THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B)

A fourth-century legend from Catholics in the Eastern part of
the Roman Empire tells us the name of the woman in today’s
Gospel is Beronike. A woman of great faith, she knew that the
Law considered her unclean because she had a flow of blood
and no one could touch her. When she saw Jesus, she didn’t ask
him to touch or even speak to her. She didn’t want him to feel
what she felt—outcast and isolated. She simply believed that
touching his garment would bring her relief.
A couple of weeks ago, St. Paul told us that we walk by faith,
not by sight. Faith was all this woman had to go on; everything
else had failed. What she heard about Jesus stirred something in
her soul, and she followed her convictions. She wasn’t disappointed. The power of Christ, who heals us of whatever deeply
wounds us, went out immediately to her who dared to hope.
When he called out to see who touched him, her fear didn’t
keep her away. She was saved by faith.
Being saved doesn’t always mean miraculous cures, but it
does involve standing before Christ as we are—bleeding, broken, sinful—and trusting that he is our answer. We don’t know for
sure what happened to the woman. But her legend continued. When
Jesus carried his cross to his crucifixion, a woman stepped
out to stop the flow of blood and sweat streaking his face. We
know her by the Latin translation of Beronike—Ve- ronica—
which carries with it an additional meaning: “true icon,” in
reference to the facial image that Jesus left on her cloth.

A Summarized Presentation of the Catholic
Faith – Based on the Paulist Tradition

Focus Questions:
What is contained in the New Testament? What
does the Acts of the Apostles tell us?

Acts like the Gospel of Luke was originally written
in polished Greek. Luke mainly pictures therein Paul
teaching in Rome about the Lord Jesus. Acts is a book
full of action, lively personalities, colorful narratives,
and well- crafted speeches.
The Acts, as claimed by scholars, is historically,
highly- reliable. This is so, as it records names, dates,
and places. But more than this, it teaches the basic religious truth. It proclaims that Christ is the Savior of
the world.
One of Luke’s favorite tools for proclaiming Christ
as the Savior of the world is the use of speeches and
sermons. They occupy one fourth of the book. The
speeches in the Acts are not meant to be word-for- word
reports since Luke wrote it twenty to fifty years after
the events he was describing. Rather Acts presents the
themes of early Christian preaching .Peter’s sermon on
Pentecost, for example, is regarded representative of
early Christian proclamations of salvation and of Baptism as the appropriate response to Christ.
In Acts, Luke uses repetition to emphasize special
themes and events. The communal nature
Of the Church and its Eucharist- centered worship, for
example, are spotlighted in idealized summaries of early Christian life (2: 42-47; 4: 32-35; 9: 31). The story of
Paul’s conversion is told three times (9: 1-22; 22: 1-21;
26: 1-23). The account of Peter’s evangelization and
Baptism of the Roman centurion Cornelius is reported
three times (15: 19-21; 15: 28-29; 21: 25). These repetitions and others as well, call the readers’ attention to
the most significant messages of Acts.
The Acts of the Apostles is a summary of the early
years of the Church: breaking of the Bread, community
prayer, communal life, to sharing of possessions. It can
help us understand how the first Christians came to see
themselves as the body of Christ on Earth. It can lead
us to a better comprehension of what it means to be a
member of the One Church, One Body of Christ today.

support the most disadvantaged: victims of war,
oppression, and natural disasters. This is an opportunity to join with our Holy Father, Pope Francis, and be a witness of charity to our suffering

By teaching “total body safety” we further
efforts to stop abuse
Parents and caregivers should stress that a
child’s entire body is private and be watchful of
adults who might be “grooming” a child by constantly tickling, kissing, or hugging them. A child
will often tell a parent he or she does not want to
hug or kiss someone – and parents should listen
and respect their wishes. By teaching “total body
safety” to adults, children, and young people, we
are furthering our efforts to stop abuse and to
make the world a safer place for all of God’s children. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article,

To baptize a Child under the age of six years, parents
should register the child at least two weeks in
advance and bring his/her Birth Certificate or
Certification of the Hospital. Baptisms are performed the Third Saturday of the month at 12:00
noon. Parents and Godparents must attend a PreBaptismal class the Wednesday before at 7:30 pm.
Registrations are made during Office hours.
Only the mother or father may register a child.
Note: Godparents, if they are a couple living together must
be married by the Church. If Single, must be Catholic,
baptized, confirmed and have received First Communion.
