A Sunday Reflection

The Gospel today presents Christ moving around towns and places
in Palestine announcing the arrival of the kingdom of God. One day
he selected seventy two disciples and sent them ahead of himself,
two by two. Why two by two instead of individually? For the simple
reason that when two people work together for the kingdom of
God, they are witnesses of love and unity, and this is, in and of itself,
preaching. The Church is a community and it must reflect this
communal character in her daily living.

The first thing those who are sent must do on entering a house is to
announce peace: “Peace to this house!” This is not a merely
courteous greeting; rather, it announces the presence of a person
who carries peace in his heart, and of whom it can be said: “blessed
are they who work for peace, for they shall be called children of
God.”

En el evangelio del día de hoy se nos presenta a Cristo recorriendo
pueblos y lugares de Palestina anunciando la llegada del reino de Dios. Un
día seleccionó a setenta y dos discípulos y los mandó delante suyo de dos
en dos. ¿Por qué de dos en dos y no individualmente? La razón es simple.
Dos personas que trabajan juntas por el reino de Dios están dando un
testimonio de amor y de unidad, y esta sola actitud ya es una predicación.
La Iglesia es comunidad y debe reflejar este carácter comunitario en toda
su vida.
El enviado de Cristo lo primero que debe hacer al entrar en una casa es
anunciar la paz: “¡Paz a esta casa!” Este anuncio no es un mero saludo
de cortesía, sino la presencia de una persona que lleva la paz en su
corazón y de la cual puede decirse: “dichosos los que trabajan por la paz,
porque a esos los va a llamar Dios hijos suyos”.

A Jubilee also entails the granting of indulgences. This practice
will acquire an even more important meaning in the Holy Year of
Mercy. God’s forgiveness knows no bounds. In the death and
resurrection of Jesus Christ, God makes even more evident his love
and its power to destroy all human sin. Reconciliation with God is made possible
through the paschal mystery and the mediation of the Church. Thus God is always
ready to forgive, and he never tires of forgiving in ways that are continually new and
surprising… In the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God forgives our sins, which he truly
blots out; and yet sin leaves a negative effect on the way we think and act. But the
mercy of God is stronger even than this. It becomes indulgence on the part of the
Father who, through the Bride of Christ, his Church, reaches the pardoned sinner and
frees him from every residue left by the consequences of sin, enabling him to act with
charity, to grow in love rather than to fall back into sin.

comportamientos y en nuestros pensamientos permanece. La misericordia de Dios es incluso
más fuerte que esto. Ella se transforma en indulgencia del Padre que a través de la Esposa de
Cristo alcanza al pecador perdonado y lo libera de todo residuo, consecuencia del pecado,
habilitándolo a obrar con caridad, a crecer en el amor más bien que a recaer en el pecado.

“It is not enough to love those who love us,” says Pope Francis. “It is not enough to do
good to those who do good to us in return. To change the world for the better it is
necessary to do good to those who are not able to do the same for us.” At times we may
think that we cannot practice some of these works of mercy. Following are this week’s
ideas of how to do it. But remember, these are only suggestions. Let your imagination guide
you!
Shelter the homeless:
 Welcome your and your children’s friends. Your Christian home is a gift to others.
 Donate to your local homeless shelters.
 Volunteer at a soup kitchen and bring your children to see the work done there.
Visit the imprisoned:
 Reach out to elderly and homebound neighbors.
 Mentor or help a new mother during the first few months of motherhood, that
sometimes can feel a bit like a prison.
 Reach out to friend whose children struggle with addictions and are in need of
encouragement.

July 9, St. Augustine Zhao Rong and companions,
martyrs. The 120 martyrs in this group died between 1648
and 1930. Most of them were born in China—children,
parents, catechists or laborers, as well as 4 diocesan priests
ranging from nine years of age to 72. This group includes
four Chinese diocesan priests. The 33 foreign-born martyrs
were mostly priests or women religious, Dominicans, Jesuits,
Franciscans, the Paris Foreign Mission Society. Augustine
Zhao Rong was a Chinese solider who accompanied Bishop
John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse to his martyrdom in Beijing.
Augustine was baptized and not long after was ordained as a
diocesan priest. He was martyred in 1815. These 120
martyrs were canonized in Rome on October 1, 2000.
Julio 9, San Agustín Zhao Rong y compañeros, mártires, Los 120 mártires de este grupo
murieron entre 1648 y 1930, y son en su mayoría nativos de China—niños, padres, catequistas y
trabajadores, entre 9 y 72 años de edad. Los 33 mártires extranjeros son en su mayoría misioneros
de diversas órdenes religiosas: dominicos, franciscanos, jesuitas, salesianos y miembros de la
