Perú: un hub importante con buenas perspectivas
Peru: an important hub with good prospects
QUERIDOS AMIGOS,
Dear friends,
Después de 1967, las Reuniones Anuales de las
Juntas de Gobernadores del Grupo del Banco Mundial
(GBM) y del Fondo Monetario Internacional (FMI) regresan
a Latinoamérica y esta vez, el encuentro se realizará
en nuestra capital. Habiendo sido los anfitriones de la
COP20 el año pasado, esta reunión logra consolidar al
Perú como un hub mundial para eventos internacionales
de primer calibre. La organización de estos eventos
internacionales demanda una inversión significativa en
infraestructura, lo cual es sin duda, una buena noticia
para todos nuestros miembros que trabajan en todas
las industrias relacionadas a este rubro. Sin embargo,
no perdamos de vista que hay una brecha muy amplia
en este rubro estimada en US$121 mil millones, según el
estudio de Perú Top Publications, por lo que tenemos que
estar atentos a nuevos impulsos y proyectos.
Por otro lado, la convención internacional de minería
PERUMIN resaltó también que el Perú no solo es Lima,
por lo que eventos de gran envergadura internacional se
pueden llevar a cabo en provincias, incluyendo Arequipa
y Cuzco. Para lograr esto, nosotros como representantes
del sector privado, debemos de enfocarnos en ver las
oportunidades que se avecinan en el 2016, tanto desde un
ángulo político y también económico.
PERUMIN también destacó que en tiempos de
“vacas flacas” lo que debemos de hacer es unirnos
más, intercambiar buenas experiencias y apalancar
plataformas que existen para hacerlo. Bajo su mandato
de atender a sus socios proveyendo un espacio para
forjar sinergias, la Cámara de Comercio Canadá
Perú está impulsando un proyecto que fomenta el
intercambio de buenas prácticas en el relacionamiento
con stakeholders en áreas mineras, el cual también
ambiciona crear herramientas de comunicación
relevantes y prácticas para, fomentar un orgullo
nacional en torno a la minería. Que mejor tiempo que la
coyuntura actual para impulsar proyectos dinámicos,
creativos e innovadores que aporten a nuestro sector.
After 1967, the Annual Meetings of the Boards
of Governors of the World Bank Group (WBG) and
International Monetary Fund (IMF) will return to
Latin America and this time, the meeting will be
held in our capital. After hosting COP20 last year,
this meeting achieved to consolidate Peru as a
global hub for top-caliber international events. The
organization of these international events demand
a significant investment in infrastructure, which is
certainly good news for all our members working
in all industries related to this sector. However, we
shall not lose sight that there is a wide gap in this
Sector estimated to be 121 billion dollars, according
to the study of Peru Top Publications, so we have to
be alert to new impulses and projects.
On the other hand, the international mining
convention PERUMIN also highlighted that Peru is
not only Lima, so that events of great international
significance can be held in the provinces, including
Arequipa and Cuzco. To achieve this, we as
representatives of the private sector should focus
on seeing the opportunities that lie ahead in 2016,
both from a political and economic angle.
PERUMIN also emphasized that during
“lean times” what we should do is to be more
united, share good experiences and leverage
existing platforms to do so. Under its mandate
to serve their members providing a space to
build synergies, the Canada Peru Chamber
of Commerce is promoting a project that
encourages the exchange good practices in
the relationship with stakeholders in mining
areas, which also aims to create relevant
communication tools and practices and to
encourage national pride around mining. What
a better time than the current situation to push
dynamic, creative and innovative projects that
contribute to our sector.

n mayo de este año, la Asociación Internacional de
Congresos y Convenciones (ICCA en inglés) reveló
que Perú había escalado cuatro posiciones en su
ranking mundial pasando del puesto 43 en el 2013 al
39 en el 2014. De esta manera, el Perú logró superar destinos
consagrados para convenciones como los Emiratos Árabes
Unidos, Indonesia y Rusia.
Por su lado, Lima ocupó el cuarto lugar del ranking ICCA
n May this year, the International Congress and Convention
Association (ICCA) revealed Peru had gone up four
positions in the world ranking going from place 43 in 2013
to 39 in 2014. Thus surpassing well established convention
destinations such as the United Arab Emirates, Indonesia and
Russia.

