TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B)

Commonly in recent years, large corporations whose business practices are questioned have replied, “Everything
we have done is legal.” I have always been uncomfortable
with that because it implies that those in charge will not
do anything more than they have to in order to stay within
the law. The minimum standard becomes the maximum
standard. In our hearts and minds, though, we know that
the common good is best served when people do more
than they must. While doing the minimum required is everyone’s job, we expect more of those who are in positions
of leadership. We expect more of our best and brightest.
And Jesus expects more of those who follow him.
The young man who comes to Jesus is both secure and
comfortable in doing what is required. Jesus agrees that
he has done the minimum. But the young man himself
knew there was more he could do. His intelligence, curiosity, and deep reflection told him that obeying the law
was not enough. When he persisted in his question, Jesus
called him to more. In the same breath, Jesus challenges
all of us to find what more we can do. We might obey the
Ten Commandments, attend Mass every Sunday, and not
offend anyone. But do we care for those who have less,
support the Church, and follow Jesus even when it is difficult? Are we willing to sacrifice our possessions and our
lives, if necessary, for his sake? Is there more you can do
today to reflect Christ to the world?

- Images of God (Continued)
Focus Questions:
What may be considered as childhood images of God? How do we grow as an adult in our
images of God?

In the process of letting our images grow, we
must remember that we don’t make God in our image; we are rather being made in God’s Image.
What images of God, do we see in the Hebrew Scriptures? Firstly, may be an image of a Harsh One, who
is very concerned with people keeping the divine
rules, a God characterized by thunder and lightning
on Mt. Sinai. Secondly, a God who punished Sodom
and Gomorrah for being sinful. Thirdly, a God who
asked Abraham to sacrifice his only son and said
“No”, when Abraham was to do it. Fourthly, a loving
God who has more tenderness toward Israel than a
mother has for the child of her womb. Fifthly, a forgiving God to Jonah when he disobeyed Him and had
suffered a consequence. Sixthly, a generous God
who shares a Divine wisdom with every man, woman, and child willing to prize that wisdom.
We can grow in our images of God by accepting all those mentioned images in faith. Likewise,
the New Testament provides us sources for Images
of God. Our God is, as revealed in here: 1) the
Good Shepherd (John 10); 2) the Loving Father of
the Prodigal Son ( Luke 15); 3) the Final Judge ( Matthew 25), which presents us with a tough challenge
to serve Christ in the needs of our brothers and sisters;4) a God to the Pharisee praying in the Temple
( “ O God , I thank you that I am not like the rest of
Humanity…” , while a compassionate God to tax collector who prayed, “..O God, be merciful to me, a
sinner’ (Luke 18). Hence, the prevalent image of a
loving and generous New Testament God leads us
the need for ongoing conversion to the Lord’s ways.
The God in the New Testament and in the
Hebrew Scriptures, are sources of great inspiration
for developing our images of God. We just need to be
open to reflect on these diverse images. As we encounter challenges to our faith, these truthful images
of God, along with our healthy image of oneself and
of others, will enable us to handle crises in a faithfilled way.

To baptize a Child under the age of six
years, parents should register the child
at least two weeks in advance and bring
his/her Birth Certificate or Certification of the Hospital. Baptisms are performed the Third Saturday of the month at 12:00
noon. Parents and Godparents must attend a PreBaptismal class the Wednesday before at 7:30 pm.
Registrations are made during Office hours.
Only the mother or father may register a child.
Note: Godparents, if they are a couple living together must be married by the Church. If Single,
must be Catholic, baptized, confirmed and have
received First Communion.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE
La mayoría de las personas que viven en Estados Unidos han emigrado para mejorar su situación
económica. Muchísimos lo han logrado mediante
mucho trabajo, un buen salario y comprándose una
buena casa en un vecindario tranquilo. En pocas palabras, se han hecho ricos. No obstante, éste mismo
sueño se ha convertido en una pesadilla, pues todos
sueñan con ser famosos, ganar mucho dinero, tener
el carro más lujoso y vivir en un condominio muy exclusivo. El chiste es hacerse ricos a toda costa. Muchas veces sin importar los medios.
En la Palestina del tiempo de Jesús todo mundo
soñaba con hacerse rico. Las riquezas eran consideradas bendición de Dios, por eso los discípulos se
asombraron cuando Jesús declara: “Es más fácil que
un camello pase por el ojo de la aguja, que un rico
entre en el Reino de Dios” (Marcos 10:25). El ojo de
la aguja era una puerta baja y estrecha por la cual
pasaba la gente común a Jerusalén. Jesús no está
negando la entrada al cielo a los ricos, basta que
hagan lo que hace el camello para pasar: despojarse
de su carga.
