DEAR FRIENDS
Este 2014 nos va dejando importantes satisfacciones y
logros obtenidos, en línea con nuestro compromiso de
promocionar y fortalecer las relaciones comerciales,
económicas y culturales entre todos los miembros
de nuestra asociación, que hoy día suman más de 120
integrantes.
Como Cámara de Comercio Canadá-Perú (CCCP)
hemos organizado actividades relevantes que han
contribuido a fortalecer la presencia de nuestra
institución, en todos los sectores donde estamos
involucrados, además de ser un aporte para el
desarrollo sostenible del Perú a través del comentario
y análisis de nuestros especialistas en cada rubro.
No puedo dejar de mencionar un acontecimiento
significativo: Ser por segundo año consecutivo el país
auspiciador del PDAC 2014, el evento minero más
importante y de mayor relevancia a nivel mundial, con
un rotundo éxito. De igual manera, la visita de nuestro
Presidente, Ollanta Humala al Primer Ministro de
Canadá, Stephen Harper, representó una ocasión
para ahondar en propuestas y negociaciones que
redundará en mayores y mejores oportunidades para
hacer negocios y alianzas conjuntas.
Estos logros no han sido más que el preámbulo
perfecto para celebrar por todo lo alto los 18 años de
trabajo y promoción en el 2015, teniendo como pilar
fundamental la búsqueda y fomento del comercio
entre Perú y Canadá.
En estas líneas no me queda más que agradecer
a todos por su trabajo, compromiso y esfuerzo ya que
gracias a ello atravesamos por un momento clave
para la relación entre ambos países.
Les deseo unas felices fiestas y un próspero año
nuevo, lleno de éxitos.
This year has left us with a significant sense
of satisfaction and goals achieved, in line with our
commitment to promoting and strengthening
commercial, economical and cultural ties among
all the members of our association, of whom
today there are more than 120.
In our capacity as the Canada-Peru Chamber
of Commerce (CPCC) we have organized relevant
activities, which have contributed to strengthening
the presence of our institution in all the sectors
we are involved in, as well as supporting Peru’s
sustainable development through the commentary
and analysis of our specialists in each area.
I cannot fail to mention one significant event:
having been the sponsor country of the 2014
PDAC, the world’s most important and relevant
mining event for a second consecutive year, with
complete success. Similarly, our President Ollanta
Humala’s visit to the Prime Minister of Canada,
Stephen Harper, represented an opportunity to
delve into proposals and negotiations, which will
generate bigger and better opportunities to forge
business and joint partnerships.
These achievements have provided the
perfect preamble to the great celebration of 18
years of work and promotion in 2015, which has
made the search for and promotion of trade
between Peru and Canada as its cornerstone.
It only remains for me to thank everyone for
their work, commitment and effort, since it is
that which has led us through a key moment in
the relationship between the two countries.
I wish you all very happy holidays and a
prosperous new year, full of success.

E
l 2014 ha sido, en varios aspectos, un año difícil. Para el
año entrante, algunos temas importantes como los cambios
en los términos de intercambio y la posibilidad de que EEUU
empiece a elevar la tasa de interés de referencia, tendrá
implicancias en el costo del dinero y el mercado cambiario.
Los volúmenes de producción minera deben incrementarse
en el 2015 gracias a varias operaciones nuevas y se entrará
en un ciclo importante de inversión en infraestructura. Otro
factor positivo es que, a pesar de la desaceleración del PBI
en el 2014, el consumo ha seguido creciendo algo más de
4%. Pese al contexto menos favorable, algunos sectores
de la agroindustria siguen con muy buena actividad y el
sector ﬁnanciero ha sido un neto propulsor dentro de la
desaceleración, con un crecimiento del crédito de dos dígitos.
Con todos estos factores, esperamos que el Perú consiga
volver a tasas de crecimiento cercanas al 5%, aunque ahora
la posibilidad de error, tanto al alza como a la baja, es más

grande de lo que ha sido en los últimos años.

