San Joaquín y Santa Ana
Padres de la Virgen Maria
Joaquín (Yahvé prepara) fue el padre
de la Virgen María, madre de Dios.
Según San Pedro Damián, deberíamos
tener por curiosidad censurable e
innecesaria el inquirir sobre cuestiones
que los evangelistas no tuvieron a bien
relatar, y, en particular, acerca de los padres de la Virgen.
Con todo, la tradición, basándose en testimonios antiquísimos y
muy tempranamente, saludó a los santos esposos Joaquín y Ana
como padre y madre de la Madre de Dios.
Ciertamente, esta tradición parece tener su fundamento último en
el llamado Protoevangelio de Santiago, en el Evangelio de la
Natividad de Santa María y el Pseudomateo o Libro de la Natividad
de Santa María la Virgen y de la infancia del Salvador; este origen
es normal que levantara sospechas bastante fundadas.
No debería olvidarse, sin embargo, que el carácter apócrifo de tales
escritos, es decir, su exclusión del canon y su falta de autenticidad
no conlleva el prescindir totalmente de sus aportaciones.
En efecto, a la par que hechos poco fiables y legendarios, estas
obras contienen datos históricos tomados de tradiciones o
documentos fidedignos; y aunque no es fácil separar el grano de la
paja, sería poco prudente y acrítico rechazar el conjunto
indiscrimadamente.
Algunos comentaristas, que opinan que la genealogía aportada por
San Lucas es la de la Virgen, hallan la mención de Joaquín en Helí
(Lucas, 3, 23; Eliachim, es decir, Jeho-achim), y explican que José se
había convertido a los ojos de la ley, a fuer de su matrimonio, en el
hijo de Joaquín. Que esa sea el propósito y la intención del
evangelista es más que dudoso, lo mismo que la identificación
propuesta entre los dos nombres Helí y Joaquín.
Tampoco se puede afirmar con certeza, a pesar de la autoridad de
los Bollandistas, que Joaquín fuera hijo de Helí y hermano de José;
ni tampoco, como en ocasiones se dice a partir de fuentes de muy
dudoso valor, que era propietario de innumerables cabezas de
ganado y vastos rebaños.
Más interesantes son las bellas líneas en las que el Evangelio de
Santiago describe, cómo, en su edad provecta, Joaquín y Ana
hallaron respuesta a sus oraciones en favor de tener descendencia.
Es tradición que los padres de Santa María, que aparentemente
vivieron primero en Galilea, se instalaron después en Jerusalén;
donde nació y creció Nuestra Señora; allí también murieron y
fueron enterrados.
Una iglesia, conocida en distintas épocas como Santa María, Santa
María ubi nata est, Santa María in Probática, Sagrada Probática y
Santa Ana fue edificada en el siglo IV, posiblemente por Santa
Elena, en el lugar de la casa de San Joaquín y Santa Ana, y sus
tumbas fueron allí veneradas hasta finales del siglo IX, en que fue
convertida en una escuela musulmana.
La cripta que contenía en otro tiempo las sagradas tumbas fue
redescubierta en 1889. San Joaquín fue honrado muy pronto por
los griegos, que celebran su fiesta al día siguiente de la de la
Natividad de Ntra. Señora. Los latinos tardaron en incluirlo en su
calendario, donde le correspondió unas veces el 16 de septiembre
y otras el 9 de diciembre.
Asociado por Julio II [el de la capilla Sixtina] al 20 de marzo, la
solemnidad fue suprimida unos cinco años después, restaurada por
Gregorio XV (1622), fijada por Clemente XII (1738) en el domingo
posterior a la Asunción, y fue finalmente León XIII [el de la Rerum
Novarum] quien, el 1 de agosto de 1879, dignificó la fiesta de estos
esposos que se celebró por separado hasta la última reforma
litúrgica.
Ana (del hebreo Hannah, gracia) es el nombre que la tradición ha
señalado para la madre de la Virgen. Las fuentes son las mismas
que en el caso de San Joaquín. Aunque la versión más antigua de
estas fuentes apócrifas se remonta al año 150 d.C., difícilmente
podemos admitir como fuera de toda duda sus variopintas
afirmaciones con fundamento en su sola autoridad.
En Oriente, el Protoevangelio gozó de gran autoridad y de él se
leían pasajes en las fiestas marianas entre los griegos, los coptos y
los árabes. En Occidente, sin embargo, como ya te adelanté con
San Joaquín, fue rechazado por los Padres de la Iglesia hasta que su
contenido fue incorporado por San Jacobo de Vorágine a su
Leyenda Áurea en el siglo XIII.
