Altar Server Ministry Next Scheduled Training: Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 5:45 pm in the Church. The ministry of altar server is open to all boys and girls in the parish and school who are at least 10 years old and have received their First Holy Communion. As an active minister in the Mass, altar serving enables you to gain a greater appreciation and understanding of your faith, and of the Liturgy of the Church. It also promotes responsibility, service and leadership. During training, potential servers become familiar with the various parts of the Mass, and what roles our Altar Servers play during parts of the Liturgy. Following the training, new servers are assigned to shadow an experienced server for some hands-on training during the Saturday morning 8:00 a.m. mass. Follow-up training is then offered a few weeks later until the server is ready to be incorporated into the weekend schedule. We invite all those who are interested and meet the requirements to pray on this special call to service. If you would like more information or would like to sign up, please call Ron & Marla Rodriguez at 714-290-5459 or send an e-mail to: [email protected]. Thank you. Thanks to our Advertisers! This study is open to all women of the parish and will provide an opportunity not only to learn more about our faith, but to be able to share our thoughts with others. The cost for this session is $20, which will cover speakers, printing, and supplies. No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. We welcome you, even if you can attend only limited meetings. Recently the Mission Board hosted a meeting upon the arrival of several representatives of Healey International Relief Foundation. You may remember from the May Mission News column about the “Fatima House of Light” report about how our money helps the homeless women rescued from prostitution in Sierra Leone, West Africa. This is a part of the Healey International Relief Foundation which we support. Our visitors were Father Peter Konteh, Chairman of the Healey Advisory Board, Benjamin Parra, and Megan Smith of the Foundation Office. Father works mainly in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Father Peter told about the heavy toll of the Civil War that the country had gone through for 10 years. An amputation hospital was made to care especially for the people who had their hands and arms cut off by the rebels. (Why such atrocities? If people would not work for the rebels, then the rebels made sure they did not work for the other side.) Father established St. Mary’s Children’s Home in 1997 in Bo to care for war orphans whose parents were killed, maimed and disabled and unable to care for their children. St. Mary’s has thrived and can count university students among its alumni today. When Ebola spread its misery to Sierra Leone, Father Peter went to raise awareness at the international level, notably through his presentation to the U.S. Senate in September 2014. He made a similar presentation in the U.K. House of Commons. As you can imagine, Father Peter is very dedicated to the people of his country. He began social work well before his ordination to the priesthood and has maintained a remarkable balance between social and pastoral work. He is an amazing priest, and we could have listened to him for hours. Watch for more about Father Peter in Mission News. Remember to use the Blue Mission Envelopes for your donation so we can keep helping our missionaries. And how about a “thank you” to St. Cecilia for letting Mission Ministry continue!
