ENCOUNTER THE JOY OF THE GOSPEL
Year Two: Focus on the Domestic Church –
Marriage & Family
REFLECTION
29th Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant."
In the wake of James and John's vanity, Jesus offers this directive. These
two apostles had been thinking in terms of prominence, glory, and
worldly honor. They wanted their association with Jesus to lead to public recognition and respect as they took their places at his right and left.
But Jesus put them in their place.
As was typical of so many of his teachings, Jesus upset the
status quo. He told his followers that, although "great ones make their
authority over them felt ... it shall not be so among you." Then, he put
forward this clear image of the servant leader: "Whoever wishes to be
first among you will be the slave of all."
As followers of Christ, this instruction applies to us as well. We are
called to the humility of service that seeks neither personal glory nor
gain. We are called to use what authority we may have in the world for
the benefit of our brothers and sisters, not for the sake of stroking our
own egos. It's easy to pat ourselves on the back for the good works that
we do--to think that we are superior Christians, that others owe us a debt
of gratitude, or that our names should be engraved on a public placard in
some noteworthy hall. But Jesus calls us to a different standard--the one
he himself exemplified through his life of service.
At the same time, today's Gospel gives us cause to meditate
upon our association with Jesus and what we hope to get out of it. Why
are we Christian? Are we only after the glory of heaven? Are we afraid
to publicly profess our faith when it might hurt our reputation? Or are
we in this for the love of the Lord, who came into this world "to serve
and to give his life as a ransom" for us?

Deacon Corner: (By Deacon Al)
Ofthe three apostles who comprised the inner circle of Jesus' disciples
(Peter,James and John), we know the least about the apostle James. We
do know, however, that the apostle James was the eldest brother of the
apostle John andthat their father's name was Zebedee (their mother's
name was Salome.) James, his brother John, Peter and Andrew were all
partners in a fishing businessprior to being called by Christ Jesus to
follow Him. Zebedee was, also, apartner in the business. Thereis some
evidence that James was the first cousin of Jesus the Messiah and hadbeen acquainted with Him from infancy. It is believed that his motherSalome was the sister of Jesus' mother Mary. Notmuch is known of
his ministry after Jesus' resurrection. It is believed, however, that he
lived another 14 years before his martyrdom. In fact, the apostle James
was the first apostle to suffer martyrdom. By order ofHerod Agrippa I,
James was beheaded in Jerusalem about the feast of Easter, 44AD. Itis
believed that within this 14 year period, James visited the Jewish colonistand slaves in Spain to preach the Gospel. Ithas been said that when
the apostle James was led out to die, a man who hadbrought false accusations against him walked with him to the place ofexecution. He had
doubtless expected to see James looking pale andfrightened but he saw
him, instead, bright and joyous, like a conqueror who hadwon a great
battle. The false witness greatly wondered at this and becameconvinced
that the Savior in whom the prisoner by his side believed must be
thetrue God or He could not impart such cheerfulness and courage to a
man about todie. The man himself, therefore, became a convert to
Christianity and wascondemned to die with James the apostle ( both
were consequently beheaded onthe same day and with the same sword.)
After-L.I.F.E.
LIFE participants gathered to reflect together in the wake of so many
shootings, bombings and other tragic acts of violence. Bishop Barron
provided the morning’s insight in the form of a homily written the Sunday after 9-11. This is a quote from that homily
“The attacks of September 11th have left us stunned and speechless. Yet
our tradition brings the word of God to bear on even the darkest events.
There are four mysteries that emerge from the tragedy: The mystery of
wickedness; the mystery of the impermanence of the world; the mystery
of salvation; and the mystery of forgiveness.…”Google the homily and
listen to the entire Podcast. It will be worth your while.

Parents: Year 2 of the Diocesan Evangelization Pastoral Plan is Focusing on the Domestic Church. “This means that it is in the context of
the family that we first learn who God is and how to prayerfully seek
God’s will for us.” Teach your children prayers at a early age. They can
learn them as young as 2-4 years old. Talk to them about your faith and
share how God has touched your life. Show them how to be caring to our
neighbors by bringing none perishable items for the Outreach Center and
signing up to different events and needs here at the church. (Men’s Shelter, Parish Picnic, Church Festival, VBS volunteer, Catechist for Religious Education or Children’s Liturgy, read the Word in church, be a
Eucharistic Minister, etc…) Your example is what they will follow.
EDGE/LIFETEEN
This time we talked about the Beatitudes. We discussed the Beatitudes
and how they are the way to happiness and the way to a life spent with
the Lord. As people longing for true happiness, they are the surest path
of holiness, the most direct route to living a life that is Christ-centered, as
they are the very way that Christ loved us. It would be good to read the
Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-12) with your teen. Our next EDGE/
LIFETEEN session will be held Monday, Oct. 26th from 6:308:30pm. Our topic: Do’s and Don’ts: The Ten Commandments.
INSTAN-TEEN-IOUS MESSENGING: We are launching a new approach that lets us inform you instantaneously of program updates, reminders or changes via text messaging. Here’s how it works: Text the

NEW POLICY FOR MEETINGS AT ST. AUGUSTINE CHURCH
As God’s people, we know he loves children and seeing us do great
things for one another. We are fortunate to have such a beautiful, grand
facility to gather and do great things for one another, to share and spread
his word. We are at a time in society that we must and should keep our
children safe and protect all God’s children. Even in our holy place, we
must be vigilant of our children’s whereabouts and keep them safe. It is
VIRTUS policy (diocesan policy for protecting children) that no child
be left unattended in the halls, commons, church, classroom or exterior
of the buildings without an adult 18 years of age and VIRTUS certified.
Please be advised that if you bring your child to a meeting, the child
must be in the meeting room with you at all times and not sent outside,
in the hallway or any other area of the facility. It is the responsibility of
the meeting leaders to make sure any children brought to a meeting remain in the meeting room with you. Hall monitors and staff will open
the door to accompany your children into your meeting room for their
safety if they are found unaccompanied in the halls, different classroom,
commons or exterior of the building.
Thank you for helping us keep the children of St. Augustine Church
safe. Call Caroline with questions or concerns 275-7962 Ext 1112

¿Has pedido cosas a
alguien sin ponerle atención a sus propuestas? ¿En qué sentido te
pareces a Santiago y Juan?
