The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. Luke 2:47 Dear Friends;
“Linda lies on the garage floor totally absorbed experimenting, trying to burn a leaf with the sun’s rays shining
through glass. She is exploring reality, testing how it works, caught up in its mystery. Her total absorption
suggests something of a child’s capacity: to be captivated by reality, to wonder at its mysterious workings, to
want to get involved with its creative process.
Growing older, we lose that childlike openness and wonder. Why do we live only on the surface of things
hurried, occupied, dulled to the marvels of the world, no longer entranced by the power of sunrays and glass to
spark a dead leaf?” –A Sense of Wonder, James Evans McReynolds
Raising children has never been easy in any culture, time or place. Too often we think of our children as blank
slates or empty computer hard drives. We think that all we have to do is program them to be what we want.
Only to discover that they already come equipped with their own personalities, talents and insights. They often
challenge us with exacting questions. These questions can unmask our own little hypocrisies and ignorance. At
times our children resist our parental programing as they struggle to express their true self.
It is difficult for parents to strike a balance in maintaining appropriate boundaries for their child while still
giving her/him enough freedom to grow to be who God made her/him to be. Sometimes all parents can do is to
ponder the mystery of their children. They must hope and pray that their child will continue to grow in wisdom,
maturity, and favor among human beings and God.
We see this same kind of struggle in the story of the Holy Family. The adolescent Jesus must make the
transition from childhood. In his culture that meant cutting attachment to his mother and the world of women
and children. He must now look to Joseph to help him move into the world of adult men and work. His time in
the Temple with the elders and teachers reveals an intelligent and insightful youth. The Gospel of Luke tells us
that Jesus “grew in wisdom and understanding.” This may have been a moment when he begins to sense his life
mission and his relationship with God.
This event reveals that Jesus is not, as is expected in this culture, going to follow in his father Joseph’s trade.
This will be a continuing source of scandal throughout the gospels, “Isn’t this the carpenter’s son?” In other
words, “who does he think he is, trying to be better than his given social status?” “From where does he get all
this wisdom?” The answer will unfold with the Gospel. Jesus is guided by the Spirit of God throughout his life.
He never strayed from his youthful inner vision of God as his true Father.
Each of us has our own unique God-given personalities, gifts and talents. Too often we have allowed ourselves
to be educated out of the wonder and mystery of life. We have killed our joyful, youthful vision in an attempt to
have answers and security. Maybe God decided to come as a child to show us that the meaning of life is not
found in controlling the world but in beholding the world with wonder and mystery.

misterio. Su total concentración sugiere algo de la capacidad de la niña: de ser cautivada por la realidad, de asombrarse de
su misterio, de querer envolverse en su proceso creativo.
Al hacernos mas grandes, perdemos esa franqueza infantil y de maravilla. ¿Por qué vivimos sólo en la superficie de las
cosas apurados, ocupados, indiferentes a las maravillas del mundo, sin sentirnos encantados por el poder de rayos de sol y

Criar hijos nunca ha sido fácil en cualquier cultura, época o lugar. Demasiado a menudo pensamos en nuestros hijos como
pizarrones en blanco o discos vacíos de computadora. Pensamos que todo lo que tenemos que hacer es programarlos para
ser lo que queremos. Sólo para descubrir que ellos ya cuentan con sus propias personalidades, talentos y conocimientos. A
menudo nos desafían con preguntas difíciles. Estas preguntas pueden desenmascarar nuestras propias hipocresías e
ignorancia. A veces nuestros hijos resisten nuestra programación parental mientras luchan para expresar su verdadero ser.
Es difícil para los padres lograr un equilibrio en el mantenimiento de límites apropiados para su niño y al mismo tiempo
darles la libertad suficiente de crecer para ser lo que Dios les hizo ser. A veces, lo único que los padres pueden hacer es
reflexionar sobre el misterio de sus hijos. Deben esperar y orar que su hijo continuará creciendo en sabiduría, madurez y
en favor entre los seres humanos y Dios.
Vemos este mismo tipo de lucha en la historia de la Sagrada Familia. El adolescente Jesús debe hacer la transición desde
la infancia. En su cultura eso significaba cortas los lazos con su madre y el mundo de las mujeres y los niños. Ahora él
debe mirar a José para ayudarle a moverse en el mundo de los hombres adultos y de trabajo. Su tiempo en el templo con
los ancianos y maestros revela una juventud inteligente y perspicaz. El Evangelio de Lucas nos dice que Jesús "crecía en
sabiduría y entendimiento". Esto puede haber sido un momento cuando comenzaba a sentir su misión de vida y su relación
con Dios.
Este acontecimiento revela que Jesús no seguiría los pasos del trabajo de José domo era esperado en aquella cultura. Esto
será una continua fuente de escándalo a lo largo de los evangelios, "¿no es este el hijo del carpintero?" En otras palabras,
"quien se cree que es, tratando de ser mejor del estatus social que se le dio?" "De donde obtiene toda esta sabiduría?" La
respuesta se desarrollará con el Evangelio. Jesús es guiado por el espíritu de Dios a lo largo de su vida. Jamás se desvió de
su visión interior joven de Dios como su verdadero padre.
Cada uno de nosotros tenemos nuestras propias personalidades únicas que Dios nos da, dones y talentos. Demasiado a
menudo nos hemos dejado ser educados fuera del asombro y el misterio de la vida. Hemos matado nuestra visión alegre y
juvenil en un intento de tener respuestas y seguridad. Tal vez Dios decidió venir como un niño que nos muestra que el
significado de la vida no se encuentra en el control del mundo pero en contemplar al mundo con asombro y misterio.