014 has been a difﬁcult year in several ways. We have
some important issues in mind for the upcoming year, such
as shifts in terms of trade and the possibility that the USA
may increase the benchmark interest rate, which will have
consequences on the price of money and on the exchange
market. The volume of mining production should increase
in 2015 thanks to several new operations and we shall enter
an important cycle of investment in infrastructure. Another
positive factor is that, in spite of the deceleration in the GDP
in 2014, consumption has continued increasing somewhat
over 4%. Despite the less favourable context, some sectors
of agribusiness maintain a good level of activity and the
ﬁnancial sector has been an important driver within the
deceleration, seeing a two-digit credit increase.
Considering all these factors we expect Peru to return
to growth rates closer to 5%, even though the possibility of
error, both on the rise and on the decline, is greater than it
has been in the last few years.

D
urante los años 2013 y 2014 se han venido reduciendo
sostenidamente los costos de las operaciones mineras, los
que han sido trasladados a los proveedores, quienes debemos
innovar en productos y servicios para garantizar cada vez una
mayor eficacia, manteniendo altos estándares de calidad,
eficiencia y seguridad a menores precios. Durante el 2015
esta dinámica se va a mantener, siendo así la innovación y
el enfoque en el cliente elementos claves para entender y
satisfacer sus expectativas y seguir generando valor como
proveedor. Es en ese sentido que hemos venido trabajando
en Exsa para ofrecer soluciones innovadoras a la minería,
ad hoc para cada necesidad, como la tecnología Quantex,
recientemente lanzada al mercado y que como principales
atributos permite mejorar sustancialmente la eficiencia de
la voladura en la minería de tajo abierto y la consiguiente
reducción de costos operativos, así como menores precios de
adquisición, pudiendo representar un ahorro de hasta 20% en

el costo total de fragmentación de roca.

ining operation costs have steadily reduced during
2013 and 2014, these reductions have then been passed
over to the providers, who must create innovative products
and services in order to ensure ever greater effectiveness,
whilst maintaining high quality standards, efficiency and
security at lower prices. During 2015 we will continue with
this dynamic, using innovation and customer focus as key
tools for understanding and satisfying their expectations
and continuing to generate value as a provider. It is in
this sense that we have been working at Exsa, to offer
innovative solutions in mining, specially adapted to every
need, such as Quantex technology which has recently
been launched on the market. Its main feature is to enable
a significant improvement in the efficiency of blasting in
open-pit mining thus generating a substantial reduction
in operating costs, as well as lower acquisition prices,
representing a saving of up to 20% in the total cost of rock
disintegration.

s difícil sacarle la cuota de optimismo cuando
proyectamos el desarrollo de nuestros negocios de
cara a las perspectivas económicas del 2015, que
ciertamente sabemos que será un año complicado,
más aun cuando como líderes de organizaciones lo
que debemos de hacer es generar oportunidades e
impulsar y motivar al desarrollo de las mismas. En
nuestro caso, ESMETAL (Grupo Edyce) con un año
2014 de buenos resultados, sin duda nuestro enfoque
“externo” será el de asegurar la continuidad operativa
y productiva en el 2015 y no necesariamente en
nuestros sectores más tradicionales; esto sumado
a una cuota no menor de nuestro enfoque interno el
cual seguirá siendo el de la optimización de nuestros
procesos. No vislumbro un crecimiento para el 2015
pero sí una estabilidad en los negocios y en nuestros
resultados, lo cual dadas las moderadas perspectivas
de crecimiento en el Perú, será un reto alcanzable.

the development of our businesses considering
the economic forecast for 2015, which we
know for a fact will be a difﬁcult year, more so
when as leaders of organizations our task is
to create opportunities and then to promote
and motivate their development. In our case,
ESMETAL (Edyce Group) having had good results
in 2014, will undoubtedly focus “externally” on
ensuring operational and productive continuity
in 2015, not necessarily in our more traditional
sectors; as well as sustaining with no less
attention our internal focus, which will continue
to be the optimization of our processes. I do not
foresee growth for 2015 but I do expect stability
in our business and our results, which, given the
moderate perspectives of growth in Peru, will
be an achievable goal.