2014 a nivel de Las Américas en el número de reuniones
que tuvieron sede en esta capital. Lima fue la sede de 64
eventos internacionales en el 2014, empatando con Río de
Janeiro y superando a Nueva York (55), la Ciudad de México
(53) y Bogotá (49). Su principal competencia en la región es
ahora Buenos Aires (91), Santiago (71) y Sao Paulo (66).
Sin duda alguna, los méritos de Lima están siendo
reconocidos al nivel mundial: es la única capital sudamericana
con acceso al Océano Pacífico, posee una incomparable oferta
turística y gastronómica y su aeropuerto ha sido elegido por Í

EL CENTRO DE CONVENCIONES DE LIMA: EL MÁS GRANDE DE AMÉRICA DEL SUR
Hasta este año, el Perú carecía de un centro de convenciones idóneo para
albergar mega eventos. Las grandes cumbres tenían que realizarse en hoteles,
en el Centro de Convenciones del Jockey Plaza o en el Museo de la Nación. Para
la COP 20, el gobierno peruano tuvo que fabricar un complejo sobre un área de
90,000 m2 en el Cuartel General del Ejército para recibir a 12,000 visitantes. “En los
últimos diez años se han gastado más de US$150 millones en montar y desmontar
escenarios de trascendencia internacional“, subrayó Carlos Canales, presidente
del Consejo Directivo del Buró de Convenciones y Visitantes, una asociación sin
fines de lucro que promueve a la capital como destino de reuniones.
El Centro de Convenciones de Lima (LCC por sus siglas en Inglés) será
estratégicamente inaugurado para atender a los miles de asistentes que participarán
en la Junta de Gobernadores del Banco Mundial (BM) y del Fondo Monetario
Internacional (FMI) del 5 al 12 de octubre del 2015. Dicho mega evento pondrá al Perú
en vitrina ante 188 delegaciones que vienen para discutir temas relacionados a la lucha
contra la pobreza y el desarrollo económico internacional y las finanzas.
Ubicado en el Centro Cultural de la Nación, el LCC demandó una inversión
total de más de $ 154 millones de dólares, cuenta con cinco niveles principales
de salas de conferencias y cuatro niveles subterráneos de estacionamientos. El
marco legal propuesto por Proinversión permitió que el sector privado participe en
la operación y mantenimiento del LCC, a través de una asociación público privada.
El plazo de concesión se iniciará después de los eventos del BM y el FMI.
Al margen de esta importante inversión, el Buró de Convenciones y
Visitantes, estima que el LCC no sería suficiente. Esta asociación estima
que la ciudad necesita por lo menos otros tres centros de convenciones
modulares en Lima Norte, Lima Sur y Lima Centro para descentralizar la
demanda local e internacional. Esta necesidad es una buena noticia para
aquellas compañías interesadas en inversiones en infraestructura.

TRABAJANDO EN EQUIPO PARA VER HACIA EL FUTURO
El posicionamiento de Perú como un destino importante para eventos
internacionales es el resultado de muchos años de trabajo conjugado entre los
sectores público (el Ministerio de Comercio Exterior y Turismo - MINCETUR)
y el sector privado. La meta a largo plazo es hacer que otras ciudades de
Perú puedan también atraer eventos regionales e internacionales. El Buró de
Convenciones y Visitantes señaló que “para ello, se tiene que realizar un arduo
trabajo en el fortalecimiento de los burós en destinos como Arequipa, Ica y
Trujillo, e impulsar la creación del Buró de Convenciones en el Cusco e Iquitos”.
El resto de las ciudades peruanas que quieran seguir los pasos de Lima
tendrán que invertir en infraestructura. La gran crítica hacia Lima como hub
para convenciones internacionales es que aún no cuenta con la infraestructura
suficiente. Según información del Buró de Lima, la ciudad necesita crecer en
infraestructura hotelera ya que sus 104 hoteles no se dan abasto para acoger a
los participantes de grandes reuniones. Esto implica una inversión aproximada
de $2,500 millones de dólares para el 2021 en hoteles de todas las categorías
y que podrían venir pronto de cadenas de lujo incluyendo el Intercontinental,
Hyatt, Windham y Four Seasons, siendo esta última canadiense.
Según una estimación hecha el año pasado por este Buró, se espera que
Lima pueda acoger más de 100 eventos por año en el 2018. Por su parte, el
MINCETUR considera que en el 2016 habrán más de 130 reuniones, pero no
todas serán en la capital, sino en ciudades como Paracas, Arequipa y Cusco.

