Dear Parishioners,
I would like to share with you an excerpt from Father Joseph Gallagher’s
autobiography which shows a rather humorous side of First Penance.
Child Penitent: “Blast me, Father, for I have sins. This is my last confession…since a month ago. I said “Damn it” four times – three times before
and once just now. I ate meat on Friday.”
Priest: “Anything else?”
Child: “Oh, yes: potatoes and gravy and corn. I am sorry for these sins and
all the sins of my fast life.”
Priest: “All right. Now make a good act of contrition.”
Child: “A Good Act of Contrition – O my God I am hardly sorry for having
defended Thee…and I test all my sins because I dread the laws of heaven…
I firmly dissolve to help Thy grace to do the penance and to end my life.
Amen.”
Last Saturday, January 16th and just this weekend, St. Mary’s celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation
for the first time for over 150 of our parish second graders. Our congratulations and prayers as they continue
to prepare for their First Holy Communion in May! Special thanks to our proud parents and grandparents and
guardians for their help, support and example in guiding our children to this Sacrament. Also my thanks to
our parish catechists and school teachers, to my brother Redemptorists who took the time to hear the confessions, and to Deacon Moore and our Faith Formation team for pulling it all together.
As we celebrate this Year of Mercy and as the season of Lent is near upon with Ash Wednesday, I share
with you some reflections on the Sacrament of Reconciliation from Pope Francis.
Pope Francis said that confessing our sins isn't a “mechanical” procedure like getting a stained removed
but rather a joyful embrace from God, who forgives everything from a heart that's repentant. There is no sin
which God won’t pardon. He forgives everything…If you go to confession repentant, he will forgive everything. God always forgives every sin without exception whenever someone asks for pardon. God always forgives us. He never tires of this. It’s we who get tired of asking for forgiveness, but HE does not tire of pardoning us. Although there are many who might say “I don’t go to confession because I have committed so
many really bad sins, so many that I can’t be pardoned,” the pontiff stressed that “No, this is not true. God
forgives everything. Often times God doesn’t even let us finish speaking, the Pope said, noting that as soon
as we begin to ask for pardon, “He lets you feel that joy of forgiveness before you have even finished confessing. God rejoices whenever a person asks for forgiveness, and erases our sins from his memory. God
does this, because what is important for him is that we encounter him, because going to confession is not a
judgment, but rather a meeting point with God. “Confessions often seem like a procedure, a formality. Everything is mechanical! No! Where’s the meeting in this?” the Pope asked, noting that confession is
instead an encounter with the Lord who “pardons you, hugs you and rejoices. To go to confession “is not like
going to the dry cleaners to get a stain removed,” the Pope said. “No! It’s about going to meet with our Father who pardons us, who forgives us and who rejoices.”
God Bless Us All

Ranger Rosary
Jubilee Pilgrimage to Italy
The Ranger Rosary volunteers
and the Veterans of Saint Mary’s
were treated to a delicious luncheon
this week after our weekly meeting
and the 12:10 Mass. It was given by
the Taylor Funeral Home in the hall
at SJN. Since we are now sending
thousands of rosaries to the VA
facilities both groups have much in
common.
Veterans gave part of their lives
to protect our country. Many are still
recovering from their injuries. The
rosary makers work for their spiritual
needs. We can put into their hands
the comfort, protection and healing
of our Mother Mary. Through the
powerful prayers of the rosary Mary
asks her Son Jesus to answer all
their needs. We both care for the
wellbeing of our country’s brave
young men and women. We should
remember them in our own prayers.
Please consider joining us on
Weds 9-12 at SJN. We make and
send a lot of rosaries!!! Attend the
12:10 Mass and rosary afterwards.

home the connection between the

1000 HOLIDAY “THANK YOUs”
The St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Parish
would like to express sincere gratitude for the very
generous donations of the parish for the Thanksgiving
and Christmas 2015 Holiday Share Project.
Your contributions and wonderful gifts for the children
were so impressive!
That sharing together with tremendous time and
effort given from church members, high school
students (St. Mary’s, Archbishop Spalding, South River
to name a few) allowed us to deliver complete meals
with turkeys to over 500 area families in need for both
Thanksgiving and Christmas. In addition, we delivered
more than 850 children gifts from the “giving tree”.
That is a thousand thanks!
Happy 2016 from St. Vincent de Paul Society.
Catholic Lobby Night
Please join Maryland’s bishops and hundreds of
fellow Catholics for the Maryland Catholic conference’s
32nd annual Lobby Night.
The date has been moved from Presidents’ Day to
Shrove Tuesday (Feb. 9) from 3-8pm to allow for a
reception in the Miller Office Building for the
participants, bishops and all members of the General
Assembly.
Lobby Night is one of the best attended advocacy
events in Annapolis. Gathering everyone in one place
will also demonstrate the great turnout we have every
year when parishioners have the opportunity to speak
in person with elected officials about issues such as
Physician-Assisted Suicide and the Maryland
Education Credit.
Appointments will not be made this year. Legislators
will be alerted that there will be visitors during the 5
o’clock hour and they will be seeing constituents during
a dinner reception from 6 to 7:30.
The event is free but registration is required. Visit
www.mdcathcon.org/lobbynight or call the Maryland
Catholic Conference at 410-269-1155/301-261-1979 to
register or for more information.

Estimados Parroquianos,
He dicho “maldito” cuatro veces - tres veces antes y una
ahorita. Comí carne el Viernes”
Padre: Alguna otra cosa?
Dios no perdone.
No!
Ir a

Departament of Homeland Security ha divulgado.