L
a convención PDAC es el evento de
inversión minera más grande del mundo y
se lleva a cabo en Toronto, Canadá, todos los
años en el mes de marzo desde hace 82 años.
Durante esta importante reunión se presentan, entre otras cosas, los nuevos proyectos
y exploraciones mineras en el mundo. Como
ya se está haciendo costumbre, la delegación
peruana que asiste al PDAC es una de las más
grandes de toda la convención. José Vizquerra, director ejecutivo de Bisa y presidente del
Comité Organizador del PDAC 2015, da detalles muy interesantes de esta reunión.
–¿Por qué es importante para el Perú
participar masivamente en el PDAC 2015?
–El Perú es un país minero por excelencia y no puede faltar en la convención de inversión minera más grande del mundo. Para
el Perú es tan importante el evento, que el
Gobierno Peruano ha declarado de interés
nacional la participación del Ministerio de
Energía y Minas en esta convención a las que
asisten alrededor de 25,000 personas de más
de 100 países todos los años. En el pabellón
peruano se busca promover una atractiva y
sólida imagen del Perú como receptor de inversiones mineras, entre otras, con empresas
que tengan como objetivo la excelencia ambiental y la inclusión de las comunidades en
los beneficios que genera.
–¿Cuál será la participación peruana
en la edición 2015?
–Al igual que en el 2014, el Perú será país
auspiciador del evento. La participación del
Perú en el evento consolida así su relevancia
global, poniendo en evidencia el liderazgo
y la proactividad ejercida por la Cámara de

mining investment event in the world and
it has taken place in Toronto, Canada, every
year during the month of March for the
last 82 years. New mining projects and explorations around the world are presented,
among other things, at this important
meeting. It is now becoming traditional for
the Peruvian PDAC delegation to be one of
the largest at the whole convention. Jose
Vizquerra, chief executive officer at Bisa
and president of the PDAC 2015 Organizing
Committee shares some very interesting
facts with us about this meeting.
–Why is it important for Peru to participate at the PDAC 2015 on such a large
scale?
–Peru is a mining country par excellence and it cannot miss the biggest mining
investment convention in the world. This
event, attended annually by 25,000 people
from over 100 countries, is so important for
Peru that the Peruvian government has
declared the attendance of the Ministry
of Energy and Mining a matter of national
interest. The Peruvian pavilion aims to
promote Peru as an attractive and sound
destination for mining and other investments, among companies that aim for environmental excellence and the inclusion
of local communities in the benefits they
generate.
–What will Peru’s participation at the
2015 edition be?
–Just like in 2014, Peru will sponsor the
event. Peru’s participation will thus consolidate its global relevance, highlighting the Í

empresa privada y del gobierno, para poner
en valor a la minería en el Perú. A pesar de la
turbulencia económica global y la percepción de conflictividad social, el Perú mantiene su fortaleza macroeconómica, atractivo
geológico y su interés de atraer inversiones
mineras. Calculamos que la delegación peruana en Toronto puede llegar a las 400 personas.
–¿Qué eventos organizará el Perú en
el PDAC 2015?
–El domingo 1 de marzo, se inaugurará el
stand peruano. El lunes 2 de marzo la delegación peruana participará en una de las sesiones de Responsabilidad Social Corporativa
(CSR Series), donde presentará su experiencia en la descentralización de la implementación del EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative). El martes 3 de marzo por la
mañana se llevará a cabo el “Peru Day”, en el
que tendremos exposiciones sobre el entorno económico y político del Peru, el potencial
minero y el atractivo del Perú como destino
de inversiones, así como la experiencia de
algunas empresas inversionistas en nuestro
país. Empresas mineras como Buenaventura,
Antamina, Barrick, Rio Tinto, Hudbay, Gold
Fields, entre muchas otras, estarán presentes en la Convención para difundir su experiencia en el país.
La participación del Perú como país
auspiciador en PDAC contribuirá sin duda a
incrementar el interés por invertir en nuevos
proyectos exploratorios de las grandes compañías mineras del mundo, lo que contribuirá
al crecimiento de la economía y la reducción
de la pobreza en el país.
Bajo el lema “Peru: a mining country
and much more… invest now!” (“Perú: un país
minero y mucho más… ¡invierte ahora!”), los
sectores público y privado han venido promoviendo la inversión en sectores distintos
al minero: infraestructura, energía, financiero, turismo, agroindustria, gastronomía,
historia, cultura y otros aspectos relevantes
de nuestro país. Esto con el fin de contribuir
a dinamizar la economía nacional a partir del

sector minero.

