GO AND DO LIKEWISE
Miss Collins, the dean of students at Olympic High School, was past
the point of scolding Matt, though she liked him very much. “Four
detentions in two weeks are too many.”
Still Matt wouldn’t tell. It was only after Miss Collins went on a
morning neighborhood patrol that she found out the real reason for
Matt’s tardiness. Thump, thump, thump, came the wheelchair down
the stairs. It was Matt, steadying Shawnetta as he helped lower her
down the stairs and then push her to the corner bus stop.
“She’s a girl in my parish youth group,” Matt explained to Miss
Collins.
There are many ways to describe Matt’s actions—a random act of
kindness, making a difference one person at a time. Jesus would
understand. When the lawyer correctly identified the good Samaritan
as the one who had treated the injured man with compassion, Jesus
said simply, “Go and do likewise” (Luke 10:37).

JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY ... all those who, on pilgrimage, enter a
DOOR OF MERCY with the proper intention and disposition, and
fulfill the conditions ordinarily attached to a plenary indulgence, can
obtain a JUBILEE indulgence once daily for either themselves or for
the souls of the faithful departed. The usual and prescribed conditions
for gaining a plenary indulgence of temporal punishment due to sins
already forgiven are:

Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Could anyone object to Jesus’ supreme lesson
in mercy, the parable of the Good Samaritan?
Jesus’ devoutly religious audience certainly did!
Scant sympathy for anyone foolish enough to
travel crime-ridden “Jericho Highway” alone.
Much sympathy for priest and Levite, hurrying to
assigned temple ministry, unwilling to risk ritual
impurity through hands-on mercy. No sympathy
for Jesus’ scandalous hero. Samaritans were
religious apostates and political enemies. Jesus
challenges them—and us—to seek God’s
presence not only in liturgical beauty but in a
fellow traveler’s self-inflicted misfortunes. See
God’s presence even in someone outside the law, whose hands-on
mercy springs not from religious obligation but from the heart’s
instinctive goodness. Since Jesus became our “Good Samaritan”
despite our foolishness and sins, who are we to ration our mercy?
“Who is my neighbor?” (Luke 10:29). The next person we see who
needs hands-on mercy! No conditions, no limits, no exceptions.
Especially in this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Jesus commands, “Go and do
likewise” (10:37).

ARREGLOS PARA UN FUNERAL ... sólo unas pocas palabras
acerca del procedimiento ... cuando una persona muere, es habitual que
la familia tenga un velorio, vigilia de uno o dos días en una
funeraria ... entonces el cuerpo es llevado a la iglesia por la familia y
amigos para la misa ... a veces el cuerpo es cremado y luego
enterrado ... por lo general el cuerpo se traslada directamente al
cementerio para el entierro ... todas las familias deben prepararse para
la muerte, el entierro, el terreno en el cementerio ... los sacerdotes
pueden ayudarle pero usted debe ponerse en contacto con la funeraria
para hacer estos arreglos pre-preparados y visitar el cementerio para
ver las distintas tumbas y áreas que están disponibles para usted, así
como los nichos para el entierro de las cenizas ... un funeral puede ser
costoso y por eso una familia debe hacer algunas preparaciones de
antemano ... LOS RESTOS (CENIZAS) son tratados como un cuerpo
y siempre deben ser enterrados NO SE DEBEN QUEDAR EN LA
CASA, ROCIAR EN EL OCÉANO O DIVIDIR ENTRE