Until this year, Peru lacked an adequate convention centre to host mega
events. The great summits had to be held in hotels, the Jockey Plaza’s
Convention Centre or the Museo de la Nación. For the COP 20, the Peruvian
government had to create a complex on an area of 90,000 m2 at the Army’s
Headquarters to receive 12,000 visitors. “We have spent over US$ 150 million
during the last ten years setting up and taking down stages of international
importance” pointed out Carlos Canales, President of the Governing Board of
the Convention and Visitors Bureau, a non-profit association which promotes
the capital city as an international meeting destination.
The Lima Convention Centre (LCC) will be strategically inaugurated to
welcome the thousands of visitors who will attend the Annual Meetings of the
Boards of Governors of the World Bank (WB) and the International Monetary
Fund (IMF) between the 5th and the 12th of October 2015. This mega event will
showcase Peru in front of 188 delegations that are coming to discuss issues
related to the fight against poverty and international economic and financial
development.
Located at the Cultural Centre of the Nation, the LCC has required a total
investment of over $ 154 million dollars; it has five main levels of conference
rooms and four underground levels of parking lots. The legal framework
proposed by Proinversion allowed the private sector to participate in the
operation and maintenance of the LCC, through a public-private partnership.
The concession term shall begin after the WB and IMF events.
Aside from this important investment, the Convention and Visitors Bureau
estimates that the LCC will not be enough. This association estimates that
the city needs at least another three modular convention centers in Northern
Lima, Southern Lima and Central Lima in order to decentralize local and
international demand. This requirement is good news for those companies
who are interested in investing on infrastructure.
TEAM WORK TO LOOK AHEAD
The positioning of Peru as an important destination for international
events is the result of many years of joint work between the public sector
(the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism – MINCETUR) and the private
sector. The long-term goal is getting other cities in Peru to attract regional
and international events. The Convention and Visitors Bureau pointed out
that “to that end, hard work is needed in order to strengthen the bureaus at
destinations such as Arequipa, Ica and Trujillo, and fostering the creation
of the Convention Bureau in Cusco and Iquitos”. The other Peruvian cities
aiming to follow Lima’s steps will have to invest on infrastructure. The main
criticism made to Lima as hub for international conventions is that it still
lacks infrastructure. According to Lima’s Bureau, the city needs to increase
its hotel infrastructure as its 104 hotels cannot provide enough lodging for all
the participants of massive meetings. This implies an approximate investment
of $ 2,500 million dollars by 2021 in hotels of all categories which may come
from luxury chains such as Intercontinental, Hyatt, Windham and Four
Seasons, which is a Canadian chain.
According to a last year estimate of the Bureau, Lima is expected to host

Peru’s representative at the Board of Governors of the WBG is

will represent the country at the Board of Governors of the IMF. The
Annual Meetings are chaired by a Governor from the WBG and a
Governor from the IMF. Every year this Chair is rotated among the

importance of the issues they deal with and the participation of
very high level representatives of the economic, monetary and
financial sector from all over the world. They generally take place
in September-October in Washington, DC for two consecutive
years and in another member State on the third year.
Not only officials of the member States participate at these
meetings, but also other actors such as representatives of the civil
society, the private sector and the academy. Due to the great number
and diversity of representatives of the member States, the Annual
Meetings become a unique place for consulting, both formally

The WBG and IMF Joint Secretariat is in charge of planning
and carrying out the Annual Meetings. This was created by both
international organizations and is managed by the secretaries of
those entities. The WBG and IMF analyze and accept the invitation of
a member State to take the Annual Meetings outside of Washington,
DC to their country. This country is then called the Host Country.
Lima being selected as the venue for 2015 is the result of hard
promotion work which Peru has undertaken for several years, even
from previous governments. Lima was chosen in September 2012
as the venue of the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors.

this important endeavor to promote
the Pacific Alliance.
This important mission aims at
entering into bilateral agreements
for dual-degree programs and
exchange of professors and students,
affording them knowledge of the
Canadian model of collaboration
between universities and private
corporations. Participants will take
their insights back to their home
countries where they may replicate
the model and be able to add value to
the curricula of their own universities.
In addition, students will gain the
skills required by the private sector,
identify opportunities for joint
research projects, arrange seminars
delivered by Canadian faculty in
Peruvian universities, and strengthen
educational links between Canada,
Peru, and Colombia in the context of
the Pacific Alliance.
This time the educational mission
will visit Calgary and Vancouver, two
cities included among the five best
places in the world to live. Participants
will also travel to the cities of
Edmonton and Victoria. A strategic
agenda has been designed for this
mission including visits to universities
ranked in the world’s top 500 as
well as other colleges, polytechnic
institutions, and ministries. This
includes visits to institutions such as
the University of Calgary, University
of Alberta, University of British
Columbia, NAIT (Northern Alberta
Institute of Technology), the Alberta
Ministry of Education, the British
Columbia Institute of Technology,
Simon Fraser University, the Royal
Roads University, and Camosun

College, among others.

y, en setiembre, Toronto fue el
centro de atención de la industria
cinematográfica. Ambos festivales
sirven para difundir la pasión por el
séptimo arte. Sin embargo, se dirigen a
públicos distintos y sus metas difieren.

