UNA LECCIÓN DE GEOGRAFÍA PARA LA FE
Fácilmente pudiéramos distraernos al oír la primera frase del Evangelio de hoy, con
una retahíla de nombres de lugares antiguos que nada significan para nosotros.
Pero para Jesús, entrar en la región de la Decápolis era situarse en territorio de
gentiles, fuera del contexto judío familiar. Jesús está fuertemente convencido de
que el Reino de Dios se proclama en todo lugar, ignorando las arbitrarias fronteras
de geografía, religión, clase o raza, que pudieran impedirlo. A manera de ejemplo,
le quita los obstáculos que el hombre tiene para oír la palabra de Dios puesto que
está sordo, o para proclamarla puesto que tiene una traba en la lengua. Jesús entabla una unidad física con este gentil, al poner los dedos en los oídos del hombre, y
una unión aún más íntima con cuando mezcla saliva de su propia boca con la del
enfermo. Jesús no es un mago cualquiera. Es un hombre de oración, mirando al
cielo mientras gime por el esfuerzo de hacer de su cuerpo un instrumento de salvación, tal como habría de hacerlo en la cruz un día.
¿EN PRIVADO O EN PÚBLICO?
El relato de este milagro en particular ocurre solamente en el Evangelio de San
Marcos, y es poco común la curación de dos enfermedades. Otro detalle que se nos
puede escapar es que Jesús se lleva al hombre a un lugar privado para realizar la
curación. Pudiéramos creer que, siendo extranjero en un lugar desconocido, Jesús
hubiera querido hacer una demostración pública de su poder. Pero, de acuerdo con
lo que ocurre antes del milagro, la manifestación del Reino de Dios (proclamado en
Isaías) tiene lugar en privado, tal como las explicaciones de las parábolas a sus discípulos. Puede ser que también para nosotros, las cosas que hacemos día a día en
testimonio del Evangelio ocurran en privado, con pocas personas a nuestro alrededor. Entonces pudiéramos creer que, como no curamos a los enfermos milagrosamente, o no tenemos un foro público a nuestro alcance, no estamos llamados a
"hacerlo todo bien" (Marcos 7:37) como discípulos. Hoy Jesús nos demuestra lo
contrario, y así aprendemos que el Reino de Dios, aún cuando se realiza en privado,
no puede menos que abrirse camino en nuestro mundo.
A GEOGRAPY LESSON FOR FAITH
It might be easy to zone out while listening to the first sentence of today's Gospel as one
more list of ancient place names that don't mean anything to us. But for Jesus to go into the
district of the Decapolis puts him into Gentile territory, outside of his familiar Jewish context. PRIVATE OR PUBLIC?
This particular miracle story is unique to Mark's Gospel, and is unusual in its healing of two
ailments. Another detail we might overlook is that Jesus takes the man off in private to perform the healing. We might think that, especially as a foreigner in an unfriendly place, Jesus
might want to make a public display of his power. But, consistent with what precedes the
miracle, his manifestation of the reign of God (described in Isaiah) takes place in private, as
have his explanations of parables to his disciples. Chances are, for most of us the day-to-day
things we do in witness to the gospel happen in private, with only a few people around.
Some of us might think that, since we don't heal the sick miraculously or don't have a large
public forum at our disposal, we are not called upon to do "all things well" (Mark 7:37) as
disciples. Today Jesus shows us differently, and we learn that the reign of God, even when it