leadership and pro-activeness of the Peruvian-Canadian Chamber of Commerce,
together with private business and the
government, in adding value to the mining
activity in Peru. In spite of global economic
turbulence and perceptions of social conflict, Peru holds on to its macroeconomic
strengths, geological appeal and its interest in attracting mining investments. We
estimate the Peruvian delegation in Toronto may reach up to 400 people.
–What events will Peru organize at
the PDAC 2015?
–On Sunday March 1 the Peruvian stand
will be inaugurated. On Monday March 2
the Peruvian delegation will participate in
one of the Corporate Social Responsibility
sessions (CSR Series), where they are set to
present on their experience in decentralizing the implementation of EITI (Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative). On
Tuesday March 3 “Peru Day” will take place
in the morning, it will include presentations
on the economic and political background
of Peru, its mining potential and Peru’s appeal as an investment destination, as well
as on the experience of some investment
companies in our country. Mining companies such as Buenaventura, Antamina,
Barrick, Rio Tinto, Hudbay and Gold Fields,
among many others, will attend the Convention in order to share their experience in
the country.
Peru’s participation as a sponsor country in PDAC will surely contribute towards
increasing interest on investing in new exploration projects from large mining companies worldwide, which will contribute to
economic growth and poverty reduction in
the country.
The private and public sectors have
been promoting investment in other activities beyond mining such as infrastructure,
energy, financing, tourism, agribusiness,
gastronomy, history, culture and other
relevant aspects of our country under the
slogan: “Peru: a mining country and much
more… invest now!” The aim is to contribute towards making the national economy
more dynamic through the mining sector.

The fact that Peru and Canada have
several common areas of production
such as the extractive industries is
another key strength in their relations.
Canada offers hundreds of technical
and university programs in these areas
and this has been the foundation for the
three agreements entered into by the
Ministry of Energy and Mines of Peru
and the Caldo Consortium (a group of
nine leading research universities) for
building the institutional
capacity of professionals
in the electricity and
hydrocarbon subsectors.
Additionally, the Ministry
of Education of Peru has
chosen Canada as one of its
partners in the postgraduate
scholarships program
“Presidente de la Republica”
that will train 100 Peruvian
professionals annually in the
ﬁelds of Engineering, Biology,
Agriculture, Health Sciences
and Education, among others.
The Canadian Embassy
annually organises the
Canadian Education Fair. There were 24
institutes and schools that participated
in this year’s event, offering
short summer and winter
programs, as well as
international baccalaureate
programs, (English and
French) language institutes,
colleges with their broad
technical offer and a long
list of global excellence
universities.
More than 2000 people
attended the Fair and we
enjoyed great support from
nine sponsors including
the Canada-Peru Chamber
of Commerce, Air Canada,
BBVA, Pronabec, and the Visa
Application Centre, among
others. The fair we organize
gets bigger by the year and
we can see there is ever-greater public
interest in ﬁnding better options to

complete their studies abroad.

Robert Nicholson, ministro de Defensa de Canadá, llegó al
Perú para participar en la XI Conferencia de Ministros de
Defensa de las Américas. Se reunió con el Presidente Ollanta
Humala y Pedro Cateriano, Ministro de Defensa del Perú.
Robert Nicholson, the Canadian Minister of Defence, arrived
in Peru to participate in the 11th. Conference of Defence
Ministers of the Americas. He met with President Ollanta
Humala and with Pedro Cateriano, Minister of Defence of Peru.
E
n una clara demostración de las excelentes
relaciones bilaterales por las que atraviesan Perú
y Canadá, Robert Nicholson, Ministro de Defensa
canadiense, llegó nuestro país para participar en la XI
Conferencia de Ministros de Defensa de las Américas,
que se llevó a cabo en Arequipa. Durante su visita, el
Ministro Nicholson se reunió con el Presidente Ollanta
Humala y su homólogo peruano, Pedro Cateriano.
Durante esta reunión, ambos ministros revisaron la
agenda bilateral y coincidieron en que el Perú y Canadá
mantienen una relación estratégica en diversos campos,
entre los que destacan los de seguridad y defensa. El
ministro Nicholson aseguró que le gustaría que su país
incremente la cooperación con el Perú en materia de
entrenamiento militar.
Asistieron a la reunión bilateral el viceministro de
Recursos para la Defensa, Jakke Valakivi, y el comandante
general de la Marina, almirante Carlos Tejada; y por
Canadá, su embajadora en nuestro país, Patricia Fortier y
funcionarios del ministerio de Defensa canadiense.
Hace unos días el Perú y Canadá ﬁrmaron un
convenio de gobierno a gobierno para la compra de cinco
helicópteros multimisión para la Marina de Guerra del
Perú, que ayudarán a fortalecer su capacidad operativa y
garantizarán la seguridad del mar peruano.
La XI Conferencia de Ministros de Defensa de las
Américas fue inaugurada por el presidente Ollanta Humala
en Arequipa, con la presencia de 34 países, además de
España y Portugal como observadores, evento que apunta a
armonizar temas de seguridad y defensa en el hemisferio. En
la conferencia se abordaron otros temas relacionados con
defensa como la lucha contra el narcotráﬁco y el terrorismo,
cooperación a nivel de sanidad militar, búsqueda y rescate,

