint Augustine suggests that the
roasted fish is the suffering Christ. Saint Gregory the Great adds that Christ
lowered himself to swim in the “water” of our humanity; to be caught in
the “net” of our death; to be “roasted” in his Passion on the fire of
suffering. Saint Jerome claims that “one hundred fifty-three” represents the
full number of known species of fish, signifying that the Church’s “net”
has room for all our widely diverse humanity, securing our unityindiversity in the hands of Peter and his successors. Having received God’s
mercy as “the beating heart of the Gospel,” may the Church—we—
“pattern [our] behavior after the Son of God who went out to everyone
without exception .”(Misericordiae Vultus, 12).

Vultus, 12).