A partir de entonces, la historia de Santa Ana se divulgó en
Occidente y tuvo un considerable desarrollo, hasta que Santa Ana
llegó a convertirse en uno de los santos más populares también
para los cristianos de rito latino.
El Protoevangelio aporta la siguiente relación: En Nazaret vivía una
pareja rica y piadosa, Joaquín y Ana. No tenían hijos. Cuando con
ocasión de cierto día festivo Joaquín se presentó a ofrecer un
sacrificio en el templo, fue arrojado de él por un tal Rubén, porque
los varones sin descendencia eran indignos de ser admitidos.
Joaquín entonces, transido de dolor, no regresó a su casa, sino que
se dirigió a las montañas para manifestar su sentimiento a Dios en
soledad. También Ana, puesta ya al tanto de la prolongada
ausencia de su marido, dirigió lastimeras súplicas a Dios para que le
levantara la maldición de la esterilidad, prometiendo dedicar el hijo
a su servicio.
Sus plegarias fueron oídas; un ángel se presentó ante Ana y le dijo:
"Ana, el Señor ha visto tus lágrimas; concebirás y darás a luz, y el
fruto de tu seno será bendecido por todo el mundo". El ángel hizo

la misma promesa a Joaquín, que volvió al lado de su esposa. Ana
dio a luz una hija, a la que llamó Miriam.
Dado que esta narración parece reproducir el relato bíblico de la
concepción del profeta Samuel, cuya madre también se llamaba
Hannah, la sombra de la duda se proyecta hasta en el nombre de la
madre de María.
El célebre Padre John de Eck de Ingolstadt, en un sermón dedicado
a Santa Ana (pronunciado en París en 1579), aparenta conocer
hasta los nombres de los padres de Santa Ana. Los llama Estolano
(Stollanus) y Emerencia (Emerentia).
Afirma que la santa nació después de que Estolano y Emerencia
pasaran veinte años sin descendencia; que San Joaquín murió poco
después de la presentación de María en el templo; que Santa Ana
casó después con Cleofás, del cual tuvo a María de Cleofás; la
mujer de Alfeo y madre de los apóstoles Santiago el Menor, Simón
y Judas Tadeo, así como de José el Justo.
Después de la muerte de Cleofás, se dijo que casó con Salomas, de
quien trajo al mundo a María Salomé (la mujer de Zebedeo y
madre de los apóstoles Juan y Santiago el Mayor).
La misma leyenda espuria se halla en los textos de Gerson y en los
de muchos otros. Allí surgió en el siglo XVI una animada
controversia sobre los matrimonios de Santa Ana, en la que
Baronio y Belarmino defendieron su monogamia.
En Oriente, al culto a Santa Ana se le puede seguir la pista hasta el
siglo IV. Justiniano I hizo que se le dedicara una iglesia. El canon del
oficio griego de Santa Ana fue compuesto por San Teófanes, pero
partes aún más antiguas del oficio son atribuidas a Anatolio de
Bizancio.
Su fiesta se celebra en Oriente el 25 de julio, que podría ser el día
de la dedicación de su
primera iglesia en Constantinopla o el aniversario de la llegada de
sus supuestas reliquias a esta ciudad (710).
Aparece ya en el más antiguo documento litúrgico de la Iglesia
Griega, el Calendario de
Constantinopla (primera mitad del siglo VIII). Los griegos conservan
una fiesta común de San Joaquín y Santa Ana el 9 de septiembre.
En la Iglesia Latina, Santa Ana no fue venerada, salvo, quizás, en el
sur de Francia, antes del siglo XIII. Su imagen, pintada en el siglo
VIII y hallada más tarde en la Iglesia de Santa María la Antigua de
Roma, acusa la influencia bizantina.
Su fiesta, bajo la influencia de la Leyenda Áurea, se puede ya
rastrear (26 de julio) en el siglo XIII, en Douai. Fue introducida en
Inglaterra por Urbano VI el 21 de noviembre de 1378, y a partir de
entonces se extendió a toda la Iglesia occidental. Pasó a la Iglesia
Latina universal en 1584.
Santa Ana es la patrona de Bretaña. Su imagen milagrosa (fiesta, 7
de marzo) es venerada en Notre Dame d´Auray, en la diócesis de
Vannes.
También en Canadá -donde es la patrona principal de la provincia
de Québec- el santuario de Santa Ana de Beaupré es muy famoso.
