HAVE A SAFE AND MERRY CHRISTMAS
Decorating our homes and businesses is a long-standing tradition around the holiday season. The United
States Fire Administration, however, reminds us that these same decorations may increase the chances of
fire. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) note that an
estimated 240 fires involving Christmas trees and another 150fires involving holiday lights and other
decorative lighting occur each year.
Together, these fires resulted in 21 deaths and $25.2 million in property damage. Following a few
simple fire safety tips can keep electric lights, candles, and the ever popular Christmas tree from
creating a tragedy
CHRISTMAS TREES
What’s a traditional Christmas morning scene without a beautifully decorated tree? If your
household includes a natural tree in its festivities, take to heart the sales person’s suggestion –
“Keep the tree watered.”
Christmas trees account for hundreds of fires annually. Typically, shorts in electrical
lights or open flames from candles, lighters or matches start tree fires. Well-watered trees
are not a problem. A dry and neglected tree can be.
SELECTING A TREE FOR THE HOLIDAYS
Needles on fresh trees should be green and hard to pull back from the branches, and
the needles should not break if the tree has been freshly cut. The trunk should be
sticky to the touch. Old trees can be identified by bouncing the tree trunk on the
ground. If many needles fall off, the tree has probably dried out, and is a fire hazard.
CARING FOR YOUR TREE
Do not place your tree close to a heat source, including a fireplace or heat vent. The heat will dry out the tree, causing it to be
more easily ignited by heat, flame or sparks. Be careful not to drop or flick cigarette ashes near a tree. Do not put your live tree up
too early or leave it up for longer than two weeks. Keep the tree stand filled with water at all times.
DISPOSING OF YOUR TREE
For your convenience, the City of Azusa and Athens Services will be collecting and recycling Christmas trees placed at
residential curbsides or near trash bin enclosures. Last year thousands of trees were recycled from Azusa through this program.
This season, from December 26 through the second week in January, all Christmas trees placed at residential
curbsides or near trash bin enclosures at multi-family dwellings will be picked up by Athens Services. Most trees
will be picked up on the normal trash collection day.
Christmas trees will be ground up and used as mulch or a cover material at the local landfill. All
plastic containers, lights, metal stands, ornaments, and the bulk of tinsel must be
removed. Flocked trees or trees coated with a fire retardant will be accepted. All
trees over 6 feet in length must be cut in half.
If you miss the Christmas tree pick-up date, please cut up your tree into four foot
sections and place it in your green yard waste container(s). If you have any questions, please call Athens Services at 336-3636.

HANDS ACROSS AZUSA —
”WE SHALL OVERCOME”
On Sunday, January 12, 2014 the City of Azusa’s Human Relations Commission
will host the annual Hands Across Azusa celebration to be held on the front lawns in front
of City Hall, 213 E. Foothill Blvd. in Azusa. The event will begin at 1:00 P.M. and go until
3:00 P.M.
Originally conceived as a city-wide statement against hate-based activity, this annual
event reminds Azusa citizens to celebrate diversity and tolerance and to uphold the principles of non-violence taught by Dr. King.
ILLEGAL FIREWORKS FINES
GOING UP IN AZUSA
At the September 16, 2013 Azusa City Council meeting, the council approved an ordinance which
will amend the current city ordinance and increase the amount of administrative fines that the city
can recover for the discharge of illegal fireworks within the City.
The new ordinance will increase the fine for the discharge of illegal fireworks in the City to $1,000
for the first and all subsequent violations (the previous fine was $500.) The administrative fine for
other violations of the fireworks ordinance, including for the improper discharge of safe and sane
fireworks, will remain at $250 for the first violation and $500 for all subsequent violations.