EN LIMA: PROMOVER EL SÉPTIMO ARTE
CON FINES CULTURALES Y EDUCATIVOS
Año a año, el Festival de Cine de Lima,
organizado por el Centro Cultural de la
Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú
(PUCP) y con apoyo del sector privado, crece
y se va forjando un espacio importante
entre los festivales de cine de la región. Este
año, el Festival contó con la presencia de un
invitado de lujo, el genial cineasta alemán
Werner Herzog, considerado “el director
más importante de la actualidad” por el
mítico François Truffaut.
El objetivo del festival de Lima no es
promover el mercado de compra y venta de
películas por parte de distribuidores como
lo es en el caso de los grandes encuentros
de cine como Cannes, Berlín y Toronto. Los
fines del encuentro de cine de la PUCP son
educativos. “Nuestra meta es poder difundir
un cine distinto al que existe en el circuito
comercial y servir como vitrina para nuevas
propuestas”, resaltó Ana María Teruel,
coordinadora de cine del Centro Cultural de
la PUCP al conversar con Dialogue.
Este año el festival contó con 47% más
audiencia que en 2014. Alrededor de 25,000
amantes del séptimo arte disfrutaron de
un festín de más de 300 películas de países
como Irán, Turquía, Alemania, España,
Francia, Holanda, Reino Unido, Vietnam y
Canadá. Asimismo, la PUCP ha logrado que
el festival llegue también a 43 sedes a nivel
nacional, incluyendo Cusco, Lambayeque,
Trujillo, Iquitos, Piura, Arequipa y
Amazonas gracias a la Muestra de Cine
Itinerante que fue realizada paralelamente
al festival y de forma gratuita.
Teruel explicó que el Festival de
Lima no genera ganancias. “El retorno
por taquilla no cubre ni la décima parte
de los gastos”, comentó. No hay mayor
impacto en la economía ya que el festival
no genera mayor turismo como en el caso
de Toronto. Sin embargo, gracias a este

Year after year, the Lima Film Festival
which is organized by the Cultural Center
of the Pontifical Catholic University of
Peru (PUCP), with private sector support,
grows in size and importance among
the film festivals of the region. This
year the Festival included a world-class
guest: the brilliant German filmmaker
Werner Herzog, who is considered by the
legendary François Truffaut as “the most
important film director alive”.
Contrary to what happens at the major
film events in Cannes, Berlin and Toronto,
the objective of the Lima Festival is not to
promote the purchase and sale of films by
distributors. The Lima PUCP film industry
meeting takes place, instead, with an
educational approach in mind. “Our goal is
to disseminate movies that are different
from those found in the commercial
circuit and also to be a showcase for new
proposals” highlighted Ana Maria Teruel,
cinema coordinator for PUCP’s Cultural
Center, during an interview with Dialogue.
Compared to 2014, this year the festival
audience grew by 47%. Some 25,000 movie
fans enjoyed a feast of over 300 films from
countries like Iran, Turkey, Germany, Spain,
France, Holland, the United Kingdom,
Vietnam and Canada. Moreover, the PUCP
has enabled the festival to reach 43
venues throughout the country, including
Cusco, Lambayeque, Trujillo, Iquitos,
Piura, Arequipa and Amazonas, thanks to
the traveling film showcase which was
organized at the same time as the festival
and was free of charge.
Teruel explained that the Lima Festival
does not intend to generate profit. “Box
office takings do not even cover one tenth
of the expenses” she said. It neither has an
impact on the economy because it does
not increase the number of tourists as
is the case in Toronto. However, thanks

on Woman, Lo mío y lo tuyo y Gleam, todas propuestas que
se alejan del cine comercial, formaron parte de la Muestra de
Cine Itinerante. Los largometrajes de ficción Mommy de Xavier
Dolan, Félix y Meira de Maxime Giroux y Sleeping Giant de
Andrew Cividino; y el documental Chamaleon de Ryan Mullins
formaron parte de la programación del festival.
Es importante destacar que Mommy, obra del controvertido director quebequense de 26 años, Xavier Dolan que narra la emocional
historia de una madre que mueve cielo y tierra para sacar adelante a su impredecible hijo con Trastorno de Déficit de Atención e
Hiperactividad, fue considerada en Lima como una de las mejores
películas exhibidas en el encuentro. El entusiasta grupo de seguidores de Dolan en Perú espera que el film sea proyectado pronta y
nuevamente en salas locales. ¡Esperamos que así sea!