así como protección del medio ambiente, entre otros.

earing witness to the excellent bilateral relations
between Peru and Canada, Robert Nicholson, Canadian
Minister of Defence, arrived in our country to participate in
the 11th. Conference of Defence Ministers of the Americas,
held in Arequipa. During his visit minister Nicholson met
with President Ollanta Humala and with his Peruvian
counterpart, Pedro Cateriano.
The ministers went over the bilateral agenda in this
meeting and were both of the opinion that Peru and Canada
share a strategic relationship in various areas, particularly
on security and defence issues. Minister Nicholson declared
that he would like to see his country increase cooperation
with Peru in the area of military training.
Also present at the bilateral meeting were Jakke
Valakivi, Deputy Minister of Resources for Defence and
Admiral Carlos Tejada, Commander-in-Chief of the Navy;
Canada was represented by its Ambassador in Peru,
Patricia Fortier, and officials from the Canadian Ministry of
Defence.
A few days ago, Peru and Canada signed a governmentto-government agreement under which the Peruvian Navy
will buy five multi-mission helicopters that will strengthen
its operational capacity and will contribute to ensuring the
safety of the Peruvian seas.
The 11th. Conference of Defence Ministers of the
Americas was opened by President Ollanta Humala in
Arequipa, with 34 countries in attendance, alongside
Spain and Portugal, present in an observational capacity.
This event aims at harmonising security and defence
matters in the hemisphere. During the conference other
defence-related issues were included in the agenda, such
as the struggle against drug trafficking and terrorism, cooperation on military medical services, search and rescue,

and environmental protection, among others.

Canadá participó masivamente en la última edición de la
feria minera Expomina. En el evento, que se realizó en el
Centro de Exposiciones Jockey hasta el 12 de setiembre,
el pabellón de Canadá reunió a 25 importantes empresas
proveedoras mineras. La embajadora de Canadá en
el Perú, Patricia Fortier, participó en la exposición
“Inversiones canadienses en el Perú”.
Canada had a substantial delegation at the last mining
trade fair Expomina. The event took place at the Jockey
Exhibition Center until September 12, and Canada’s stand
featured 25 important mining suppliers. Hon. Patricia

la noche del martes 28 de octubre, Susana Baca presentó su libro “Lo Africano en el Perú: El Amargo Camino de
la Caña Dulce”. Esta entrega de Susana Baca congregó a
diversas personalidades del mundo empresarial, diplomático, artístico y autoridades gubernamentales. El libro fue
presentado por Jaime Valenzuela, presidente de la empresa petrolera canadiense Pacific Rubiales Energy, compañía que acompañó a la distinguida canta autora en este
proyecto, cuyo aporte permite la preservación de la cultura afroperuana en el país. Beatriz Merino, Cheche Campos
y Max Hernández comentaron el libro y disco compacto.
Susana Baca presented her book “Lo Africano en el Peru:
El Amargo Camino de la Caña Dulce” (Africans in Peru: The
Bitter Path of Sweet Cane”) on Tuesday October 28 at an
event organized in MATE, in Barranco. Her presentation
convened an array of celebrities from the entrepreneurial,
diplomatic, artistic and governmental spheres. The book
was introduced by Jaime Valenzuela who is CEO of the
Canadian oil company Pacific Rubiales Energy, which sponsored the distinguished singer and songwriter’s endeavour
to preserve Afro-Peruvian culture in this country. Beatriz
Merino, Cheche Campos and Max Hernandez gave some
comments on the book and compact disc.