TENGA UNA NAVIDAD FELIZ Y SEGURA
El decorar nuestros hogares y negocios es una larga tradición durante la temporada navideña. Sin embargo, la
Administración de Incendios de Estados Unidos (USFA por sus siglas en inglés), nos recuerda que estas mismas
decoraciones pueden aumentar el riesgo de un incendio. La Asociación Nacional de Protección contra Incendios (NFPA
por sus siglas en inglés) y USFA reportan que cada año ocurrenaproximadamente 240 incendios causados por árboles
navideños, 150 incendios causados por luces navideñas y por otro tipo de luces decorativas.
En total, estos incendios resultaron en 21 muertes y $25.2 millones en daños de propiedad. El seguir unos cuantos
concejos sencillos contra incendios de seguridad puede lograr que las luces eléctricas, velas, y hasta el muy popular
árbol de Navidad no sean la causa de una tragedia.
ÁRBOLES DE NAVIDAD
¿Qué sería una mañana tradicional de Navidad sin un árbol hermosamente decorado? Si su hogar incluye un
árbol natural como parte de sus festividades, escuche los concejos del vendedor – “Mantenga su árbol bien
regado.”
Los árboles de Navidad son la causa de cientos de incendios anualmente. Típicamente, cortos en las
luces eléctricas o las flamas de las velas, encendedores o de serillos, causan que los árboles se
enciendan. Árboles bien regados no son un problema; pero, un árbol seco y no bien cuidado puede
llegar a serlo.
SELECCIÓN DE UN ÁRBOL PARA LOS DÍAS FESTIVOS
Las agujas de los árboles frescos deben estar verdes y difíciles de jalar de las ramas, y las agujas
no deben quebrarse si el árbol ha sido recientemente cortado. El tronco debe sentirse pegajoso al
tocarlo. Los árboles viejos pueden ser identificados al rebotar el tronco contra el piso. Si se caen
muchas agujas, esto significa que probablemente el árbol se ha secado, y es un peligro de
incendio.
CUIDADO PARA SU ÁRBOL
No coloque su árbol cerca a una fuente de calefacción, incluyendo una chimenea o un
conducto de calefacción. El calor secará el árbol, causando que éste se encienda más fácilmente por la
calefacción, flamas o chispas. Tenga cuidado de no dejar caer o de no dar un capirotazo a las cenizas de cigarrillo cerca de un árbol. No coloque
su árbol natural desde muy temprano en la temporada ni lo deje puesto por más de dos semanas. Mantenga la cubeta del árbol llena de agua todo
el tiempo.
ELIMINACIÓN DE SU ÁRBOL
Para su conveniencia, la Ciudad de Azusa y la compañía Athens Services colectará y reciclará árboles de Navidad que sean colocados en el
borde de las aceras residenciales o cerca de un contenedor de basura que esté cubierto. El año pasado, miles de árboles de Azusa fueron
reciclados a través de este programa.
Esta temporada, desde el 26 de diciembre hasta la segunda semana de enero, todos los árboles de Navidad colocados en el borde de las aceras
residenciales o cerca de un contenedor de basura cubierto en un edificio con viviendas multi-familiares, serán recogidos por la compañía Athens
Services. La mayoría de los árboles serán recogidos el día normal de recolección de basura.
Los árboles de Navidad serán demolidos y utilizados como abono o como material de cobertura en los vertederos
locales. Todos los contenedores de plástico, las luces, las cubetas de metal, los adornos, y la gran cantidad de oropel
deben ser quitados antes de tirar el árbol. Se recogerá árboles llenos de escarcha o con material anti-incendios.
Todos los árboles más de 6 pies de altura deberán ser cortados por la mitad.
Si se le pasa la fecha de recolección de árboles navideños, favor de cortar su árbol en
secciones de cuatro pies cada una y de colocarlo en su contenedor(es) de deshechos verdes
de jardinería.

UNIDOS A TRAVÉS DE AZUSA –
“TRIUNFAREMOS”
El domingo, 12 de enero, 2014, la Comisión de Relaciones Humanas de la Ciudad de Azusa será
la anfitriona de la celebración anual Unidos a Través de Azusa que se llevará a cabo en el ante patio
al frente del Ayuntamiento, 213 E. Foothill Blvd., Azusa. El evento comenzará a la 1:00 p.m. hasta
las 3:00 pm.
Originalmente concebida como una declaración a través de la ciudad en contra de actividades
basadas en odio, este evento anual le recuerda a los residentes de Azusa que celebren la diversidad
y la tolerancia y que apoyen los principios de no violencia enseñados por el Dr. King.
MULTA POR DETONAR JUEGOS
PIROTÉCNICOS ILEGALES
INCREMENTARÁ EN AZUSA
En la reunión del Concejo Municipal de Azusa que se realizó el 16 de septiembre, 2013, el Concejo aprobó
una ordenanza la cual enmendará la ordenanza municipal actual y aumentará la cantidad de multas
administrativas que la Ciudad puede cobrar por la detonación de juegos pirotécnicos ilegales en la Ciudad.
La nueva ordenanza aumentará la multa por detonar juegos pirotécnicos ilegales en la Ciudad a $1,000 por
la primera violación y por todas las violaciones subsiguientes a esta (la multa anterior era de $500). La multa
administrativa por otras violaciones de la ordenanza de juegos pirotécnicos, incluyendo la detonación ilegal de
juegos pirotécnicos safe and sane, permanecerá en $250 por la primera violación y $500 por las violaciones
subsiguientes.
