REDEFINING KINGSHIP
This last Sunday of the Church’s liturgical year is dedicated to Christ, our King. In the first reading, from the
second book of Samuel, we meet Jesus’ ancestor David,
the greatest king of Israel. This passage describes
a glorious monarch who is acclaimed by all the
tribes of Israel. He is called both a “shepherd” and
a “commander.” The second reading, from Paul’s
Letter to the Colossians, also contains glorious language, describing Christ as “the firstborn of all
creation.” Only at the end of this passage do we
hear a hint of the paradox we will meet in today’s Gospel:
Christ the King makes “peace by the blood of his cross.”
In Luke’s Gospel, we confront the stark reality of
Christ’s kingship. Here is our king, hanging on a cross,
jeered, taunted, berated by a common criminal. This king
looks defeated and powerless. Yet he demonstrates how
absolute his power is. His death is truly for the salvation
of all, one person at a time, starting with the “Good
Thief,” and continuing through the ages to us today.

NUEVA DEFINICIÓN DEL REINO
Este último domingo del año litúrgico de la Iglesia está
dedicado a Cristo Rey. En la primera lectura tomada del segundo libro de Samuel, encontramos al antepasado de Jesús,
David, el rey más grande de Israel. Este pasaje describe a un glorioso monarca aclamado por todas las
tribus de Israel. Es llamado “pastor” y “jefe”. La segunda lectura, de la carta de Pablo a los Colosenses,
también contiene un glorioso lenguaje para describir a
Cristo como “el primogénito de toda la creación”. Solamente al final de este pasaje oímos un indicio de la
paradoja que encontraremos en el Evangelio de hoy. Cristo
Rey establece la paz “por su sangre derramada en la cruz”.
En el Evangelio de Lucas, confrontamos la escueta realidad del reinado de Cristo. Aquí está nuestro rey, colgado de
una cruz, mofado, escarnecido, insultado por un común criminal. Este rey parece vencido e impotente. Sin embargo
demuestra que absoluto es su poder. Su muerte es realmente por la salvación de todos, una persona a la vez, comenzando con el “buen ladrón”, y continuando por todas las edades hasta nosotros hoy.

Our Marian Plaza is nearing completion and the
engraving process is underway. There are still
opportunities for sponsorships. Please prayerfully

The dedication is set for Sunday, 8 December. After the 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM Masses that
Sunday, all will be invited to process from the Mass to the
Plaza. At the plaza, there will be a simple ceremony of blessing
and a singing of the hymn Immaculate Mary. To accommodate
the dedication ceremony, the parking spaces in front of the
plaza area will be blocked off.

Hughes Assembly at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish will
provide coats for 24 children. We are asking parishioners
