Dear Parishioners,
Once upon a time lay a beautiful garden. And there in the cool
of the day was the Master of the garden, who went for a walk.
Of all the dwellers of the garden, the most beautiful and beloved was a gracious Bamboo. Year after year Bamboo grew
yet more beautiful and he was conscious of his Master’s love
and watchful delight. Yet he was modest and gentle. Often
when Wind came to revel in the garden, Bamboo would throw
aside his dignity and dance merrily, tossing and swaying and
leaping and bowing in joyous abandon. He would lead the
great dance of the garden which most delighted his Master’s
heart.
One day the Master drew near to contemplate his beloved Bamboo. With eyes of curious expectancy, Bamboo
bowed his great head to the ground in loving greeting.
The Master spoke: “Bamboo, Bamboo, I would use you.”
Bamboo said, “Master, I am ready, use me as you want!”
“Bamboo,” the Master’s voice was grave, “I would be obliged to take you and cut you down.”
A trembling of horror shook Bamboo. “Cut … me … down? Me, whom You, Master, have made beautiful in
Your garden? To cut me down? Ah, not that! Not that! Use me for Your joy, O Master, but cut me not down!”
“Beloved Bamboo,” the Master’s voice grew graver still, “if I don’t cut you down, I cannot use you.”
The garden grew still. Wind held his breath. Bamboo slowly bent his proud head. There came a whisper.
Bamboo replied, “Master, if You cannot use me unless You cut me down, then do Your will and cut!”
“Bamboo, beloved Bamboo, I would cut your leaves and branches from you also.”
“Master, Master, spare me! Cut me down and lay my beauty in the dust, but would You take from me my leaves
and branches also?”
“Bamboo, alas! If I do not cut them away, I cannot use you.” The Sun hid his face. A listening butterfly glided
fearfully away. Bamboo shivered in terrible expectancy, whispering low, “Master, cut away.”
“Bamboo, Bamboo, I would divide you in two and cut out your heart, for if I do not cut so, I cannot use you.”
“Master, Master, then cut and divide.”
So did the Master of the garden took Bamboo and cut him down and hacked off his branches and stripped off his
leaves and divided him in two and cut out his heart.
Lifting him gently, he carried him to where there was a spring of fresh, sparkling water in the midst of Master’s
dry fields. Putting down one end of Bamboo in the spring, and the other into the water channel in his field, the
Master laid down gently his beloved Bamboo.
The spring sang “welcome”! The clear sparkling water raced joyously down the channel of Bamboo’s torn body
into the waiting fields.
Then the rice was planted and the days went by. The shoots grew. The harvest came. In that day was Bamboo,
once so glorious in his stately beauty, yet now more glorious in his brokenness and humility.
For in his beauty he was life abundant.
But in his brokenness he became a channel of abundant life to his Master’s world!
“He said unto them, ‘Whoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me. For
whoever will save his life shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life for My sake and the gospel’s, the same shall
save it.” (Mark 8:34,35).

"What Jesus Saw
From the Cross," by
A. G. Sertillanges,
will intensify your
love of Jesus by
burning the events
of His Passion into your memory
and imagination. Written by a priest
who lived in Jerusalem and spent
many a day walking and praying in
the streets where Jesus walked and
prayed, this famous devotional
classic gives you vivid details not
included in the Gospels, and it brings
the Gospel events to life for you in
unexpected ways. The gripping
narrative will engage you in an
unforgettable encounter with Jesus'
tender love for you as he freely gave
His life for you on the Cross.

In this Jubilee Year of Mercy,
Pope Francis asks us to perform
works of mercy. The rosary makers
do both the spiritual and corporal
works that bring many blessings on
this world. We put this powerful
prayer tool in the hands of our
military and Mary hears and answers
their prayers. She brings Jesus to
us and His Father and the Holy
Spirit! We grow in holiness with the
Blessed Trinity at our side. How
fortunate we are! We trust them with
our own needs and those urgent
requests for the whole world. Pray
the rosary daily especially during
Lent.
Join the rosary makers on

St. Mary’s Prison Ministry
Did you knowE that members
of St. Mary’s Parish are involved in
two programs conducted at the
Anne Arundel County Detention
Center on Jennifer Road in
Annapolis? One is the St. Mary’s
Catholic Prison Ministry which brings
the Word of God and administers
the Blessed Host to inmates on
Saturday afternoons. The other is
the Detention Center General
Education Development (GED)
Program which assists inmates in
achieving a High School Diploma by
tutoring them in science,
mathematics, social studies,
reading, and writing.
If you would like to help inmates
with the desire to turn their lives
around, you can do so by
volunteering for either or both of
these programs. Please contact
Richard Buss at (410) 263-5204 if
you are interested in helping,
For the Lord hears the poor, and does not
spurn those in bondage. (Psalm 69:34)
Physician - Assisted Suicide
Legislation has been introduced
in the Maryland General Assembly
that would allow doctors to legally
prescribe a lethal dose of drugs at
the request of a patient who has
been deemed mentally competent
and who has received a terminal
diagnosis. The legislation, referred
to by its proponents as “death with
dignity” is unnecessary, flawed, and
lacks safeguards. Please contact
your legislators as soon as possible
and ask them to oppose the
Physician-Assisted Suicide Bill. For
more details please go to Maryland

Faith Formation
The Maryland March for Life will
take place on Monday, March 7th.
Participants will gather here at St.
Mary’s Church. Please consider
joining us for this special event.
We recently hosted a career day
for the junior and senior students
which proved to be a wonderful new
event for all involved. We had many
alumni, a few parents, some former
and current faculty members, as well
as one priest who spent time
presenting to our students about their
chosen career. We are so grateful to
so many who helped us make this a
success.
This past week, our students
attended another Kairos retreat
where they spent time exploring their
faith. We are grateful that our
students have opportunities such as
this which allow them the freedom to
embrace and reflect on their spiritual
relationship with God.
Although the winter weather has
played havoc with the second
semester schedule, our students and
teachers are settling in and working
hard to keep their focus while looking
forward to spring.
On Sunday, March 13th, please

Fourth Sunday of Lent
Responding Prayerfully and Joyfully to Pope
Francis' Laudato Si'
Each month, the St. Mary's Environmental
Stewardship Committee (SMESC) is offering one
practical, substantive suggestion for caring for our
common home.
♦ Advent: have an energy audit done on your home
♦ January: consider switching to wind power
♦ February: consider using solar power
For March, buy local, seasonal, and, if possible,
organically grown food. It’s healthier for you and for the
earth; and, take just over 1 minute to look at Pope
Francis’
beautiful
plea
to
“Care
for
Creation” (thepopevideo.org).
The next SMESC meeting is Wednesday, March
16 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in the second floor conference
room of Notre Dame Hall (behind the Elementary and
High Schools). All are welcome. Contact Paul O'Hearn or
([email protected]) or Sue Wentworth
([email protected]) for more information.

Estimados parroquianos,
“Cor…tar….me…?” A mi, Maestro, a quien has hecho embellecer tu jardín? Para
cortarme?
susurro.
ramas?
“Él dijo, “El que me siga a Mí, debe negarse a sí mismo, tomar su cruz y seguirme. El que quiera salvar su vida, la perderá;
Dios Nos Bendiga a Todos