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia

Decimoquinto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
¿Podría haber alguien que contradijera la excelente
lección de misericordia en la parábola del Buen
Samaritano? ¡Claro, la audiencia de Jesús que era
religiosamente devota lo hizo! Muy poca simpatía
gozaba alguien lo suficientemente tonto como para
viajar solo por “el camino de Jericó” lleno de
criminales. Bastante simpatía tenía un sacerdote y un levita, quienes a
prisa se dirigían a realizar su trabajo en el templo, y que preferían
evitar hacer una obra de misericordia evitando quedar impuros para la
realización del culto. Nada de simpatía para la persona atenta que
presenta Jesús. Para los judíos los samaritanos eran sus enemigos,
tanto religiosa como políticamente. Jesús los desafía —y también a
nosotros— a buscar la presencia de Dios no solamente en la hermosura
de la liturgia sino en esa persona extraña viajera que cayo en desgracia.
Observa la presencia de Dios aún en alguien que está fuera de la Ley,
quien hace una obra de misericordia que brota más de la bondad
instintiva de su corazón que por sus obligaciones religiosas. Ya que
Jesús se hizo nuestro “Buen Samaritano” pese a nuestras culpas y
necedad, ¿quiénes somos nosotros para medir nuestra misericordia?
¿Quién es mi prójimo? (Lucas 10:29). ¡La próxima persona que
veamos que necesita una obra de misericordia! Sin condiciones, sin
limites, sin excepciones. Especialmente en este Año Jubilar de
misericordia, Jesús ordenó “vete y haz tú lo mismo” (10:37).
Segunda lectura — Todas las cosas fueron creadas mediante y para
Cristo Jesús (Colosenses 1:15-20).
Evangelio — Ser un buen vecino, mostrar amor tratando a otros con
misericordia (Lucas 10:25-37).

Los abuelos, pilares de nuestra fe, cultura y familia
ANDA Y HAZ TÚ LO MISMO
La señorita González, la decana de los estudiantes de la Escuela
Secundaria Olimpo, ya estaba cansada de regañar a Mateo, a pesar de
que le caía muy bien. “Cuatro castigos después de clase en dos
semanas es demasiado".
Sin embargo Mateo permanecía en silencio. Sólo después de que la
señorita González fuera en una ronda matutina por el vecindario
descubrió la verdadera razón de las tardanzas de Mateo. Pataplún, cayó
la silla de ruedas por las escaleras. Era Mateo, sujetando a Dolores
mientras ayudaba a que la bajaran por las escaleras y luego la
empujaba hasta la parada de autobús.
“Es una chica de mi grupo de jóvenes de la parroquia” Mateo le
explicó a la señorita González.
Hay muchas formas de describir las acciones de Mateo –un acto
de bondad al azar, marcar una diferencia en la vida de una persona
a la vez. Jesús entendería. Cuando el abogado identificó
correctamente al buen samaritano como el que había tratado al
hombre herido con compasión, Jesús simplemente dijo: “Anda y
haz tú lo mismo” (Lucas 10:37).
LECTURAS DE HOY
Primera lectura—Escuchen la voz del Señor. Es algo muy cerca de ti,
y está en tu corazón; sólo necesitas observarla (Deuteronomio 30:10-14).
Salmo — Escúchame, Señor, porque eres bueno (Salmo 69 [68]) o Salmo
19 (18).
Este mes de julio celebramos el Día de los Abuelos. Muchos
dicen jocosamente que la función de los abuelos es consentir a los
nietos, ya que no tienen la responsabilidad principal de criarlos,
educarlos y sustentarlos que naturalmente recae en los padres.
Pero la verdad es que el rol de los abuelos va mucho más allá,
especialmente en nuestra cultura hispana.
En nuestros países, los abuelos son frecuentemente el conducto
por donde se transmite la fe. Han sido muchos los niños que por
insistencia de las abuelitas, han aprendido la importancia de vivir
cada domingo la celebración eucarística. Son ellas también las que
en muchas ocasiones han puesto por primera vez el Santo Rosario
en las pequeñas manos de nuestros niños para que comprendan el
poder de esta oración trinitaria, que comienza con proclamación de
nuestra fe y medita en la vida, pasión y muerte de Nuestro Señor
Jesucristo.
Son también los abuelos los que reúnen a nuestros niños para
explicarles las costumbres más arraigadas de nuestra cultura y los
que insisten en continuar celebrándolas en nuestras familias, aunque vivamos lejos de nuestros países de origen. Los abuelos son
los primeros en enseñar los cantos y ritmos tradicionales de nuestra cultura y promueven en nosotros el orgullo se ser hispanos.
Y manteniendo vivas las raíces de nuestra fe y cultura, son los
abuelos los pilares de nuestras familias. Ellos mantienen las bases
de la unión entre padres, hijos, primos, tíos, sobrinos y nietos. Son
los que insisten que nadie se ausente de la cena navideña, la reunión de Pascua, el Día de Acción de Gracias y la bienvenida de
un nuevo año. Valoremos pues el tesoro de creencias, costumbre,
tradiciones, amor y unión familiar que nos regalan día a día los
abuelos y a su ejemplo, pasemos este tesoro a los nuestros de generación en generación.
