TODAY'S READINGS
First Reading -- The apostles perform many signs and wonders
among the people. Many are added to their numbers (Acts 5:1216).
Psalm -- Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting (Psalm 118).
Second Reading -- John, caught up in the spirit, envisions the
glorified Lord, the first and the last, the one who lives
(Revelation 1:9-11a, 12-13, 17-19).
Gospel -- The risen Christ comes to his disciples with peace and
the Spirit. The absent Thomas doubts
(John 20:19-31).

Our Parish Centennial Corner: The Sun Dances!
Jubilee Year of Mercy
Once I was dead,
but now I am alive
forever and ever.

JOINING THE COMPANY OF
BELIEVERS
What will help you to believe? Today's
scripture readings tell of faith and doubt.
They offer stories "recorded to help you
believe," as the passage from John's
Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is
an urgency about this. On this Second
Sunday of Easter we are challenged to
join the company of believers--countless
men and women who witnessed the
power of the apostles' faith.
There is no doubt that this power comes
from Jesus Christ. The second reading,
from the book of Revelation, reports
John's mystical vision of the Son of
Man, who proclaims, "Once I was dead,
but now I live" (Revelation 1:18). The
Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to
see the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy
Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who
have come along later must have faith so
that we can have life.

The Sacramento Bee, “The American Book of Days” notes that in the early 1900s, Protestant
churches began adopting the Catholic custom of sunrise Mass on Easter. “There is a
traditional belief that on Easter morning the sun dances and that those who rise in time can
see it,” the book reads. “A custom has arisen of holding a religious service on a mountaintop
to watch for the rising sun.”
We may not see the sun dance on Easter, but the Son of God was risen from the dead,
making us want to dance for joy! And we continue to celebrate his Death and Resurrection
every time we gather for the Eucharist, we continue to rejoice every Sunday, the little Easter.
Those who came to St. Martin a century ago believed in the same Risen Lord.
Mark your calendar for our “fun in the sun” Centennial Picnic on Saturday, June 18, from
10am-2pm, on our school campus. If you can help, come to a picnic planning meeting on
Thursday, April 7 at 6:30pm in Cottrell Center. Have a blessed Easter season!

UNIRSE A LA COMUNIDAD DE
CREYENTES
¿Qué te ayudará a tener fe? Las lecturas
bíblicas de hoy hablan de la fe y de la
duda. Se "escribieron. . . para que ustedes crean", como nos dice hoy el pasaje
del Evangelio de san Juan (20:31). Tiene
esto una cierta urgencia. En este Segundo Domingo de Pascua se nos lanza
un desafío a unirnos a la comunidad de
creyentes -un sinnúmero de hombres y
mujeres que dan testimonio del poder de
la fe de los Apóstoles.
No hay duda que este poder viene de
Jesucristo. La segunda lectura, del libro
del Apocalipsis, relata la visión mística
de Juan sobre el Hijo del Hombre, el
cual proclama: "Estuve muerto y de
nuevo soy el que vive" (Apocalipsis
1:18). El Evangelio reúne a todos excepto a Tomás para ver a Jesús resucitado y recibir de él el Espíritu Santo.
Al igual que Tomás, los que hemos llegado más tarde debemos tener fe para
poder tener vida.

TRADICIONES DE
NUESTRA FE
La Iglesia católica es universal, extendida en diversas naciones y culturas. A
través de los siglos estas culturas han
enriquecido la Tradición de la Iglesia
con muchas tradiciones y devociones
que van más allá de su cultura de origen.
La fiesta de la Divina Misericordia es un
buen ejemplo. Viene de una devoción
que nació en Polonia con la Hermana
Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) canonizada en el 2000.
La devoción a la Divina Misericordia se
celebra el Segundo Domingo de Pascua
y durante todo el año orando la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia. En latinoamérica se ha ido extendiendo esta
devoción desde 1978 cuando fue aprobada por el Papa Paulo VI. En todas
partes se puede encontrar la imagen de la
Divina Misericordia, Jesús de pie con
rayos rojos y blanco-azules que brillan
desde su corazón hacia el mundo. Lleva
el lema: Jesús, confío en ti.
La finalidad de esta devoción es recordar
al pecador que la misericordia de Dios es
infinita e inagotable. Es una misericordia
que debemos imitar para que la paz
pueda reinar en nuestros corazones y en
nuestra tierra.

Tôi xin một lần nữa kêu gọi sự hỗ trợ của quý ông bà anh chị
em cho chương trình Quyên Góp Hằng Năm của Giáo Phận
chúng ta. Món quà đóng góp cho ADA của quý vị giúp Giáo
Hội tiếp tục phục vụ để hiển lộ dung mạo của Thiên Chúa yêu
thương, đặc biệt cho những người đang có nhu cầu khNn thiết
nhất. Chúng ta làm điều này qua các mục vụ giáo lý, phụng vụ,
giáo dục và công bình xã hội.