It must be noted that Mommy, by the controversial, 26-yearold Québécois director Xavier Dolan, featuring the emotional
story of a mother who moves heaven and earth to drive forward her unpredictable son who suffers attention deficit and
hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), was considered as one of the
best movies shown at the Festival in Lima. The enthusiastic
group of Dolan followers in Peru expects the film to be again

El Festival Internacional de Cine de
Toronto (TIFF), que fue llevado a cabo del
10 al 20 de setiembre, cuenta con más
de 400,000 espectadores por edición y
genera un impacto económico anual de
CAD$ 189 millones (aproximadamente
US$ 144 millones). El TIFF es obligatorio
para los profesionales de la industria
cinematográfica ya que es considerado
hasta más influyente que Cannes.
Es ya sabido que si una película
es bien recibida en Toronto, tiene una
auténtica oportunidad de ser exitosa
mundialmente. Por eso, los grandes
distribuidores aman al TIFF. Ellos

Each one of the events of the Toronto
International Film Festival (TIFF), that

and created an annual economic impact

he founding members of the Chamber had an excellent
idea when they created our first institutional logo. It
combined the well-known Canadian maple leaf with
an alpaca, a typical animal of the Peruvian Andes. This
combination brought to mind the Canada-Peru Chamber of
Commerce as an entity that promotes the union between these
two great countries.
Now, that we approach our 20th birthday, we decided to
change our image. The first thing we changed was our logo,
which continues to have its original colors and symbols, but
under a new version that suggests a more organic, fluent
and cohesive link. We believe that our logo now calls upon
our members to see their Chamber as a platform that forges
synergies, opportunities and strengths in a very dynamic,
creative and powerful manner.
This new look goes hand in hand with the launching of our
new and refreshed website, with a more user friendly version,
new functionalities like enabling payment with a credit card,
and access to contents available only for our members through
our intranet.
We are pleased to invite our members to use this new
trademark and refreshed letter of introduction as a means to

l pasado 14 de agosto, la empresa MWH,
en cooperación con la Cámara de Comercio
Canadá Perú, realizaron en el Swissotel el
taller”Cierre de Minas: Lecciones aprendidas”, el cual contó con grandes expertos
nacionales e internacionales, quienes
mediante el uso de ejemplos y casos de estudio, explicaron la importancia de un cierre
adecuado de mina, el cual puede lograr
beneficios para las comunidades mineras de
hoy y propiciar la sostenibilidad de los países
en el futuro.
Este taller estuvo orientado a personas de
compañías mineras y aquellos colaboradores con perfiles de operadores, ingenieros,
planificadores y personal técnico.

l 26 de agosto la Cámara de Comercio Canadá Perú tuvo
el honor de contar con la presencia del Ing. Roque Benavides,
Presidente Ejecutivo de la Compañía de Minas Buenaventura,
en una exposición magistral titulada “¿Un Nuevo Ciclo en
la Minería Peruana? Oportunidades y Desafíos”. En dicha
reunión, el Ingeniero Benavides realizó una interesante
radiografía minera, nos comentó sobre el panorama de proyectos mineros a lo largo del país, así como una interesante
explicación sobre el círculo virtuoso de la minería, entre
otros temas de interés.
Una vez terminada la rueda de preguntas, se dio inicio a la
Cata de Vinos liderada por la reconocida enóloga Cristina
Vallarino, acompañada por más de 150 asistentes en esta primera edición del Mines & Wines.

n August 26, the Canada Peru Chamber of Commerce
was honored to have the presence of Eng. Roque
Benavides, CEO of the mining company Buenaventura,
in a masterly exhibition entitled “A new cycle in the
Peruvian Mining? Opportunities and Challenges “.
At that meeting, Engineer Benavides made an
interesting mining radiography, commented to us about
the projetcs outlook for miners throughout the country,
as well as an interesting explanation of the virtuous
circle of mining, among other topics of interest.
After the round of questions ﬁnished, the wine tasting
led by the prestigious enologist, Cristina Vallarino
began, having more than 150 participants in this ﬁrst
edition of Mines & Wines.
