Quite a few came to confession and it was a joyful time. For some it would be impossible to go to confession because of sickness or they are working the late shift. For others, however, the obstacles of fear or complacency pose greater challenges to crossing the doorway of the confessional, which is an oasis of mercy. One of those fears would be fear of the priest. "What would he say?" "What would he think of me?" "¿Qué me dirá?" "¿Qué pensará de mí?" Sometimes this fear even influences a person's understanding of confession and leads them to make false rationalizations. So they would say, "I don't have to go to confession if I can go to God directly." Yet, we know that Jesus made the Apostles the dispenser of God's mercy and forgiveness. St. Paul, in today's first reading, recognizes this when he calls himself an Ambassador of God's mercy. Going back to the fear of the priest, I would like to quote Tertullian, an ancient theologian. He was also addressing fear of confession (maybe its consoling to think that hundreds of years ago people were also afraid of confession). Tertullian speaks of the perceived danger of telling someone else your sins. But then he speaks of the difference of going to your brother, the priest. "But among brethren and fellow-servants, where there is common hope, fear, joy, grief, suffering, because there is a common Spirit from a common Lord and Father, why do you think these brothers to be anything other than yourself? The body cannot feel gladness at the trouble of any one member, it must necessarily join with one consent in the grief, and in laboring for the remedy. In a company of two is the church; but the church is Christ. When, then, you cast yourself at the brethren’s knees, you are handling Christ, you are entreating Christ" (ANF-CE3, Ch. 10). To sum up the quote, we priests are your brothers who are also struggling sinners. We have been set aside to be there for you. We are like the father waiting for his son's return with great anguish and longing. Let us all learn to rush to confession and to go regularly (once a month or so), even if we have no serious sins to confess. CUARTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA 3 Bilingual Healing Mass Wednesday, March 9 6:30pm “Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you; therefore He exalts Himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for Him. Yes, O people in Zion who dwell at Jerusalem; you shall weep no more. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry.” Isaiah 30:18-19 Though sometimes we have to wait for God’s mercy to be made apparent, we still cling to hope and trust that He does hear our cries. We have the examples of the persistent widow in scripture (Luke 18:1-8) and St. Augustine’s mother who prayed for many years for his conversion. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, let us continue to call on God’s great mercy and healing love, even if it is simply for spiritual healing. Father will anoint the sick after the homily and pray with people individually after Mass. Spring Bazaar April 10 from 11am to 9pm Come join the fun!
