Richard Huneger Parish Beautification Project Report #4: This weekend, July 24, leaders from our Vietnamese Community are in Portland at Our Lady of Lavang Parish at the SE Asian Vicariate, NE 54th and Alameda, just across the street from St Rose of Lima Church, where I was pastor from 1994-2006. Our Lady of Lavang, by the way, has for the last two years wrested "first place" from St Joseph as the "largest" parish in the Archdiocese, in terms of the November annual in-pew census: we are both around 4,500 attendees per weekend, but they are slightly ahead of us. Our representatives, led by Robert Do, Chair of the Vietnamese Community, and Paul Nguyen, its Director of Religious Education, as well as Emeritus Chair Vinh Johnson, are making presentations at the Masses and hoping to get about 1,000 families each to Adopt-a-Pipe as a tribute from the wider archdiocesan Vietnamese Community to Archbishop Vlazny; they are also hoping to receive sponsorship donations to our pipe organ project from about 100 Vietnamese businesses. The gifts they receive will add to the $95,000 we now have in our fund (up $45,000 from two months ago), plus, we have a promised gift of $50,000 when we sign the contract with Bond Organ to do the pipe organ restoration work. So we are making progress, but at the moment are not ready to sign the contract for work to be done, given cash flow requirements. The parish Hispanic Community held its amazing scapular and carwash event Saturday, July 16, and took up second collections July 10 and do so again this weekend July 24, toward their goal of $30,000 toward painting of the church, parish center, and school. Thanks to the many Hispanic men in the construction trades, a number of whom are members of the Knights of Columbus, the Knights with them will be painting the school for the cost of paint, after the hallway asbestos removal and concrete polishing is complete (upstairs and downstairs). What a gift to our parish! (As of this writing, July 15, due to early press deadlines, we cannot report on the Our Lady of Mt Carmel festivities, Masses, and carwash project.) As you read this, the Fresco Project contract signing may have already been completed with archdiocesan review and approval, and soon, we will be signing the contract for the interior painting of the church. Conrad Schmitt Studios of New Berlin, Wisconsin, has been working with the parish over the last few years, and this last eight months, in greater detail, toward finalizing things. The plasterpaint image, surrounding the crucifix-marble on the back wall of the sanctuary, will show Joseph responding to his vocation to take Mary as his spouse, rising from sleep to obey the angelic vision recorded in Matthew 1. Parker Smith of McMinnville, who is painting the gym, and doing the hallway work in the school, will also be painting the church interior around November. A small committee led by Teri Martinez, Elise Lynch, and Doug Schneider, are planning a fundraising event for the fresco project in August. By the time you read this, the church bathroom remodeling work might have begun (a few weeks ago they were cleaned out and had asbestos removed); and the gym bathroom remodeling work might also be underway. We're still trying to nail down the kitchen remodel in the Parish Center, but things are starting to fall into place; with that will come the stage remodel in the gym, returning it to use for drama, concerts, and so on. Parishioners will be able to enjoy working in the kitchen a lot more once the modifications have been put in place. We are almost certain about which will be the new chairs that we are purchasing for the Parish Center, as those now in the PC are moved to the Gym. We need to remember that many of the projects being described came from special gifts in preparation for Archbishop Vlazny's 80th Birthday Mass here coming February 11. One for $75,000 for Gym and Parish Center, another for $50,000 to be used as needed, another for $20,000, and another for $10,000, as well as the $7,000 gift from the Knights of Columbus for new appliances in the kitchen. In addition we have had energetic fundraising from the Filipino Community for the Adopt-a-Pipe project, along with our Vietnamese Community, and the above-mentioned activity of our Hispanic Community. The annual Prison Ministry Grant of $30,000, which was being used to pay off the Boiler/Heating Project last year, will be used this year, for these special projects. Many, of course, have contributed to the Adopt-a-Pipe project. Our thanks to everyone whose generosity is making all the upgrades to the facilities and worship at St Joseph a reality. Please pray for the success of pending outreach to some potential major donors. "Mother Angelica, pray for us!" St. Joseph Parish Religious Education St. Joseph Catholic School: Philosophy Saint Joseph Catholic School accomplishes its mission by assisting parents in their responsibility to guide their children towards eternal happiness with God in heaven. The school strives for solidarity with parents in this regard, and to be a trustworthy and reliable resource for them and their children. Students are taught Christian virtues and are expected to be responsible citizens. We recognize the varied talents of our students and emphasize the importance of learning to share those talents with others. We strive to build a vibrant faith community among our students, staff, and parents. A rich sacramental life is available for students, and parents are always welcome to participate with their children. We pray in the church each morning as an entire school with our priests. We have Mass weekly, with readings and songs done by students. Older students also attend the parish Mass at noon every Friday. Grades 3-6 visit the Adoration Chapel regularly. Preparation for First Communion is part of the curriculum in Grade 2. All students learn the prayers and gestures of our Faith. There are regular confessions available for students, as well as Stations of the Cross and recitation of the Rosary at the appropriate seasons. Training is offered for older student to become altar servers, and priests actively participate in educating the students on the richness of the Liturgy and Catholic culture. Our focus is to grow the ability of our students to think, reason, and communicate well in the pursuit of truth. This starts with a strong classical foundation in reading, writing, and mathematics. The academic curriculum meets or exceeds standards established by the Archdiocese, the State of Oregon, as well as national standards in each subject and each grade. We stress deep factual knowledge of the essentials of each subject, and we teach with a combination of Christian charity and high expectations. We intend for each student to reach their fullest potential and to equip them for the next levels of their education. The core curriculum is supplemented with classes and activities in Art, Media, Music, Spanish, Latin, and Physical Education, which vary by grade level. The school atmosphere is safe and nurturing, with an emphasis on the importance of being respectful to others, providing service to others, and developing self-discipline. We believe each child is a unique gift, who requires loving guidance, encouragement, and individual attention in all the areas of life. We look to our parents to participate in the life of the school to ensure it is a continuation of family life, rather than an institution. Please call the school for enrollment information. 503-581-2147 Have you tried enriching your Catholic faith through our parish’s free online access to videos, ebooks, and audios for all Parishioners!
