THE LAST SUPPER

My brothers and sisters in Christ, in order to prepare ourselves to commemorate the glorious
Resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ on Easter Day, today, we are celebrating Holy Thursday.
This Feast solemnly commemorates the institution of the Holy Eucharist. During the history of
the Holy Catholic Church, this special Feast has been associated with the baptism of new
converts, the reconciliation of penitents, the consecration of the holy oils, the washing of the feet
and the commemoration of the Blessed Eucharist. As such, this Feast has received many different
names that all represent Holy Thursday.
Holy Thursday is the night on which our Lord Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His
disciples. What went through the mind of the disciples on that night, we will never know. We can
only imagine. What we do know is that Jesus knew that His hour had come to depart from the
world and to go to the Father. While Jesus had been preparing His disciples for some time,
hinting to them that He was about to be betrayed and crucified, the disciples did not appear
perceive what Jesus was telling them.
After all, the disciples were human beings just like all of us. Most likely, they were more
impressed with the miracles of Jesus, His infinite wisdom as a Teacher and Rabbi, and His
endless knowledge of the mysteries of God. While some of the disciples affirmed that Jesus was
the Son of God and the Messiah, their actions at the time of the arrest of Jesus clearly tell us that
they were very weak in human nature.
During today's First Reading from the Book of Exodus, [Exo. 12:1-8, 11-14] God the Father
alluded to Moses and His people that the day of the New Covenant of grace was coming.
In that reading, God the Father gave at least eight different pictures of things to come. In the
institution of the Passover to commemorate the day when His people were freed from slavery,
God indicated that that month would mark for the people the beginning of months. For new
converts to the Catholic Church who are receiving the Sacrament of Baptism during the Easter
season, this month marks for them the beginning of the liturgical year that is to follow.
God the Father spoke of taking a lamb without blemish. As we know, Jesus was the Lamb of God
without defect or blemish. [Jn. 1:29; 1 Pet. 1:19] "For our sake God made Jesus to be sin who
knew no sin, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God." [2 Cor. 5:21]

Mis hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, a fin de prepararnos para conmemorar la gloriosa
resurrección de nuestro Señor Jesucristo el día de Pascua, hoy, estamos celebrando el Jueves
Santo. Esta fiesta solemne conmemora la institución de la Sagrada Eucaristía. Durante la historia
de la Santa Iglesia Católica, esta fiesta especial, se ha asociado con el bautismo de los nuevos
conversos, la reconciliación de los penitentes, la consagración de los santos óleos, el lavatorio de
los pies y la conmemoración de la Sagrada Eucaristía. Como tal, esta fiesta ha recibido muchos
nombres diferentes que representan todo el Jueves Santo.
Jueves Santo es la noche en que nuestro Señor Jesús celebró la Última Cena con sus discípulos.
¿Qué pasó por la mente de los discípulos de esa noche, nunca lo sabremos. Sólo podemos
imaginar. Lo que sí sabemos es que Jesús sabía que su hora había llegado a apartarse del mundo
para ir al Padre. Mientras Jesús estaba preparando a sus discípulos durante algún tiempo,
haciendo alusión al punto de ser traicionado y crucificado, los discípulos no parecen percibir lo
que Jesús les estaba diciendo.
Después de todo, los discípulos eran seres humanos igual que todos nosotros. Lo más probable es
que estaban más impresionados con los milagros de Jesús, su infinita sabiduría como un maestro
y rabino, y su conocimiento sin fin de los misterios de Dios. Aunque algunos de los discípulos
afirmó que Jesús era el Hijo de Dios y el Mesías, sus acciones en el momento de la detención de
Jesús claramente nos dicen que eran muy débiles en la naturaleza humana.
Durante la primera lectura de hoy del libro del Éxodo, [ Exo. 12:1-8, 11-14] Dios Padre se alude a
Moisés y su pueblo que el día de la Nueva Alianza de la gracia que se avecinaba.
En esa lectura, Dios el Padre dio al menos ocho diferentes imágenes de lo que vendrá. En la
institución de la Pascua para conmemorar el día en que su pueblo se liberó de la esclavitud, Dios
indicó que ese mes se marcará para el pueblo el comienzo de mes. Para los nuevos conversos a la
Iglesia Católica que están recibiendo el sacramento del bautismo durante la temporada de Semana
Santa, este mes marcas para ellos el comienzo del año litúrgico que va a seguir.
Dios el Padre habló de tomar un cordero sin mancha. Como sabemos, Jesús es el Cordero
de Dios sin defecto o imperfección. [Jn. 1:29; 1 Ped. 1:19] "y por nuestra causa que Dios
hizo que Jesús es el pecado que no conoció pecado, para que en Él nosotros fuésemos
hechos justicia de Dios." [2 Cor. 5:21]