Niềm Tin
Kết quả một cuộc điều tra mới đây tại Pháp cho thấy
84% người Pháp cho mình là người công giáo, nghĩa là có
lãnh nhận Bí tích Rửa Tội. Nhưng chỉ có 32% là con tin
vào sự sống lại. Và người ta phỏng đoán đến năm 2020 thì
con số những người tin vào sự sống lại sẽ giảm xuống, chỉ
còn độ 10%.
Nếu số liệu trên là sát với thực tế và điều phỏng đoán
trên là đáng tin cậy, thì tình trạng niềm tin hôm nay quả là
bi đát. Tại sao lại có hiện tượng ấy?
Phải chăng con người ngày nay quá quen với những kỹ
thuật khoa học có thể kiểm chứng, để không còn nhạy cảm
đủ với niềm tin, vốn khởi đi từ những cảm nghiệm. Hay nói
theo kiểu thánh Phaolô: Vì quá mải mê những sự dưới đất
đến nỗi không còn tha thiết với những sự trên trời. Chính vì
thế, chúng ta cần phải khám phá lại niềm tin vào Đức Kitô
phục sinh, là nền tảng cho cuộc sống của người tín hữu
hôm nay.
Như chúng ta đã biết Phục Sinh là một biến cố quan
trọng bởi vì không có nó thì niềm tin sẽ trở thành một việc
luống công vô ích, thế mà biến cố quan trọng ấy chỉ được
ghi nhận bằng một sự kiện đơn giản: Ngôi mộ trống rỗng.
Thế nhưng điều đơn giản ấy nếu không là dấu chứng lịch
sử để mà biện bạch thì lại là dấu chỉ mở về một thực tại
khác. Đó là niềm tin Phục Sinh qua những chặng đường
khám phá.
Thực vậy, từ khám phá đầu tiên về cửa mồ mở toang,
khiến Mađalena phải hốt hoảng, tới khám phá tiếp theo về
dây băng còn nguyên và khăn liệm được cuộn lại, khiến
Phêrô phải kinh ngạc không nói nên lời, để rồi kết thúc
bằng khám phá bất ngờ của Gioan khi ông nối kết những
dấu chỉ kia với lời Kinh Thánh để làm bừng lên một cảm
nghiệm mới và hết sức lạ lùng: ông đã tin.
Mồ rỗng và khăn liệm còn đó là gì nếu không phải là một
dấu chỉ cho sự phục sinh theo Kinh Thánh. Thực vậy, Đức Kitô
là Thiên Chúa hằng sống, nên Ngài không thể bị chôn vùi trong
cõi chết. Là Đấng quyền năng, nên Ngài không thể bị giam hãm
trong ngục thất của tử thần. Là Đấng của vĩnh cửu, nên Ngài
không thể bị giới hạn trong thời gian. Là ánh sáng, lẽ nào Ngài lại
bị bao vây bởi bóng tối. Là Đấng tạo dựng, lẽ nào Ngài lại bị thân
phận con người cầm chân. Bởi đó không còn một cách nào khác
hơn là Ngài đã phục sinh.
Từ đó, ngày Phục Sinh được gọi là ngày Chúa nhật, ngày của
Chúa. Biến cố Phục Sinh không phải chỉ là một biến cố có tính
cách lịch sử mà hơn thế nữa, còn là một biến cố làm nên lịch sử,
vì biến cố ấy không ngừng được công bố và trở thành nền tảng
niềm tin cho cả Giáo Hội. Bởi vì một khi Đức Kitô là đầu đã
sống lại, thì chúng ta là chi thể, một ngày kia cũng sẽ sống lại,
nếu như chúng ta trung thành gắn bó mật thiết với Ngài.

TRADITION
We return to our reflections on the rites
of marriage with a brief consideration of
reforms from the Council of Trent.
When the Protestant Reformation took
hold, the fairly recent achievements of
the Church in regard to the sacrament of
marriage were reviewed with a critical,
reforming eye. In general, Protestants
returned to an earlier view that marriage
was a civil matter, although some said
that the civil society had to be in harmony with Christian teaching. In the
Catholic Church, the Council of Trent
took the question up in 1563, and decided to shore up its teaching on the sacramentality of marriage. They identified
many threats to this, including secret
marriages and easy divorce. So they
enacted laws that still govern our practice today: to be valid, marriage consent
must be exchanged in the presence of a
priest and two witnesses. Ever since
Trent, marriages must also be announced
three weeks in advance to the community, and recorded in a register. In some
places in the world, the "banns" are still
posted in the public square. In the
United States, parishes sometimes publish the "banns" in the bulletin.
Anyone who has ever watched a soap
opera has seen the standard scene of a
minister announcing gravely, "If there is
anyone here present who sees any reason
why these two should not be married . .
." This bit of drama has no place in the
Catholic liturgy, but survives among
Protestants who broke with us before
Trent edited this cliff-hanger out of our
public prayer.
