Dear Parishioners,
Ash Wednesday and the Season of Lent
Doing good, not sinning, following Christ, is simple, right? All you have
to do is love God with your whole heart, soul, and mind. Oh, and love your
neighbor as yourself. See? Simple! Unfortunately, it’s not easy. I know that.
You know that. Anyone who says it is easy is just plain lying (or maybe
fooling themselves); of course it’s difficult to live so that our actions always
follow from our love of God. There are so many things in life that we just
plain want more than to live in love of God – at least for the moment. And
the enemy is smart; he knows how to trick us down that road. He never tempts us with something that we would
immediately reject. He starts small – like the tiniest grain of sand. If you’re sensitive to it, even a single grain of
sand can be pretty uncomfortable. But let’s be honest, we are not all that sensitive – to sand or sin.
Look at it like this. Imagine you are walking along, and you pick up a little pebble that looks kinda cool. It’s
shiny, a pretty color, sparkly – it gets your attention. You drop that pebble in your pocket and continue on your
way; for this illustration, that little pebble is a sin. It doesn’t weigh you down that much, does it? But imagine
you see another one on the road, and you like it, too. You already have one, so you get it a friend. Now you
have two. You keep walking along and picking up pebbles that you like. Eventually they are going to start to
get heavy, right? You start looking for pebbles, and your walk turns into a hunt for even better stones. As you
go, some of the stones you find get larger; some are the size of your thumb, some your fist. Your collection is
growing. You tell a little lie. You cheat. You steal. You deceive. The stones keep getting bigger.
Going shopping or sleeping in late is more fun than going to Mass. It’s just this one time. The next week, it’s
just one more time, but you’ll definitely go next week. God understands. We have an agreement. He’s still the
center of my life, and I love him more than anything, but he loves me and wants me to be happy, the excuses
begin and they soon get more elaborate. The stones get bigger. They’re starting to weigh you down, and you
know you don’t like it, but you can’t stop. You need the next exciting stone for your collection. They aren’t
worth anything, but they’re just so awesome looking!
Eventually, we will come to a time when we fully push God to the side, when we decide we no longer need
him in our day-to-day life. We will do things we never thought we’d do – and we will add a big boulder to our
collection to carry around.
In comes the priest to hear your confession. You unload. Jesus Christ, through that priest, takes all those
stones you thought were so important, and you see them for the rubble and debris they are.
But what about the boulder? I can’t admit that to the priest. What would he think of me? I will just confess
all the pebbles and the smaller stones. That bigger one, though, I can’t say that out loud! No one knows.
God does. That is the very rock he wants to take from you, but you have to be willing to hand it over to the
priest. As long as you cling to that boulder, you cling to sin, you hold it close to your heart; ever try to give
someone a hug while holding a boulder in your arms? It gets in the way of loving God with everything you are.
I’m pleading with you. Trust God; trust the priest he has put in front of you to hear your confession. When you
finish your confession, the priest will raise his hand and give you absolution. At that moment, the stones are
gone. Christ has taken them on himself. We are finally free to love God again with our whole heart, our whole
soul, and our whole mind. And we do our best to avoid starting another collection. This Lent, once and for all,
drop that boulder! In this Year of Mercy, throw yourself on the mercy of God and receive His forgiveness.
God Bless Us All

In "Until the Trumpet
Sounds-Seeking Holiness
Now," author Zachary
Grant, O.F.M. writes that
our Christian destiny is to become
saints-and it is within all of our reach,
even today. Through his careful
reflections, introspections, examples
of others path to holiness, as well as
his own, Grant outlines a plan which
we all can follow to achieve holiness.
We are all capable of change, even
those who seem the least bit saintly.

Ranger Rosary
A Servant of God, Father Vincent
Capodanno, MM was a priest,
missionary and Chaplain who sought
the healing and comfort of
the
wounded and dying on the field of
battle. He was one of the many
dedicated men and women entrusted
with the spiritual well-being of our
country's Armed Forces. He was
loved by the troops he served and
was a great witness to the power of
courage and his faith, even in the
face of death.
He died on a
battlefield in Vietnam administering
the sacraments. Look up his website
www.vincentcapodanno.org. Ask for
his prayers.
The Mother of God is the Ladder
of Heaven. God came down by this
ladder that men might, by Mary,
climb up Him in heaven. Consider
praying a rosary every day during
lent.
Remember our military
especially those in danger and the
wounded. We are able to send 1000
a week to the VA hospitals and
nursing homes thanks to your
support. The rosary is spreading
around the world through our troops!

Today we begin our celebration
Our Catholic School’s W eek
celebration was very successful. Our
students attended Mass to kick off
our week of celebration, thanking
God for the opportunities they have
because they attend a Catholic
School. Several Redemptorists
priests, Fr. Andy and Father Matthew
Allman, along with members of the
School Sisters of Notre Dame, Sr.
Mary Noel Albers, Sister Elise
Saydah, and Sr. Phyllis McNally,
joined us for this Mass as special
guests, allowing us to recognize the
founders of St. Mary’s. On Tuesday,
the students spent time working on
various service projects for the
homeless, elderly, and those in need
throughout our community.
W ednesday, we showed our
appreciation to the students. They
dressed out of uniform and the PFA
provided them with a Chick-fil-a
lunch. Thursday was faculty & staff
appreciation day and the PFA once
again provided lunch as their treat.
W e concluded the week in
appreciation of our parents. Students
came extra early on Friday to hand
out coffee to the parents as they
arrived to drop off their child for
school. Students also spent time
writing letters to the parents which
were mailed to them as a thank you
for all they do in support of St.
Mary’s.

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Responding Prayerfully and Joyfully to
Pope Francis' Laudato Si'
Each month, the St. Mary's Environmental
Stewardship Committee (SMESC) is offering one
practical, substantive suggestion for caring for our
common home. During Advent, it was to have an
energy audit done on your home. Last month, we
proposed a switch to wind power, through Interfaith
Power and Light, and Groundswell (http://gwipl.org/gogreen/support-clean-power/). This month's tip is to
consider using solar power.
There are multiple approaches to using solar energy
for electricity:
1. Buying or leasing solar panels from one of the
many commercial suppliers with competitive
prices in the Annapolis area;
2. Joining a cooperative to purchase panels in bulk
and engage your own installer;
3. Joining a cooperative for people whose houses
don't have appropriate sun angles or who are
renters (an option currently being explored in
Annapolis).
Additional information is available on the St. Mary’s
website.
The next SMESC meeting is Wednesday, March
16 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the second floor conference
room of Notre Dame Hall (behind the Elementary and
High Schools). All are welcome. Contact Paul O'Hearn
or ([email protected]) or Sue Wentworth
([email protected]) for more information.

Estimados Parroquianos,
No te carga mucho peso. A cierto punto vas a comenzar a
Sólo voy a confesar
Mientras tu te aferres a esa roca enorme,
Dios Nos Bendiga a Todos
Pe. Tizio
