FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B)
Ez 2:2–5 / 2 Cor 12:7–10 / Mk 6:1–6a
My mother always thought I was a little bit stubborn.
“Not stubborn,” I said, “but sometimes, I think things
should be done a different way.” What I usually meant by
that was that things should be done my way. “I know,” she
said, “stubborn.” I recalled that conversation when my
daughters reached the same age that I was when I
thought my mother was dumb and didn’t know anything
and my desire was to do always what I thought best.
They have since conceded that I might know a little, just
as I gave my mother that same credit as I got older. We all
have our periods of stubbornness. Some- times we are
right; sometimes we can be persuaded differ- ently, and
sometimes we have to persist until our mistakes become
evident even to us, even if that means we suffer the consequences of our folly.
The people of Nazareth were astonished at Jesus’ teaching
and wisdom. Their stubborn refusal to believe in him grew
out of their familiarity. “We know him and his family,” they
thought, “He can’t possibly have this power.” Stubbornness is a hard thing to overcome. Mark records that Jesus was amazed at their refusal to believe. Their very refusal made it difficult for him to perform mighty deeds (a
phrase used of God in the Old Testament), and so he did
what he could: He healed a few sick people. Some of us still
have a stubborn streak. Has that ever interfered in our
recognition of God’s power? Do we hang on to our belief
that our way is best even if that hurts us? Reflect on that.

ADULT FAITH FORMATION: A CONTINUING CATECHESIS
A Summarized Presentation of the Catholic
Faith – Based on the Paulist Tradition

Focus Questions:
What is contained in the New Testament? How the
Acts of the Apostles is to be understood and interpreted?

The Acts of the Apostles has three themes
or big ideas: Holy Spirit, growth of the church, and
apostolic preaching and bearing witness to Christ. Its
first half by Luke begins where the gospel ends, with
the ascension of Jesus. The author Luke then presents
his version of the expansion of Christianity from Jerusalem to Rome. In the early chapters he presents the
struggle of the primitive Christian community to free
itself from the Law and Judaism.
The last half of Acts presents the three
missionary journeys of Paul. The author composes sermons that he attributes to Paul and others, giving us
insights into the early preaching of the apostles.
From one point of view, this book is
wrongly titled. It could be called” The Acts of Peter
and Paul.” They are the only prominent characters in
the book. Peter dominates chapters 2--12 while Paul
dominates chapters 13- 28. Other apostles and Christian preachers, of course, are mentioned, but none receives the limelight like Peter and Paul. From Luke’s
perspective, they sum up the explanation of how Christianity became a world religion. Flawed characters
though they were, Peter who denied Jesus, and Paul
who persecuted the church, they nevertheless became
the key vehicles for the spread of the gospel.
ACTS reads like a history book, but we
must be careful to understand how this story is presented. It is not to be read as objective modern history.
It is more of a faith document. As with his Gospel,
Luke tells the story of the church the way he wants it
to be understood by readers - - to have a strong belief
and intense love of God.
To conclude about this book, we are to
understand that the birth of the church is a grand miracle. It is due to God’s bountiful grace which has
operated actively with submissive cooperation and
hard work of the apostles and their successors through
time.

To baptize a Child under the age of six years,
parents should register the child at least two
weeks in advance and bring his/her Birth Certificate or Certification of the Hospital. Baptisms are
performed the Third Saturday of the month at
12:00 noon. Parents and Godparents must attend a PreBaptismal class the Wednesday before at 7:30 pm.
Registrations are made during Office hours.
Only the mother or father may register a child.
Note: Godparents, if they are a couple living together must
be married by the Church. If Single, must be Catholic,
baptized, confirmed and have received First Communion.

immediate sight during the summer. It’s important to
remind your child that if another child or adult – including people they know and trust – try to touch
them inappropriately they should: Say NO and GET

feel scared, uncomfortable or confused. Tell them to
TRUST THEIR FEELINGS and be sure to TELL a
trusted adult. And it’s never too late to tell a trusted

FE EN JESUCRISTO
El incidente que nos cuenta san Marcos en el Evangelio de hoy se basa en un doble asombro: primero, los
vecinos y parientes de Jesús se asombran de verlo enseñar en la sinagoga con tanta sabiduría, y de ver su poder
para hacer milagros. Y Jesús, a su vez, se extraña de la
incredulidad de aquella gente, que no pone su fe en él,
no porque hallen alguna falta en su enseñanza o en su
ministerio, sino porque conocen sus orígenes y su familia. Aquí, como en muchos otros incidentes de su Evangelio, Marcos nos deja ver un aspecto bastante íntimo de
la parte humana de la doble naturaleza de Jesús. Para
reforzar lo que quiere que veamos, Marcos nos cuenta
cómo Jesús vuelve a su pueblo, y nos hace notar que
está allí entre sus familiares. Y de la gente de quienes
más esperaba es que menos recibe. En la época en que
estaba escribiendo su Evangelio, san Marcos trataba de
enseñar una lección muy importante para la casa de Israel, el Dios de la Alianza esperaba encontrar la fe más
intensa en la casa de Israel, pero muchas veces allí fue
donde menos la encontró. Y es bueno que reflexionemos
sobre esto, nosotros que hoy día somos el Pueblo de
Dios. Para que la Sabiduría de Cristo continúe en este
mundo, y para que nuestras vidas sean signos de su poder, Jesús espera hallar, y tiene que hallar, una gran fe
en nosotros. ¿La hallará? ¿O quedará, una vez más,
pasmado de nuestra poca fe?
