In this passage the Bible speaks to us of the sacrament of the Eucharist. This is not so much an elaboration of a theological concept but rather a message to us from the loving heart of Jesus. He speaks to us directly and reveals to Pastor Pastor’’ss Notes Notes us that He Himself is the true Bread from Heaven which can satiate our hungers and quench our thirst. He is the Bread of life. “Jesus asks His disciples : Do you also want to go away? And Simon Peter responds: Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We believe and know that You are the Messiah.” Bread is a word full of tremendous significance. It is a symbol of the Before God's Word, one must always make a choice: either accept it or reject it. As the leader of Israel, Joshua spoke to his people and demanded that they decide: either to serve the Lord or to follow strange gods. And the people chose to serve the Lord, who was always with them. (Joshua 24:1-19) Today, we are challenged to say, like Peter: "Where better shall we go?" Many times, we involve ourselves in too many foolish things which rob us of our peace and energy. And we forget God, who should be our first priority. He has the words which give us life and fill us with hope and joy. Today, as we participate in the Mass here at St. Agnes, we already have made a decision, among our other options. We realize that no one or nothing can give what Jesus offers. He nourishes us with His Body and Blood. nourishment of human life. Therefore Jesus teaches us to ask for our daily bread. – Matt 6:11. In the word bread is included the bread of the table, of the home, of the family, of love and marriage, of work, health, education and social relations. In other words, all food necessary for life are expressed in the word “bread.” And among all these “breads” is the bread of faith, of the spirit, which helps us maintain a relationship of union, of love, and of communion with Jesus. He speaks to us and responds with His Word and His Person to our quests, our hungers and our emptiness. Therefore, He will repeat the words of the Book of Deuteronomy 8:3… “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” And the Divine Word also becomes bread and nourishment. I am referring to Jesus Christ, God incarnate, who took upon Himself our human condition. The Gospel of John 1:14 describes it: “And the Word became flesh.” That is to say, He made Himself visible and tangible. Therefore on these Sundays, Jesus repeatedly tells us: “The bread that I will give you is My flesh for the life of the world. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has life eternal”. John 6:51-54. And here the word flesh refers to God incarnate, Christ Himself in His total human reality. Therefore, quoting the phrase “we are what we eat”, let us reflect that by consuming Jesus in the Eucharist we are day by day being transformed into the body of Christ, disposed to love and self-giving. Now we can understand that the Mass is the celebration of the fact that Christ, risen and alive, is truly present among us. Our eyes do not see Him, but the heart is aware of Him. The Eucharist and participation in the Mass are much more than merely fulfilling an obligation, which for some is, disgracefully, quite annoying and of little importance. To receive Jesus in Communion is much more than a simple devotion or a magical and routine rite. It is, above all, a need and a commitment. I need to nourish my spirit and my person with the presence, the Word, and the food which God offers me on His table. And this supposes a daily commitment of being more like Jesus who nourishes me. Let us never forget that “one is what one eats.”