Santa Ana es patrona de las mujeres trabajadoras; se la representa
con la Virgen María en su regazo, que también lleva en brazos al
Niño Jesús. Es además la patrona de los mineros, que comparan a
Cristo con el oro y con la plata a María.

St. Joachim and St. Anne
St. Anne and St. Joachim are the parents of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. They spent their lives worshiping God and doing good. They
had one great sorrow, however: God had not sent them any
children. For years and years, Anne had begged the Lord to give her
a child. She promised to consecrate the baby to him. When she was
already old, God answered her prayer in a far better way than she
could ever have dreamed. The child born to St. Joachim and St.
Anne was the Immaculate Virgin Mary. This holiest of all women
was to become the Mother of God. Anne took tender care of little
Mary for a few years. Then she gave her to the service of God, as
she had promised she would.
Mary went to live in the holy Temple of Jerusalem. St. Joachim and
St. Anne continued their lives of prayer until God called them home
to heaven. Christians have always been especially devoted to St.
Anne. Many beautiful churches have been built in her honor.
Perhaps one of the most famous is the Shrine of St. Anne de
Beaupre in Canada. Great crowds go there all year around to ask St.
Anne's help in their sufferings.

indoctrinate them? So, this is interesting.
And it is something I am hearing more
and more. The first question I ask in
response is very simple: Do you believe that Jesus is God or not?
Things really can’t get more basic. If I do not believe that Jesus is
God, then I believe that Christianity is entirely based on something
untrue. At best, it is a mistake. At worst, it is a lie. If a person didn’t
believe in Christ, but presented Catholicism as an option, they
would essentially be lying to their children. To paraphrase C.S.
Lewis, there is only one reason to teach your children anything:
because it is true. A parent who considers not teaching their
children that Jesus is God and the Savior of the world does not
believe that Jesus is God and the Savior of the world. I do not mean
that as a condemnation, simply as an observation.
To be a disciple of Jesus is to know that you also have a mission.
“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you” (Matt. 28:19-20). In fact,
this is the test of whether or not I am really a disciple of Jesus: do I
do my utmost to spread the Gospel? In 1968, Pope Paul VI wrote
(in one of my favorite encyclicals of all time) that “it is unthinkable
that a person should accept the Word and give himself to the
kingdom without becoming a person who bears witness to it and
proclaims it in his turn” (Evangelii Nuntiandi).
Here’s the deal. Your life
has a purpose and you
have a mission in Jesus: to
help others into the new
life you have received from
Jesus. And if you have been
called to the vocation of
marriage and the family,
your mission field begins in
your home. To help the people living under your roof realize that
their lives are not meaningless; that their lives are bigger than they
seem. That there is a God who loves them. Your mission is to them
first of all…and then to everyone else you come in contact with.
But they are first. Miss that, and you miss the very reason why you
even exist.
But the question remains: is it fair to indoctrinate these helpless
children? Well, the very root of the word “indoctrinate” simply
means “to teach” (“doctrine” means “teaching”). Is it fair to teach
your children anything? Of course it is…as long as it is true. We
teach our children that sharing is good, bullying is bad, and the
earth is a sphere. We don’t say, “I
won’t send my child to school until he
decides for himself.”
I think what this questioner fears is
“brainwashing”. I fear that too. But
what is brainwashing? Its purpose is to
short-circuit the mental process of
reasoning. Its apparent goal is blind,
unthinking belief and obedience. But
one of the main principles of the
Catholic Faith is using one’s intellect to
its full extent.
Help your child learn how to think critically. This is not rooting
them in skepticism, but giving them the tools to ask intelligent
questions and be able to look for good answers. They are living in
hostile territory. If you think that you are going to strike a truce
with the culture and simply allow for the free frolicking of your
children’s minds in the field of the world, you are gravely mistaken.
The world has not given up on trying to shape your children in the
least. The average teen spends 72 hours per week using some kind
of media. And what are the messages communicated through our
mass media? Talk about indoctrination! Think about advertising.
Advertisements are specifically designed to short-circuit the mental
process of reasoning.
This is why many of us spent money we didn’t have last month on
things our loved ones didn’t need. In fact, in my work with youth
and college-aged students, I have more often found a “blind
disbelief” than I have ever found “blind belief”. Many have an
automatic, unthinking skepticism; a refusal to even consider faith
in Christ as something reasonable. You are right.
Brainwashing is bad. This is why we have to steep our children in
Catholicism. It, and it alone, is the antidote for the indoctrination
toward skepticism our culture presents to us.
