To keep the boys in food and clothing he had to beg constantly. On one occasion, Clement went begging to a local pub. He asked for a donation. One of the patrons scornfully spit beer into Clements face. Wiping off the beer, he responded, “That was for me. Now what do you have for my boys?” The men in the bar were so astounded by the Christ-like response that they gave Clement more than 100 silver coins. St. Clement performed no miracles, and received no visions or ecstasies. He even had his share of faults; he had a quick German temper, and a tendency to be rude and rough. But if you could spend a few hours in his presence, you would find him to be a man of strong faith, a man of great calm and peace, and a man who could work tirelessly for souls. He was a man who accepted the will of God as it came to him, and did all the good that was in his power to do. He was devoted only to glorifying God and leading others to serve him. Clement was born on December 26, 1751 in Czechoslovakia and died on March 15, 1820. He was canonized a saint of the Church on May 20, 1909 . March 17: St. Patrick When Patrick was travelling around Ireland, he came across two brothers whose father had died. Instead of being sad about their father’s death, they were quarrelling over which one of them should now own their father’s farm and possessions. At first they shouted at each other, and next they started to fight with their fists. St. Patrick called out to them to stop fighting – but they were too angry to hear him. One of the brothers picked up a large rock, and St. Patrick feared that he might kill the other – and so he called out a prayer. Instantly both brothers were turned into stone. They could still hear and see, but they couldn’t move. St. Patrick explained to them that it was wrong for brothers to fight – and when he turned them back into men, they were so amazed that they settled their differences and were friends forever more. St. Patrick was born in Wales in the year 387. When Patrick was 16 years old, he was walking along the beach when some pirates seized him. They took him to Ireland and sold him as a slave where he worked in the fields. One day, he heard God telling him to escape, and he ran down to the sea where he found a ship waiting to take him home. When he was grown up, he heard a voice calling on him to return to Ireland and to tell the people there about Christianity – which is what he did. March 19: St. Joseph A girl had prayed daily for 10 years to St. Joseph for a good husband, with no sign that her request would ever be granted. She began to lose confidence. One Sunday morning she returned from Mass and knelt before her statue of St. Joseph imploring him to grant her request. But after 10 minutes, in a fit of irritation and despair, she pulled the statue from the table and threw it through the window. A young man passing by the house was struck on the head with it, getting a severe cut. He knocked at the door of the house for help and perhaps an explanation. The client of St. Joseph apologized, offering to attend the injury. They became good friends. Six months later they were happily married. The gospels give very little information about this chosen one, the earthly guardian of Our Lady and the foster father of our Lord. He silently and faithfully went about doing his duties as well as the will of God. His steadfastness as a guardian and husband is the basis for his patronage of fathers of families. St. Joseph to whom the saying, “action speaks louder than words,” can be applied, is the patron of engineers, manual workers, celibates and those seeking good wives and husbands. He is invoked by those in doubt and those who desire a holy death. St. Clement, St. Patrick and St. Joseph – Pray for us! God Bless Us All Fr. Tizio Email: [email protected] Pastor’s Pun: Why shouldn’t you work on fixing your Irish accent? If it ain’t brogue, don’t fix it. Next week is Palm Sunday. Besides the distribution of palms, we will have the proclamation of the Passion of Jesus. Both of these are an integral part of what makes next week such a special and solemn entrance into Holy Week. It also tends to extend Mass a little longer than usual as well. It is also a Sunday that many fallen away Catholics and non-practicing Catholics like to return to “get their palms”. Many folks call these A & P Catholics (ashes and palms). So it will be very likely that our Masses will be a little bit more crowded than usual. So, a little patience and kindness, both in Church and in the parking lot, will be a wonderful example of mercy and witness! St. Mary’s Parish Community Pillar Parish Library "D a r k n e s s in th e Marketplace-The Christian at Prayer in the World," by Thomas H. Green, SJ, resolves the tension between a person's desire for a fuller prayer life and a commitment to an active life in the world. Based on Scripture and his own experience in prayer and spiritual direction, he skillfully leads his readers to the discovery of unity between prayer and a busy life. His message of hope is this: our busy lives need not be seen as obstacles to prayer, but rather as occasions in which we can learn to pray with a greater sense of God's love for us. Available in the Morality section of the SJN Parish Library. Annapolis, Maryland Ranger Rosary This letter was received from France this week. “Dear brother, sister, I am a Frenchman “Catholique.” I would like to receive one chaplet military please. For your association six US dollars included. God Bless you!” Many people love to make rosaries. There are groups from across the country as well as individuals who string these beads. Most mail them to St. Mary’s because after thirteen years we have an extensive list of chaplains and the number of rosaries needed – some up to a thousand a month. They can request as many as they like. We inspect and box them for shipping and put them by the altar to be blessed at the 12:10 Wednesday Mass. Finally they are taken to the post office. Thank you to all the volunteers. The large amount of rosaries made allows us to send them to the VA hospitals and nursing homes also. The Lord wants His Mother Mary known and loved. The powerful prayers from these sincere hearts can do just that. Join us each Wednesday at SJN 9-12. 410-990-4100, Ext. 4714; [email protected]; www.rangerrosary.org. This past week, our students celebrated Foreign Language Week. Each day, a student read the Morning Prayer aloud over the intercom in a different language. A contest was held, on Thursday and Friday, challenging the students to identify the language spoken for the prayer that day. Throughout the day on Wednesday, students enrolled in upper level French and Spanish courses were required to use their target language socially. Saint biographies, representing the French, Latin and Spanish languages which were written by the students, were displayed throughout the school for all to read. In addition, cultural trivia questions on index cards were posted in the hallways. Students who could answer the trivia question were asked to bring that card to the corresponding language teacher to see if they could successfully earn a small prize. We also offered a variety of international foods on the cafeteria menu for the week. It was a wonderful celebration of foreign languages and cultures for all of us. Our Nothing But Treble group earned third place at the International Championship of High School A Capella Mid-Atlantic Quarterfinal held at Wootton High School on February 13. San Clemente no realizó Milagros, y no tuvo visiones o éxtasis. Dios Nos Bendiga a Todos Pe.
